Little Cherine Book 09 - BPost053

“But, shouldn’t we try to contact them?”

“With the gifts they have - plus an advanced technology, I am certain they know of us and when they want, they can meet with us or the local Cherinians.”

Dommi decided that our local alternates have been through some traumatic times and it would be better we return to spend time with them. We have helped them with the basics, surprisingly they had not discovered they have healers, and Robbie showed them how to release the slivers their souls now hold, should they be in need of us. For the last night we went to Cyprus for our supper (yes, Kyria Maria is running it, though she had never met any of us. Robbie made certain he left her a lot healthier than she was when we arrived).

So, back we go to the Eqkee.

We are arriving at the Eqkee planet. We’ve been talking about the Eqkee and it surprised us to find out how many are looking forward to meeting Eqkee friends. The Eqkee in Freddie are very popular and it is not unusual to see one or more of them with the Elipians, often hanging upside down from a branch as they talk with their friends.

We are all in a minor panic. As we arrived, suddenly Robbie’s eyes widened in shock and instantly he took over Freddie and we made one crazy jump in time, space and realities. A sliver had just returned to Vincent and he called to Robbie. It was released by Jeskine.

Vincent beat us there by seconds and instantly found himself in the centre of a battle. As Freddie arrived, Robbie left for the void and travelled to Jeskine and Orgg. He strengthened the umbrella of energy Vincent had placed over them.

“What is wrong? Who is attacking you?”

“We don’t know. I don’t think they are from our world.”

Robbie left to examine the city and found that nearly a quarter of it was in ruins. As the void he used his energies to sense where the attack is originating from.

At the same time Freddie came under attack. He released all the spaceships clinging to his outer hull as soon as all their crews jumped back to them and opened up for the Unation ship to leave, so that they could help defend us (they must practice jumping their ships out of Freddie, opening for them could be a weakness our enemies can exploit).

Robbie sensed a platform in space and made for it. Just before he arrived, it jumped and all attacks ceased.

*Freddie, did anyone sense where it went?*

*I didn’t.* We all confirmed we had not either. Only Cherine did not answer. She had curled her arms around her legs and was staring off at nothing, her eyes dark and wounded. Robbie sensed her and returned.

As he took her shivering body in his arms, she squirmed free and blazed with anger as she explained, “They are Cherinians!”

“No Cherinian would kill, you must be wrong!”

Even as he spoke the attacks resumed, this time multiplied in strength and number of attacks. Robbie shouted to Freddie to go to the void. “I’m trying Robert, somehow they are blocking me.”

Before Robbie could leave to become the void, a man appeared with his hands raised. He bowed his head to Cherine. “We have no wish to destroy Freddie or harm the rest of you. Surrender Robert Teller to us and we will leave.” He turned to Robbie. “You do not have the power to fight us at this time, do not allow them to convince you to fight us.”

Cherine was instantly before Robbie, her little fists clenched. “You’ll have to kill all of us first.”

6122

Carefully I made my way, trying not to give the man reason for misconstruing my movement as an attack. “You come from our future? I’m guessing, but I’d say you decided Robert is weaker in your past and because you are losing your battles there, you came to abort the future by making him your prisoner from now?”

“We are not losing any battles, we have returned to prevent the possibility of war so as to save lives.”

I nodded. “Yes, your own lives, for neither Robert nor any of us would kill any innocents, not even to save ourselves. That proves you are losing the battle against us. Thank you for taking the trouble to return in time to give us the courage to face our future when it arrives. You may leave now, unless you are determined to test our primitive powers.”

“I suggest you do as Samantha said, if I am forced to use my powers, I cannot avoid killing all of you.”

“Samuel, you are on our side, don’t be a fool man, join us from now.”

Haven laughed. “He is lying. Samuel has already promised not to join them.”

“Order the others not to attack, I want to talk with you before you leave.” His eyes narrowed as I spoke and I sensed him trying to enter my mind. I blocked him. “No, stay out of my mind. We’ll talk privately, but not within our minds.”

He shrugged and turned to Robbie again. “We had originally intended taking Samantha with, I see that would be the correct action, I was wrong. I demand the two of you surrender or else we will destroy Freddie and kill all of you.”

Samuel disappeared from next to me and I screamed at him to stop. I was too late. He jumped out into space and one of the platforms from the future exploded, rocking Freddie. Within seconds he returned, his face grim.

“Leave right now or else I’ll destroy the rest of you.”

Samuel says there were three people in the platform, two men and one woman. He chose that platform because it had the least number of people, some of the others also held children. We all need to mourn the deaths, but we dare not. It would be as if we are blaming Samuel.

Robbie sat down, pulling Cherine onto his lap. He did not try to hide the trembling of his hands as he lit a cigarette. Allan spoke softly, voicing the thoughts that must have been running through many minds.

