Summer school programme - architecture school Day 1
The sixth edition of summer school at Nitte institute of Architecture was held from 11-07-2022 to 16-07-2022. It was my first ever summer school programme in architecture school. Every year our school has different eminent resource persons coming in to conduct these week long workshops for the students studying in different semesters. It's very interesting, because the students get to learn a new form of art or something else out of the architecture realm. It's a wonderful experience because you learn so much in just those five days.
For this year our topic for the summer school was design workshop. We had three artists coming ,
Prof. Rajesh Sagara
AHMEDABAD
Mr. Shreyas Karle
GOA / MUMBAI
MS. Hemali Bhuta
GOA / MUMBAI
I was a part of the last workshop. The Hemali Bhuta workshop. This was the brief of the workshop.
Sessions around
- Work that creates
many opportunities
for one to experience
the absolute
unnecessary and
totally domestic. - Why make new work or what to do
with old works? - Can we think of work always in the
state of becoming, with no closure? - What do you do
when you are not
making work? what
does one do when
waiting becomes a
form of practice or
can waiting be a form of practice?
Although this was the brief of our workshop for this year , the second the third workshop were combined. So we worked with Mr.Shreyas Karle and Ms.Hemali Bhuta for these five days. This post is going to be a long one to read , so might as well consider getting a coffee or some snacks to munch on while you read on.
I would've combined all the five days together , but since we are doing a lot on each day I want to talk about day one in this post. Since we had a little excursion on day two of the summer school workshop , I want to write a whole article about it cause it deserves to elaborated about. Anyways without any further ado , let's get on with Day one.
To start off with day one , we were super stoked to see and know what was in store for us. We all assembled in our college auditorium because the artists that were conducting the workshop wanted to screen a movie.
I will be linking the short documentary they showed us. It's available on YouTube
It's an hour long documentary. You may watch when you have the time , ofcourse after you read my article 😆.
This documentary is about the broom
Jharu khatha in Hindi language simply means broom stories. In this documentary, he documents the life of the broomstick vendors. The making of a broomstick wasn't shown in detail but they showed us different materials they use to make brooms. It's about the cultural relevance of a broom. It's not merely a cleaning tool but a symbol of some communities. About how a tool like a broom is neglected so much by us is a source of livelihood for others. It's about how different communities in India live by making money through making of brooms.
This documentary definitely gave us different perspective on a broom. To look at it as not just a cleaning tool but also more than that.
In the second half of the day, we went to our workshop. Once all of us gathered there, we were asked to clean our workspace. We keep what we need and what we could possibly reuse. We cleaned it so that it's ready for us to work in. A clean workspace equals clean mind to work. That was what we did for the first day and after which we did some reading on cleaning and the philosophy behind it. That was it for the first day. The second day was a field trip. Stay tuned to see great photos and how fun the trip was!
Thank you so much for reading this far. I'm grateful to all of you and this platform that let's me express myself. See you all in my next post 🫶🤍
