Yardfishing: Rushing Christmas with the Weeding of an Old Farm

(Edited)

I want to appreciate every homesteader to have made it in life to see the week at which Christmas 2022 will be celebrated. I also want to appreciate the effort of the community in making this wedding contest a reality. I believe that most of us already know that Christmas is just a few days from now and I think it’s an opportunity for me to weed an old farm and get ready for next year's planting season.

Without further delay, I will be discussing with you how I tried my possible best to get my farm weeded with the use of some farm tools and domestic animals. How it all started after I farmed on the farm during the last yam season which normally occurs in the rainy season. After I harvested the yam and some minor maize planted from the little farm. Weeks ago, a friend of mine told me that it will be better for me to start weeding some of my harvested farms now it’s harmattan season. He encouraged me that by the time I get my farmland weeded this harmattan season that it will never grow again till the next year's farm season.

After hearing from my friend about weeding some of the farms I have harvested crops from. It wasn’t quite long and I noticed that they were a wedding contest here in the community. The contest gave me more courage to start doing something good for my farm. But the issue here is that Christmas is already close and how am I going to meet up with the weeding since I have so much farmland?

IMG_20221221_102733.jpg

In order to rush at least two farms at once since Christmas is already around the corner, I have to divide two means to weed. First is using a domestic animal known as a cow and second is weeding one of the farms where I previously harvested yam myself.

I called the men who seem to be rearing cows to help me take their cows to one of my farms. When they did, I visited the farm to see whether the cows are really weeding the grasses from the farm. It was actually impressive to see that at least three cows were already doing their job by weeding one of the farms. I believe that most people don’t really know that cow is one of the fastest methods to get your farm weeded especially when you don’t want to spend money or waste energy. This is because cows can consume a good portion of grass without getting tired. The method of using cows to weed your farm can be best done during the dry or harmattan season.

From my second farm where I previously harvested yam. When I got to the farm with some farming tools known as cutlass and weeding hoe, I noticed that the farm was really bushy. But it was really the best time for me to get to work by weeding and clearing the farm.

IMG_20221221_102008.jpg

I have to start by using the cutlass to cut the grasses gradually. Before I proceed with the explanation, I must confess that the cutlass which I was using was not quite impressive for me on the farm. This is because the cutlass original head is no longer available and I have to use some fabrics to tie the head up and keep managing the removal of the weeds.

IMG_20221221_102208.jpg

When I started weeding the farm, I have to use my right hand to hold the cutlass and my left hand to hold the grass I was weeding from the farm. This is to make the clearing of the weeds faster and more convenient to avoid injuries. When placing your left hand during weeding, you must be very careful with the cutlass.

By the time I get somehow tired using the cutlass; I will apply the use of a weeding hoe. One thing about clearing weeds with a hoe is that they make the farm neater than the cutlass.

To be honestly speaking, when I was weeding the farm where I previously harvested yam months ago. I was opportune to see some yams which I forgot during the harvesting. When I dig them out from the ground, I was happy with the yams I saw. This is because I can comfortably reserve the yams for next year's yam planting.

After I weeded the farm, I have to use my hand to park the weeds on one side. This is because the grasses will surely die and be used for manure on the same farm.

The cows works really hard to help you weeding. You've done a great job preparing the land and as well as writting this story up.
