¿Cuántos de ustedes le tienen miedo al odontólogo? ¿Sabían que es algo más común de lo que se imaginan?

Y todo empieza porque muchas veces la primera experiencia odontológica de las personas es de forma traumática.

Bien sea por un dolor insoportable de dientes (una caries muy grande), una caída donde se perdió algún diente, o un odontólogo que no se tomó el tiempo y la dedicación necesaria para hacer de esa experiencia lo más llevadera posible.

Por si no lo saben la especialidad dentro de odontología para atender niños se llama ODONTOPEDIATRÍA, en mi opinión particular es una especialidad de mucha paciencia, amor, dedicación y es una de las más importantes, ya que es el odontopediatra el encargado de tener las herramientas necesarias para hacer de esa primera experiencia lo más cómoda posible para el niño o niña.

Sin embargo, aún sin tener la especialidad de odontopediatría, todos los demás odontólogos recibimos capacitación para atender niños de forma general y en mi caso, aunque mi especialidad es mayormente dirigida a adulto cuento con una pequeña cantidad de pacienticos infantes que se han ganado mi cariño especial, ya que me roban el corazón y afortunadamente he logrado conseguir la manera de atenderlos y que su experiencia sea la más llevadera, tanto para ellos como para mí.

Hoy les hablaré del paciente más chiquitín que me ha tocado atender, se trata de Fabián.

Un bebé de apenas 2 añitos de vida, supertierno, tímido y consentido, que llegó a mi consulta porque presentaba caries en sus dos dientes principales (Incisivos centrales superiores) y su mamá lo llevó para ver como lo podíamos solucionar.

Esta consulta se volvió muy particular porque en vista de que es un niño tan pequeño que acude por primera vez al odontólogo y lo que había que hacerle para solucionar su problema, posiblemente le podía doler un poquito, yo utilice una técnica que aprendí con una odontopediatra muy querida.

Esta técnica se llama "técnica de sillón humano" la cual consiste en que la persona que le ofrece mayor confianza al infante (mamá, papá, hermano, hermana, abuela, etc.) se siente sobre el sillón Odontológico y el niño o niña en cuestión se siente sobre esta persona, de esta forma la persona que lo tiene en sus brazos nos ayudará a darle confianza y de ser necesario a sostenerlo suavemente y con mucho amor su carita y bracitos para que no se mueva.

En el caso de Fabián, para nuestro sillón humano usamos a su hermanita, la cual es su protectora principal y según su mamá su mejor amiga, así que fue la candidata perfecta para aplicar la técnica.

También para no asustarlo ese día no me coloque la bata, solo lo atendí con mi uniforme quirúrgico, ya que considere que colocarme bata, más guantes, más tapaboca iba a ser una imagen bastante temerosa para su recuerdo.

Otra cosa que adicione a la consulta fue colocarle con mi teléfono un video en youtube de sus muñequitos favoritos, por supuesto, bajo la sugerencia de su mamá.

¡¡Afortunadamente, toda la metodología utilizada funcionó y logré que Fabián y su familia se sintieran super seguros con el procedimiento y el resultado fue el más exitoso!!

Todos quedamos muy contentos. Atender niños no es tarea fácil, pero si lo hacemos con amor y conocimiento al respecto podemos lograr resultados maravillosos.

Either due to unbearable tooth pain (a very large cavity), a fall where a tooth was lost, or a dentist who did not take the time and dedication necessary to make that experience as bearable as possible.

In case you do not know, the specialty within dentistry to care for children is called PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY, in my particular opinion it is a specialty of a lot of patience, love, dedication and it is one of the most important, since it is the pediatric dentist who is in charge of having the tools necessary to make this first experience as comfortable as possible for the child.

However, even without having the specialty of pediatric dentistry, all other dentists receive training to care for children in general and in my case, although my specialty is mostly aimed at adults, I have a small number of infant patients who have earned my affection special, since they steal my heart and fortunately I have managed to find a way to serve them and make their experience the most bearable, both for them and for me.

Today I will tell you about the smallest patient that I have had to attend to, it is Fabián.

A baby barely 2 years old, super tender, shy and spoiled, who came to my office because he had cavities in his two main teeth (upper central incisors) and his mother took him to see how we could solve it.

This query became very particular because in view of the fact that he is such a small child who goes to the dentist for the first time and what had to be done to solve his problem, it could possibly hurt a little, I used a technique that I learned with a pediatric dentist very dear.

This technique is called the 'human chair technique' which consists of the person who offers the infant the most confidence (mom, dad, brother, sister, grandmother, etc.) sits on the dental chair and the boy or girl in question is felt about this person, in this way the person who has him in his arms will help us to give him confidence and if necessary to gently and lovingly hold his little face and arms so that he does not move.

In the case of Fabián, for our human chair we used his little sister, who is his main protector and according to his mother, his best friend, so she was the perfect candidate to apply the technique.

Also, in order not to scare him that day, I did not put on my gown, I only treated him with my surgical uniform, since I considered that putting on a gown, more gloves, and a mask would be a very fearful image for his memory.

Another thing that I added to the consultation was to place a video on YouTube of his favorite cartoons with my phone, of course, at the suggestion of his mother.

Fortunately, all the methodology used worked and I made Fabián and his family feel super safe with the procedure and the result was the most successful !!

We are all very happy. Taking care of children is not an easy task, but if we do it with love and knowledge about it, we can achieve wonderful results.
