The last salt trench

Sitting on the cold metal bench in the public hospital, Don Ismael clutched an envelope of X-rays—which no longer revealed anything new—with his white knuckles. Outside, the world was falling apart amid headlines of famine, broken promises and figures in the red. A guard, fed up with the constant wailing of others’ complaints, snapped with sharp disdain: ‘If you don’t like it, cry some more.’ Ismael, far from taking offence, accepted the challenge with deathly calm. It was not a defeat; it was the last bastion of humanity.

To weep more is not to give in; it is to acknowledge that the body still has enough water to wash away the grime of helplessness. In this age of absolute scarcity, where bread is lacking but arrogance abounds, tears are the only free resource that the system has been unable to privatise or regulate with official stamps. Ismael let the first tear trace the crease in his parched cheek, a deep furrow like a dry riverbed that suddenly regains its course beneath the storm.

He wept for the house that the mud had swept away last winter, for the medicine that never turned up at the chemist’s, and for that son who crossed the border without looking back. Crying more became a visceral ritual in the face of the calamity breathing down our necks. Faced with the hardship that bends our spines, a man becomes a giant when he allows himself to break down. The guard walked away, uncomfortable in the face of the dignity of that salty tide. Ismael remained there, flooding the corridor with the only truth we have left.
