Saludos naturales a esta comunidad #AmazingNature que es una de mis favoritas, porque a través de cada reto semanal, me lleva a explorar mi mundo natural,les cuento que para este reto, estuve con mis sentidos muy abiertos para poder participar, quería algo que me sorprendiera y que ustedes también quedarán complacidos.

Me fui a la búsqueda en mi pequeño paraíso y nada, pensé que ya no habría oportunidad, pero que les cuento, tuve mi encuentro sorprendente.

En la mañana me correspondió ir a una cita médica, ya les conté que vivo en una zona rural y me tocó caminar un trecho, por donde las orillas hay mucha vegetación y un recolector de aguas fluviales.

Mi encuentro fue en la calle semi asfaltada, con muy poco tránsito de vehículos, me encontré con un Caracol Criollo como lo llamamos en la población, tenía casi 10 años que no tenía la oportunidad de observar uno de cerca, fue una alegría enorme, pensé que ya estaban extintos en esta zona.

Natural greetings to this community #AmazingNature which is one of my favorites, because through each weekly challenge, it takes me to explore my natural world, I tell you that for this challenge, I was with my senses wide open to participate, I wanted something that would surprise me and that you will also be pleased.

I went in search of my little paradise and nothing, I thought there would be no chance, but what can I tell you, I had my surprising encounter.

In the morning I had to go to a medical appointment, I already told you that I live in a rural area and I had to walk a stretch, where the banks there is a lot of vegetation and a river water collector.

My encounter was in the semi paved street, with very little traffic of vehicles, I found a **Caracol Criollo** as we call it in the population, I had almost 10 years that I had not had the opportunity to observe one up close, it was a great joy, I thought they were already extinct in this area.

Hace algún tiempo hubo una invasión de caracoles africanos y no sólo acabaron con muchos cultivos, jardines y casi en su totalidad con nuestro caracol criollo, en todos lados podías verlos en grandes grupos, sobre todo en las noches, en lugares con cualquier vegetación.

Aquí en Venezuela este caracol criollo es conocido también como Guácara y a sido inspiración para componer cantos en su honor y colocarle ese nombre a localidades pequeñas dentro del país.

Some time ago there was an invasion of African snails and not only did they wipe out many crops, gardens and almost entirely our creole snail, everywhere you could see them in large groups, especially at night, in places with any vegetation.

Here in Venezuela this creole snail is also known as Guácara and has been an inspiration to compose songs in its honor and to name small towns in the country after it.

Ahora llegó el momento de describir está extraordinaria especie:

Esta especie M. oblongus, es perteneciente a la familia Megalobulimidae, es también un molusco terrestre, tropical, endémica de América del Sur, alcanza cerca de 100mm de alto y 60 mm de ancho,

En Venezuela es conocida como Guácara, mientras que en otros países se le conoce como Caracol de Boca Rosada y Caracol Gigante de Sur América. (Leme, 1975; Parodiz, 1982; Campos y Coelho, 2003). La guácara es apreciada como alimento en Sur América y su baba es comercializada por supuestas bondades sobre la piel. Además, estos caracoles son usados para curar el asma (Alves y Dias, 2010; Barbosa y Alves, 2010).

Algo interesante sobre los caracoles es que cuando se retraen en su concha, segregan un tipo especial de mucosidad para cubrir la entrada de su caparazón con una estructura llamada opérculo. Esto lo hacen cuando estivan o hibernan (Barnes 1969, Castillejo 2013), presentan una sensibilidad táctil muy elevada y su capacidad para orientarse hacia el alimento es por el olfato (Castillejo 2013).

Este impresionante caracol lo podemos encontrar en ambientes húmedos y con abundante vegetación, preferiblemente en bosques siempre verdes; hallándose además en jardines, hojas en descomposición y cerca de viviendas, donde puede verse subida en árboles y taludes (Bequaert, 1948; Olazarri, 1987; Sistema Venezolano de Información sobre Diversidad Biológica, 2012b).

Now it is time to describe this extraordinary species:

This species M. oblongus, is belonging to the family Megalobulimidae, it is also a terrestrial mollusk, tropical, endemic to South America, it reaches about 100mm high and 60 mm wide, 

In Venezuela it is known as Guácara, while in other countries it is known as Pink Mouth Snail and Giant South American Snail (Leme, 1975; Parodiz, 1982; Campos and Coelho, 2003). The guácara is appreciated as food in South America and its slime is marketed for its supposed benefits on the skin. In addition, these snails are used to cure asthma (Alves and Dias, 2010; Barbosa and Alves, 2010).

Something interesting about snails is that when they retract into their shell, they secrete a special type of mucus to cover the entrance of their shell with a structure called operculum. They do this when they summer or hibernate (Barnes 1969, Castillejo 2013), they have a very high tactile sensitivity and their ability to orient themselves towards food is by smell (Castillejo 2013).

This impressive snail can be found in humid environments with abundant vegetation, preferably in evergreen forests; it is also found in gardens, decaying leaves and near homes, where it can be seen climbing trees and slopes (Bequaert, 1948; Olazarri, 1987; Sistema Venezolano de Información sobre Diversidad Biológica, 2012b).
