It was just an ordinary Tuesday when I decided to prune the old oak tree in the communal courtyard. The tree cast too much shade over my neighbour Martha’s window; she was an elderly lady who was always complaining about the cold – and who wouldn’t, given the temperature that persists all year round… I picked up the pruning shears with a single thought in mind: ‘mean no harm’. There was no malice in my hands, nor any cruel premeditation; just a genuine desire to give her a bit of sunlight.

The hidden edge of good intentions

I cut the thickest branch blocking the window. The crack of the dry wood was satisfying, until I heard the dull thud on the lawn. As I drew nearer, my heart sank. Hidden amongst the dense summer foliage lay a fragile blackbird’s nest. Three bluish eggshells lay shattered on the damp earth, spilling a promise of life that would never take flight.

I stood there, paralysed, clutching the tool as if it were a lethal weapon. I’d only meant to help. I hadn’t intended to cause pain, but the universe makes no distinction between calculated cruelty and well-meaning clumsiness. Sometimes we walk through the world believing that our lack of malice absolves us of the harm we cause others. Yet innocence, too, has a sharp edge.

That afternoon, Martha’s living room was bathed in warm light, but our garden was plunged into a deathly silence, bereft of the morning song. I learnt, in the most bitter way, that our actions are always like stones thrown into a pond. We have no idea who will be drowned by the ripples we unwittingly create. Sometimes, we simply hurt others without meaning to.
