Do not waste your unused RC! Use it to claim free Steem accounts!

avatar

With the release of the Steem blockchain HF20 a few months ago, we have seen significant changes in the account creation process. As before the hardfork, you can ask steemit.com to create one for you and wait for at 7 days to get your credentials. You can also spend your money using the various "pay for your account" services out there.

But anyone with enough Resource Credits (RC) can claim discounted account creation credits which they can use to create Steem accounts for free!

There was no GUI for doing this so @reazuliqbal created on web page that you should run locally for safety reasons as it uses your active key.

Although it's a very useful tool, I found it a little tedious to daily check my RC, to claim a new account and then repeat this process if I still had enough RC available. And, more often than I wanted, I forgot to do it for several days, so my RC quota was fully reloaded to 100% and somehow I was wasting RC that I could have used in a smarter way.

Enter the automation

To make my life cooler, I have decided to create an app that will automate this process.

The app is open source and you can download the code from github

How to use?

  • Clone the repository locally
  • Make sure you have the latest LTS or greater version of Node JS installed
  • Go inside the cloned folder and type npm install
  • Rename .env.example to .env and add your Steem username and active WIF
  • To start the app, type npm start

By default, the RC threshold is set to 30 billion. Actually, account claim cost is around 11 billion RC. If your RC quota raises over the threshold, the app will claim for a new account. You can easily change the RC threshold in the .env configuration file.

To run the app continuously in the background, you can use use PM2.

  1. Generate ecosystem.config.js file with pm2 init command and add the environment variables in the file.
  2. When you are done, start the app with the following command:
    pm2 start ecosystem.config.js --env production

Feel free to fork the repository and submit your changes.

Thanks for reading!

Thanks for the mention. I know how you feel manually calming accounts. I also moved to auto-claim when my RC is at/above 85%.

I have 8,655,328,974,884 RC ... I think still not enough to claim but I will try

ATM, 8 billion RC won't be enough to claim an account. As mentioned in the post, you need at least 11 billion RC (i.e. you need more Steem Power)
Be careful when creating an account not to exhaust your RC or you will find yourself unable to transact for a while.

It's rarely so expensive. I find it bounces around 9 billion, and you can sometimes get it as low as your 8.xx billion RC.

I also wouldn't worry about using it up. At the point when someone has enough to claim accounts, you're recharging fast enough for any normal user to never run out, even if they take themselves to 0.1%

I second that 👌 pretty quick recharge and usually enough RC to do the normal activity.

I wonder what RC stands for and is used for.
Where to find it, how much is needed for a next account?

I also wonder why one wants a second or third account.
Where to get the time to write good content for all of them, staying in touch with the followers... The SP will be a problem too.

Great you can create an app but it beats me what it exactly is doing and how to change/use it.

RC stands for Resource Credits. They are used to allow you to transact on the Steem blockchain.
You can see your available RC on https://steemd.com/@wakeupkitty

I also wonder why one wants a second or third account.

There are many reasons to create a separate account:

You can also use your claimed account tickets to onboard your friend and offer them a free account.

it beats me what it exactly is doing and how to change/use it.

I have to admit it's not for the layman. You will require some devops skills to use it. But it's not a hard one and you may use it for your learning process.

For the moment, I am claiming accounts and not assigning them yet. I hope my friends will come to me and ask to have a Steem account.

steemworld.org has a pretty easy gui for this down at the bottom of the page. Not as good as an automated solution, but it's good for all of us non programmers.

Indeed, steemworld.org is great. But it doesn't remind you to do actions when you have an overbooked memory like me 😉

I don't have enough RCs. Wish there was a way to utilise 5 days of RCs at a go, to claim account and wait for it to recharge.

Yeah, I have been thinking this, too. The best solution I can imagine would be for a group to pool their RCs and divvy up the claimed accounts. But that a account would also control their sp.

We already talked about RC delegation with other witnesses and STINC. It would solve many problems but, unfortunately, I do not see it coming :/

Thank you, I love this! I've been manually claiming for some time now and this could be a huge help (if I can figure it out). Cheers!

Your link for voting for you as witness did not work for m. Anyway, I do not like steemconnect, so I am doing it through steemworld.org - it is much easier there.

I checked the link and it's a valid one. The error might be related to SteemConnect.
And yes, steemworld is easier and Steem Keychain is even more ;)
Thank you for your support and your witness vote @arthur.grafo, really appreciated!

When I claim free Steem accounts, what can I do with them?

When you claim for account creation, you get some sort of "ticket" that will entitle you to effectively create the account on the Steem blockchain.
What you will do later with your newly created account is up to you.

Like a good scientist, @arcange use the long scale :( Sad for me, I need to multiply my SP by 20!

A billion is a number with two distinct definitions:
1,000,000,000 as defined on the short scale (British and American English).
1,000,000,000,000 as defined on the long scale. This is one thousand times larger than the short scale billion, and equivalent to the short scale trillion.

Great work @arcange. I been wondering one thing about RC's for account creation. I have enough SP between my various accounts, but not enough in any one of them. If I delegate SP to one account does that raise its RCs? If so, I could go that route to get some free accounts.

Yes, delegation raise the RC because you are moving vested Steem (SP) from one account to another and RC is based on available SP.

I don't understand this, I'm curious about free account? I think it's free to register, right?

You can register for free using Steemit.com, but you have to wait several days for your account to be "activated".
Having "claimed account" at hand allows you to "create/activate" other accounts instantly.
