The only guaranteed eternity

‘Death is not the end’ is often heard at funerals as a source of spiritual comfort, but outside places of worship, the phrase takes on an immense and resounding significance. There is no mysticism in the ceasing of the heartbeat, but rather a masterful transfer of chemical substances. We are, in essence, a temporary loan from geology and biology. When we breathe our last, we do not vanish into an imaginary ether; we simply return, with interest, what nature gave us so that we might walk and feel upon it.

True immortality does not lie in cities of gold or abysses of sulphur—concepts that spring from humanity’s deep-seated fear of insignificance. Reality is harsher and, at the same time, infinitely more poetic: we are energy in constant flux. As the chemist Antoine Lavoisier so aptly put it: ‘Matter is neither created nor destroyed; it is merely transformed’. Under this scientific premise, a corpse is not useless waste, but a bountiful feast. Our matter decomposes to nourish roots, to become the nitrogen in a centuries-old oak or the carbon in a butterfly’s wing.

Accepting death as the logical conclusion of the cycle is the purest act of humility there is. From dust we come and to dust we return, not as a divine punishment, but as an unbreakable and necessary law of physics. When we die, we cease to be isolated individuals and are reintegrated into the global ecosystem that allowed us to exist. The end is not absolute silence, but the beginning of a new role in the great theatre of thermodynamics.
