Three reasons to read Victorian-style novels

Hoy quiero compartirles algunos beneficios de leer novelas ambientadas en la era victoriana, un estilo literario que últimamente me tiene completamente encantada (de hecho, justo ahora estoy leyendo una).
Hello dear Hive community, I hope you are all doing well. As always, it's a pleasure to come here and talk to you about what we love so much: books. Today I want to share with you some of the benefits of reading novels set in the Victorian era, a literary style that I have recently become completely enchanted with (in fact, I'm reading one right now).
A veces creemos que las novelas antiguas son lentas o difíciles, pero en realidad esconden mundos fascinantes, llenos de elegancia, crítica social y emociones universales. Aquí les dejo tres razones por las que vale la pena darles una oportunidad.
Sometimes we think old novels are slow or difficult, but they actually hide fascinating worlds, full of elegance, social criticism, and universal emotions. Here are three reasons why they are worth giving a chance.
3. Retratan la sociedad con profundidad y elegancia/They portray society with depth and elegance.
Las novelas victorianas nos muestran con detalle cómo funcionaban las clases sociales de la época, las normas morales y los conflictos de género que marcaban la vida de las personas. A través de ellas podemos comprender cómo eran las dinámicas entre la aristocracia, la burguesía y la clase trabajadora, pero también reconocer que muchas de esas tensiones siguen existiendo hoy, solo que con otros matices.Leer este tipo de historias es adentrarse en una época donde la apariencia lo era todo, y donde el amor, la ambición o el orgullo podían cambiar el destino de alguien por completo.
Victorian novels show us in detail how the social classes of the time functioned, the moral norms and gender conflicts that marked people's lives. Through them, we can understand the dynamics between the aristocracy, the bourgeoisie, and the working class, but also recognize that many of these tensions still exist today, albeit with different nuances. Reading these types of stories is like stepping into a time when appearances were everything, and where love, ambition, or pride could completely change someone's destiny.
2. Exploran las emociones humanas desde otra perspectiva/They explore human emotions from a different perspective.
Aunque los seres humanos sentimos lo mismo desde hace siglos —amor, tristeza, celos, esperanza—, no siempre los expresamos por las mismas razones ni en las mismas circunstancias.
En la era victoriana, la rigidez social y las diferencias de clase condicionaban los sentimientos y las relaciones. Por eso, leer sobre esas emociones en un contexto tan distinto al nuestro nos permite reflexionar sobre cómo el entorno moldea lo que sentimos y cómo lo demostramos. Es como vernos reflejados en un espejo antiguo: distinto, pero familiar.
Although humans have felt the same emotions for centuries—love, sadness, jealousy, hope—we don't always express them for the same reasons or in the same circumstances.
In the Victorian era, social rigidity and class differences conditioned feelings and relationships. Therefore, reading about these emotions in a context so different from our own allows us to reflect on how our environment shapes what we feel and how we show it. It is like seeing ourselves reflected in an antique mirror: different, but familiar.
1. La estética/Aesthetics
Si han visto Los Bridgerton, saben exactamente de qué hablo.
Las novelas de época nos sumergen en un mundo sofisticado y visualmente hermoso: vestidos elegantes, bailes de salón, cartas románticas y cortejos discretos bajo la mirada atenta de la sociedad. Es casi imposible no dejarse llevar por esa atmósfera que parece sacada de un sueño.
If you've seen Bridgerton, you know exactly what I'm talking about.
Period novels immerse us in a sophisticated and visually beautiful world: elegant dresses, ballroom dancing, romantic letters, and discreet courtship under the watchful eye of society. It's almost impossible not to get carried away by this atmosphere that seems straight out of a dream.
Además, hay algo muy mágico en poder transportarse a un pasado que realmente existió, pero que hoy nos parece tan lejano como un cuento. Y bueno, debo admitir que mi clase social no es precisamente aristocrática, así que me gusta imaginar que vivo, aunque sea por unas páginas, entre bailes y mansiones victorianas.
What's more, there's something truly magical about being transported to a past that really existed, but which today seems as distant as a fairy tale. And well, I must admit that my social class isn't exactly aristocratic, so I like to imagine that I live, even if only for a few pages, among balls and Victorian mansions.
