COMPREHENSION: THE HAWK AND THE OSTRICH
The Hawk and the Ostrich were very good friends. They lived very close to each other. Both of them had large farms where they worked every day. Sometimes they ate together. They often shared things together as neighbours. But both of them had no children. One day, they went to medicine man in another village to ask for help. The medicine man told them to bring money for a special kind of medicine.
The Hawk had money but the Ostrich did not. The money that the Hawk had just enough for her alone. So, both of them decided to work harder on their farms so that they could get enough money for the Ostrich. After working hard for one week, they were able to get enough money for the Ostrich to also take to the medicine man’s house. Both of them then went together to see the man.
The medicine man gave the medicine to both of them. Both of them used the medicine but the medicine did not work for the Ostrich. The Hawk later had six children and was very happy. The Ostrich was very sad. She stayed in her house. She did not want to talk to anybody. One day, the Hawk went to the Ostrich’s house. She spoke kindly to her. She told her that she could allow two of her children to stay with the Ostrich so that she could not feel lonely. The Ostrich thanked the Hawk. Both of them continued to go to their farms together with Hawk’s six children. The Hawk’s children were so kind to the Ostrich that many people did not know that they were not the Ostrich’s children.
This story teaches us that no matter what is happening to our neighbour and friends, we should be kind to one another.
