Architectural styles and building designs that are built very beautifully and are iconic are always fun to discuss and share with friends in the Architecture+design community. In my city today the weather is very sunny which makes me want to visit a place that has a very beautiful and classic building.

Picsart_23-03-18_15-13-29-600.jpg

The place I visited is called the Lhokseumawe City Museum which is located on Jalan Teuku Hamzah Bendanara, Kuta Blang, Banda Sakti District, Lhokseumawe City, Aceh. What makes this museum so iconic and much loved by the people of Lhokseumawe and its surroundings is because of its classic and unique building design.

This building is called "Rumoeh Aceh" which means the traditional Acehnese house in ancient times, this house was built in the form of a stilt house made using teak wood with a building height of about 4 meters from the ground. Unlike other stilt house buildings, there are several characteristics of buildings that were built specifically for this Acehnese traditional house.

Picsart_23-03-18_15-34-56-640.jpg

The clearest and most distinctive sign for us to know that this is a traditional Aceh house building is in the number of pillars underneath. The Aceh traditional house itself is built on 44 sturdy pillars that stand underneath, the design of the poles is very simple, even though they are only round and long, these poles are made of very sturdy teak wood.

From under the house we can see many pillars that stand firmly, the floor of the house that is right above my head is also made very neatly, from below we can see how sturdy the framework is made to accommodate the house on stilts above it.

This Aceh Traditional House was also built with two entrances, namely the main entrance on the side and also the back door which was made at the back of the house. To go up to the stage house is also made stairs.

The stairs are also not that many, namely around 6 steps so that it is easily accessed by young people and parents. On the door, it is also carved with typical ancient Acehnese carvings which are very iconic. This carving looks very beautiful flower shape.

On the outside of the house all the walls are also carved with various classic motifs, from the front of the house we can see there are 3 windows, two on the right and left and one right in the middle. At the bottom of the window is carved like a ribbon that surrounds the re
houses with lines of large squares in the form of a cross.

Likewise, on the wall next to the window, everything is carved in a very nice shape, like the shape of a window. At the top of the window, a carving is made with holes which function for wind flow so that it can enter the house so that the room in the house is not stuffy.

At the very top, another carving is also made in the form of a very beautiful flower which makes the front of this traditional Aceh house never tire of being looked at. If on the left side there are stairs and an entrance on the right side of the house, a kind of box-shaped room is also made which is used as a kitchen area inside the house.

In this part of the kitchen is also made complete with paintings that are all over the outside walls. The roof of this stilt house is made using thatched roofs typical of ancient Aceh, the reason the roof of this house is made with thatched leaves is so that it can be cool inside, because if the roof is made using stainless steel it will be very hot inside.

Satisfied with seeing the entire exterior of this Aceh house, now I want to show you what is in the courtyard of this Aceh house that was used by the ancient Acehnese, on the front there is a small hall made using teak wood and roofed with thatch leaves too.

Picsart_23-03-18_15-37-37-090.jpg

The function of this hall is for community meetings in all villages or it can also be used for the Koran hall and night patrol hall. What is unique about this hall is that the upper part is also carved with a very beautiful Acehnese carving, this carving is made in the shape of a Jeumpa flower which is a typical flower of Aceh.

Picsart_23-03-18_15-20-15-400.jpg

At the back of the house there is a large "Tamboe" drum made, the skin of this drum is made using genuine cowhide, the function of this drum is to be used to signal when the call to prayer arrives and also to inform when it is time to break the fast.

This drum is made very simple, there are only 4 pillars on all sides to support the roof of thatch leaves. Now we move to the right side, here I see that there is a "Jeungki" that is used for crushing rice that you want to make into flour.

Picsart_23-03-18_15-25-25-100.jpg

This flour maker is designed in the shape of a cannon which is given a frying pan at the front end, the way it works is like a seesaw. In front of Jeungki there is also a "Kroeng Pade" which is used as a place to store rice harvested from the fields.

Picsart_23-03-18_15-26-44-600.jpg

This rice storage area is made in a large round shape with walls made of knitted bamboo skin. Those are all the parts in the traditional Aceh house and it is exactly the same as the old Aceh house.

Picsart_23-03-18_15-12-07-010.jpg

At the front of this Aceh house there is a very large and very well maintained and clean courtyard, from here we can clearly see the 6 domes of the very beautiful Islamic Center Mosque. Then on the concrete wall in the courtyard of the Acehnese traditional house, several beautiful murals are also made that reflect the characteristics and lifestyle of the Acehnese in ancient times.

Picsart_23-03-18_15-42-15-000.jpg

The one drawn in this first mural is an Acehnese girl doing the saman dance which is a typical Acehnese dance, this dance is still very popular to this day.

Picsart_23-03-18_15-43-45-450.jpg

Then I also saw a mural depicting the Debus dance, this dance means that the ancient Acehnese were very strong and never gave up in the war against the invaders.

Picsart_23-03-18_15-41-05-700.jpg

Then there is also a mural made with typical Acehnese clothing for men and women with two cannons underneath, this means that the soldiers who joined the Aceh army in ancient times were strong men and women.

Picsart_23-03-18_15-39-17-010.jpg

And finally there is a mural that was made specifically to show various typical Acehnese musical instruments, Acehnese dances to the overall shape of the museum itself. What I like the most when I'm here is the clean and green location which makes everyone who comes here feel very comfortable and happy.

It is the first museum that I have seen that is built in wood, its teak foundation gives a lot of security because this type of wood is known to be very strong and resistant, it makes you curious to want to explore the interior of this museum, thanks for sharing it 😊
