Summer school programme - architecture school Day 1
The Day 2 of my summer school was supposed to be a little excursion. On day 1 we were only told about the trip but we weren't told the location we would travel to. Which made us all the more excited and curious about it.

On day 2 we were asked to reach our college by 9:00 AM. After which we took our college bus around 9:30 and left for our destination ( we still didn't know ), we didn't know till we reached the actual place to know where we were. We travelled for about 1 hour 30 minutes and on reaching the destination we were a bit disappointed because we didn't get to see anything fascinating. We then had to take an auto rickshaw up till 1.5 kilometres and then for the next 1.5 kilometres we walked. And oh boy, I can't exaggerate how much fun we had on the way. Here's a photo below of everyone walking together.

On reaching the place , we were so delighted to be in between areca nut tree plantations. The lovely streams , the honey bee hives. All of this was just a happy vibe to me. We had a site visit to a place called Adya Nadka. We went there to meet the man who dug the earth to make tunnels in order to have water irrigation for his land.

A photograph of Mr. Mahalinga Naik with all his trophies and awards

Around 45 to 50 years back Mr.Mahalinga Naik bought a land from his landowner who he used to work for. The land that he bought was a barren land. Because of it a barren land Mahalinga was concerned about the irrigation for his land. He then was a struck with an idea. To create earth tunnels in order to have water flowing to his land. During the day he would work in the fields as a farmer and during the nights he would dig and dig to nothingness. He failed about five times while he tried to create these tunnels. But his perseverance and zeal to work for his land always kept him going. He also said he did this for his kids and his wife. He wanted a better future for them. Believe it or not , this man has dug so much that he made a tunnel of 72 meter length. I was beyond shocked when I heard this. You know how determined he was in his life. Inspite of failing multiple times in the beginning he kept going. We sat around him and spoke to him for about thirty minutes straight. It surely a delight for all of us. It was so inspiring for all of us. One advice he gave us was that every person must have a field of his own. He must grow something so that he gets to have a taste of what he planted. To even think about it , to dig until late night with pitch darkness this man managed to make tunnels. Below are photos of the tunnel that he dug.

It was definitely an experience for all of us. I felt like a child , alive and happy. I was playing around with everyone there. Splashing water , trying to catch guppy fishes. Below are some beautiful pictures of little well with lotuses growing in it with guppy fishes in it. I also took photos of my friends playing with them.

Oh, this work needs a lot of energy and struggle to dig the hard stones like that. It is inspirational to read about him. Thank you for sharing.