“The first skirmish of a future battle has been fought. Samantha, please ask Arthur, are we still prime or have they forced a split in our reality?”

“You know the answer, we are prime.”

“What are they then?”

“Part of the prime, if they come from our reality, who tried to force a loop but failed. I refuse to insult Arthur by asking him.”

He shrugged a shoulder. “History will tell them they made the effort and failed, why would they return? It does not make sense, but then, I suppose we’ll have to draw our comfort from your confidence in him.”

“Perhaps you too would be stronger if you had the same confidence in him? What difference does it make Allan? Whatever changes they have brought to our future, it will not save us from having to fight them.”

6123

As soon as our visitor left, Samuel also disappeared, walking alone at a distant part of Freddie. It took us nearly ten minutes to realise that the four had also disappeared. We wondered whether they’d left of their own volition or been taken as possible allies.

We may have had fair warning from the prophecy, but I do not think that any of us, apart from Robbie, truly believed until this day, that it is to happen. We are all in shock - and I do mean all, each and every person of every species. For this one day all experiments have come to a standstill, everyone concentrating on Robbie. As for him, once he was satisfied that none of us needed him urgently, he bent his mind to the planet below us, communing with Jeskine and Orgg, promising to join them as soon as he can.

There were many who did not want Robbie to leave Freddie. They all wanted him to stay with us where they can lend their support if needed. Quickly they organised groups and jumped for Earth, offering their healers, returning the dead and rebuilding wherever they could. For this once the family obeyed their wishes and we stayed by the taverna.

“The dead were one hundred and forty six, all Normals, most of the dead were Neans - they did not kill even one Cherinian!”

“Did they try?”

“It seems not, no Cherinian reports being attacked directly.”

Robbie’s pallor almost made him look like a corpse. This was confirmation of all his worst fears for our future, the future of Cherinianism. Cherinians killing Normals, as if they are not fully human and do not deserve the same respect as Cherinians. Dommi, Rosie, Diana and I clung to our two Cherines, smothering them with our physical presence while our minds and hearts encouraged them and Robbie had Noelle and Aganthi to help him. It did not take long for him to realise his Cherines needed him (the fastest way of forcing him to recover, but he pays for it later) and kissing the girls who were with him he put them aside and came to his prime loves. Cherine looked into his eyes, wanting to cry out that she does not want them using her name, but she held the words back for his sake and for all those who are true Cherinians. Iona crouched before Robbie and the Cherines, her mind keening, and Allan rushed in to place her on his shoulder and caress her. She has grown slightly, but she managed to press her body into the side of his neck for comfort.

On the day after our arrival, the three kings, eight teachers and four Neans jumped to Freddie with Jeskine and Orgg. Jeskine had given us advance warning and we were waiting for them at the taverna.

King Meesartus knelt before Cherine to take her hands in his. “We saw them attacking Freddie, but Jeskine ordered us not to interfere, you are well?”

“She was right to stop you, they would not have hesitated to kill you.”

Orgg, gave his huge toothy grin. “We knew they would lose.”

“We only survived without losses because of Samuel, he blew up their platform. Please do not feel complacent, they have powers I do not even know about - for instance, they were able to block Freddie, stop him from jumping to the void. They are from our future.”

“They claimed to be Cherinians!”

“They are linked as Cherinians, but I do not consider them Cherinians. Meli, a name for them please?”

We accepted a name from Iona. She named them after a poisonous plant of their world, one that kills her people. In Terran, they are the ‘Ipohin’. Allan was delighted that we accepted her suggestion and spent the entire day showing her how proud he is of her. I liked the fact that a child named them for us. Even Cherine feels happier now.

6124

Our visitors did not spend all their time with us. Most of them ended up talking with others, only Jeskine and Orgg staying by our side. Orgg had wanted to find Samuel to thank him, but we convinced him it was not a good idea. They kept on pressing us to return with them so that their people can see that we are unharmed. Robbie nodded his agreement.

“Our family will go with you, Cherine and I will join you later, when we are free to come.” He turned to Cherine. “It is time love, he has had enough time alone, he needs your help.” I was so proud of her when, without the slightest show of reluctance, she jumped to Samuel. Quickly I asked the others to leave without me. They all thought I wanted to write for you, so nobody was upset.

Samuel looked up as she arrived, with a questioning look. She gave an impudent grin. “When someone wiser than me tells me I should do something, I obey.”

“I’ve never thought of Robert as wise.”

She lost her smile for a moment. “I was talking of Perikli.”

“I’m sorry. You are referring to the advice he gave me?”

“Yes.”

He sat up straight. “I have a lot of respect for him, but I do not see why you felt this is the time I need to speak to you.”

