Agave salmiana subsp. Crassispina

Agave salmiana subsp. tehuacanensis

Saludos Naturales.🍃

Let's learn more about this plant, so important that it was considered a goddess:

Agave salmiana is one of the magueys that were deified by some Mesoamerican cultures. In the case of the Mexica culture (Aztecs) it represented the Goddess Mayahuel, the goddess of the 400 chichis (breasts in Nahuatl), who fed her 400 rabbits (centzontotochtin), the gods of pulque intoxication.

As a curious fact, the teeth on the margins of the stalks of this species have the shape of breasts, which confirmed to the Mexica, its sacred origin.

Scientific name

Gentry recognizes four infraspecific categories (Garcia-Mend, 2018) which are:
Agave salmiana var. salmiana

Agave salmiana var. ferox

Agave salmiana subsp. crassispina

Agave salmiana subsp. tehuacanensis

The species name was given in honor of the German taxonomist Joseph Maria Franz Anton Hubert Ignaz [prince of] Salm-Reifferscheidt-Dyck (1773-1861) (González et al. 2009).

Common names

Agave salmiana is known by several names according to variety, subspecies and community where it grows:

Maguey manso

Green maguey

Maguey cimarrón

Maguey mezcalero

Maguey pulquero

Maguey mano ancha

Maguey de quiote (González et,al. 2009)

Yavi cui (green maguey in Mixteco)

"Exmo ́tstsaajts" (maguey wide base in Mixe)

Uses

It is mostly known as maguey pulquero in the Mexican highlands. From it is obtained the mead that later will be fermented to turn it into pulque. In the states of Guanajuato, San Luis Potosí and Durango it is used to make mezcal. In some communities of the central valleys of Oaxaca sometimes A. salmiana subsp. tehuacanencis is used for the production of mezcal.

It is also used as a living fence to delimit land and orchards. The inflorescences are occasionally used as fodder and the dried stalk or quiote for construction (roofs, walls and fences); the leaves are often used to make roofs.(Garcia-Mend 2018).

Characteristics

Agave salmiana is characterized by massive rosettes with succulent leaves with sigmoidal apex. A horny margin with large teeth; inflorescences with fleshy bracts and stout flowers up to 11 cm long. (Garcia-Mend,2018)

Geographic distribution.

Cultivated or in Quercus-Pinus forest edges, tropical deciduous forest and xerophytic scrub, on diverse soils. Elevations of 1500-2600 m. (García-Mend, 2018).

Here in Venezuela this type of plants grow in semi-arid places, thus achieving its best growth, this species that I show you, grows naturally on a hill near where I live, the locals do not know how it got to that place.

It is very interesting to see how this species originating from Mexico, we can find it as a common plant in this place of my country, it would be interesting to do an investigation of how they got there.

I hope that like me, you find this information interesting, about this plant that I have as part of my treasures in my yard.

Greetings Naturals.🍃

We live coastal sub-tropical yet I planted and Agave around 25 years ago in a pot under roof where it captures morning sun in a hot spot. Currently completing it's first and I believe only flowering season.

What a pleasure to learn more from your content in natural geographic region.

They do attract small birds and bees, I believe bats arrive during the night to pollinate as well.
