All The Unsent Letters: Everything She Will Do Tomorrow

"Tomorrow;
I'll smoke a cigarette and write a poem
in front of our neighbor who says that female smokers are sluts.

Tomorrow;
I'll tattoo my shoulder,
I'll give my arm to the first man who will love
me as I am
like a snake spinning around his waist

Tomorrow;
I will kill a man and steal his kidney and give it as a present to my father
on his birthday

tomorrow;
I will leave the country I love
for a country that respects me as a normal human being

tomorrow;
I will trample the people in my head
I will never be afraid

tomorrow;
The gods will not die in my country, you
will live like the gods of the West

tomorrow;
I won't hide my words in the bathrooms
God will ask me to hear my poems

tomorrow;
I will pay for my novel and buy the
corn that I love

tomorrow;
The morning will come for the first time

tomorrow;
It would be a dream!"

All things sound pretty good, apart from this one:

I will kill a man and steal his kidney and give it as a present to my father
on his birthday

What the flying kidneys!

Love this poem though, especic. the first stanza.

That line was supposed to represent the lack of awareness of freedom along with highlighting the anger of an oppressed person. Oppressed people don't really have the full grasp of Freedom x Responsibility/Limitation as they have never been exposed to that.

At least that was the attempt. Thank you for reading and commenting.

Hahaha yeah, a realistic quest for freedom after years of oppression is imperfect. You don't simply go from 1 thing to its opposite with full understanding, there's still the residue of your past experience. That was the point of that line. If you look closer you'd find other lines to be problematic as well.

Thank you for reading.

It wasn't until I went to the comments that I realized how deep this poem truly is. Before I understood it, the defiance in it came through clear as a bell, but the motivation was uncertain. I didn't know what she hoped to accomplish with all these things she was talking about doing tomorrow. It wasn't until I realized the struggle for freedom that each of these things held a more powerful message. Even the more shocking stanzas like killing a man for his kidney allude to a reality in which the poet has the freedom to commit great evil or great good. There are lines in there which allude to freedom of thought, freedom of speech, freedom and ownership of the physical body and sexuality... things that those of us in the West take for granted and even abuse.

Thank you for sharing this thought-provoking piece! You've given me something to reflect on today! !PIZZA

Kickass poem m8. Really, so many great lines in it and I can see the character you're portraying perfectly which is a sign of great writing.
