The ‘remorse’ was left at customs
The freezing air of Toronto didn’t just chill my cheeks when I first arrived; it also seemed to cool that inner judge I’d brought tightly packed in my suitcase from the Caribbean (Venezuela). In our Latin culture, the gaze of others is the mirror in which we dress ourselves. I grew up with ‘you look a bit plumper’ as a familiar greeting and ‘no regrets’ as a necessary pardon following the sin of gluttony. For us, remorse is that shadow that always dances with pleasure, an apology we offer in advance before taking a bite.

Standing in front of a shop window on Queen Street, a sign stopped me in my tracks: ‘Guilt-free maple treats’. I stood there staring at the phrase (mulling over my fledgling English). In this corner of the English-speaking world, ‘No guilt’ has become a banner of consumerism, almost a civil right. Whilst my “without remorse” sounds like a mischievous act requiring confession, their “guilt-free” comes across as a technical liberation, a licence granted by the system to enjoy oneself without the burden of dietary morality (imposed stereotypes). There, surrounded by strangers who weren’t scanning my waistline to gauge my success, I grasped the subtle linguistic boundary (my first language lesson on a reality TV show).

I ordered the richest dessert I could find. At the very first bite, the sugar reminded me that guilt isn’t a language, but a burden. Up north, that weight melts away under the promise of personal well-being. For the first time, I wasn’t ‘breaking my diet’; I was, quite simply, inhabiting my body (I felt free). I decided then that my ‘no regrets’ would cease to be an excuse in front of the mirror and become my new personal frontier. I walked towards Lake Ontario feeling strangely light, discovering that freedom, sometimes, tastes of honey and offers no apologies.