Suddenly she saw part of the truth and laughed. “I think it is me who Robert thinks needs to speak to you.” She brought him up to date and he nodded with pleasure when she told him our new name for the anti-Cherinians.

“It is apt. Still, they will continue to call themselves Cherinians, whether you like it or not.”

She shrugged, blocking her thoughts. “It does not matter, as long as the real Cherinians, like you, think of them as Ipohin. Samuel…”

When she hesitated, he guessed. “You must not burden yourself with the responsibility for everything that is done in your name.”

“I can’t help it. If I had never existed, none of this would happen.”

“True. You do recall that we are speaking within Freddie, a sentient world filled with people from a large number of species who call each other family? You do remember why it was the Sparklers came to us? No Cherinians equates with no people. How could that be better?”

She gave an embarrassed laugh. “I know, but it still hurts.”

Samuel put on an exaggerated pretence of looking all around. “Robert is not sharing? How could you use the hurt word without him jumping to smother you in his love?”

She giggled. “The only one not respecting our privacy is Samantha.”

“That was meant to reassure me?” His face relaxed as he listened to her laughter.

Cherine giggled again. “She says she has more important things to do than listen to two children being silly.”

I withdrew to wonder at how life turns out. Robbie sending our Cherine to Samuel for him to help heal her? At least he is also being healed. Arthur, I am troubled and my heart is sore, will you chat with me?

6125

6126

Jesus! Okay, but I’m going to have to fight with him, he does not want to. We’ll chat later. Thanks.

* * * * *

My fingers are trembling so much I can hardly type. Oh god Arthur, how do I tell you? This is Tina. Sam did not want to tell you, but we decided you have to know.

Robert took Cherine, as you suggested and they timed it to arrive within the platform a split second before Samuel exploded it. They found out who the three are and now we know who their leader is. Sam sent to me that I must write in the correct order. Okay, there is not much to say before I tell you.

The instant Robert felt who he is, he desperately tried to stop the explosion, not giving a thought to the consequences of altering our future. As the platform exploded and the three souls disappeared, he went to the void, but they had not gone there. If you spoke truly then they must have returned to their time; if not, we are doomed.

Almost without thinking, not even caring that he was carrying Cherine with him, he crossed into a different reality, screaming his pain. He threw Cherine out of him, into the void, and dived at a sun in the hope it would tear his soul, shred it beyond recovery.

At the last second he remembered Cherine and the pain she must also be feeling and he swerved, just grazing the sun’s atmosphere. He was using so much energy that he affected the sun and it sent out a huge flare, knocking him out of its orbit.

After grieving on their own, the two of them returned to us and when they told us what they’d learnt it knocked the hell out of all of us. Arthur, their leader is the son-to-be of Robert and Cherine! Can you feel how this knowledge has destroyed us?

I’m sorry, that was not fair of me, I should have told you, not left it to Tina to do so. Arthur, none of us blame you, your suggestion was logical. Nobody could have guessed what we’d learn. How do we go on now? Cherine is swearing she will never have his son. Can she change the future? If she does have a son, how will the knowledge we should not have affect the way we feel for him? We cannot keep it a secret, not only because too many know, how do we prevent him from seeing the truth in our minds? We cannot refuse to share with him! There is no way out for us this time, we have no fight left in us.

I told you, we do not blame you - we had to know, it is important that we do. Cherine is going to be furious with me, but can you write for us and make it happen that she has a son, but he does not turn against us?

Thank goodness for the difference in our time rate, it gave me time to get here and write before you answer Sam. Arthur, this is Cherine. I first want to tell you that you must not blame yourself, when we shared with Sam and saw your suggestion we thought it was brilliant. How could anyone have foretold the result?

The other reason I came is because your Samantha, just this once, is blind to you. She had not realised your chats have changed. Why Arthur? Why did you try to help what is for our future when you do not expect to be around? I know something is wrong, so tell us.

6127

What is Cherine talking about? What is wrong?

Okay, I’ll respect your wish to stay silent for now, we already have too much pain to bear. But I will be worrying.

We are stuck here in Orgg’s reality. We do not have the heart to meet people and travel. It feels as if it is all pointless. I’ll admit that for this once I did not even try to find a solution - how could I imagine there is one? As seems to happen whenever we are in distress, Christós arrived. He listened to our news with a sad look in his eyes, but he did not try to console us. He left for a few hours and returned with Jesus and another three alternates of his. He told us they’ve decided that from now onwards there will be one of them at all times in Freddie or on any world we are. We understood they are doing so to help us should we be attacked again. I should mention that they brought another man with who is not an alternate of anyone we recognise.

Jesus offered to continue giving Angelica lessons, but she is not interested. He spoke to her very sternly and she went off with him. As he made her do her exercises we felt how she changed, returning to her normal chirpy self. When she came back to us we all showed her that we were glad she is feeling better. She deflated a bit, but made a point of sitting by me. At a moment that everyone was paying attention to Allan, she whispered in my mind, *Aren’t you going to manipulate anyone?*

I guess that was all I needed for my mind to start working again. I excused myself and jumped to my waterfall. Later, everyone was annoyed with me for waking them at three in the morning, but my mind was chuckling, amused and awed by what I’d thought of. Since I sensed I’d woken them, I jumped home and throwing off my clothes I grabbed our Angel and hugged her to me.

“Are you going to tell us what is so funny?”

I stared into Angel’s eyes for a moment and only then answered grumpy Cherine. “I’ve decided we must have your son.”

Robbie sat up, but did not ask, so Dommi did, since Cherine was choking on her anger. “She must? Why?”

“I need someone to manipulate.” There was a silence, the kind when you’ve made a joke in bad taste, and then Robbie chuckled. When his chuckling turned into laughter I knew he had guessed and that I was right. Cherine calmed herself and thought about what I’d said. She did not find it amusing, but we all felt the way her hearts were beating.

In a very soft voice she asked, “You better explain Sam.”

“Angelica reminded me that I love manipulating events. Why not this one? You know that any son of yours will be adored by all of us, as you would love our sons. Ask yourself then, why would he turn against us? What if I convince him he should break away from us publicly so as to draw to him all those who wish to get rid of Robbie. He must not sabotage or betray them outright, it is enough that he makes the right mistakes when he should.” They felt the pain in me, so I did not hide my fear. “Cherine, how will he bear being a part of killing innocent people and destroying minds?”

Even Robbie kept quiet, everyone waiting for her decision. When she was ready, she tossed her head proudly, “Are you suggesting a son of ours would not have the courage to do whatever is needed to save Cherinianism and his father?”

Unwelcome tears filled my eyes. “He might have to win Cherine. He might have to be seen to be victorious so that he can continue to guide them.”

“What are you talking about!?”

6128

“I don’t know, it is just a vague possibility I sense may be true.” A thought came to me. “Freddie, how did they stop you from going to the void?”

“I’m not certain Samantha. If you are implying our son stopped me, then it suggests I will have to find a way and teach him.”

Tears ran down my cheeks at Freddie calling him my son - and his. Of course that is what he will be. A son to each and every one of us. Aganthi pulled me to her. “Enough for tonight Roberto, she must sleep.”

“Would you like to sleep in my arms?”

“Can I stay with Aganthi?”

“Whatever my sweet daughter, I just thought you might need someone to handle you when you wake up with a new bunch of crazy ideas.” Everyone laughed and the confidence it showed in me helped restore my spirits slightly.

When we arrived at the taverna we found all our close friends already there (it does not entail much of a sacrifice for them since we usually get up so late). Jesus looked over at Christós and they both grimaced.

“Okay, where is he?” Jesus asked in a stern voice.

We looked at each other but nobody understood who he was referring to. “Who?”

“Your Jesus! A miracle has been at work since we saw you last night. Cherine even smiled!” I promised myself I would not hold it against him when the jokes started.

Robbie asked us to place a cone of silence around the taverna after he told the crowds that we had something to discuss in private. We shared with those he’d chosen, Dommi monitoring that nobody was trying to eavesdrop on our thoughts. She is skilled and finds it easy to recognise those unconscious efforts our minds make when we are curious and she deflects them without anyone sensing her.

Alki forgot himself in his enthusiasm and grabbing me raised me high and then brought me back down for a kiss. “Bravo koukla mou! This is the best idea you’ve had for a long time.”

Once they’d settled down, they discussed my proposal in earnest, trying to think of what could go wrong. They found it difficult doing so, for Cherine was emoting her happiness. Maybe they’ll think more effectively later on. There is much that can go wrong, for we do not know the personality of our unborn son yet.

Empathia tried to send me her thoughts for me to act on, but I refused, demanding she speaks. “The four are gone into our future and everyone else here cares about us. I think we must ask them to keep what happened a secret. Not that we were attacked, but who their leader is. A secret of this importance cannot remain a secret, but it might buy us the time we need.”

Haven violently shook her head. “No, that is not enough! I say we should bind those who are here as our allies. They will have to learn why Cherine will have a son so that they do not harden his heart with accusations of what they think he will do as an adult.”

Iona surprised us. First she projected as an adult to emphasise her point and then asked, “Are you certain he is an adult?” The meaning of her question was not lost on anyone and we stared at her with dismay. A child, manipulated by others, might not be as open to our thinking. Especially if he has a rebellious streak.

6129

“Goldi love, will you please carry our invitation for the three kings, Jeskine, Orgg and Mintus? Let them know we are going to do a telling for them and our friends here. If we are invited by King Meesartus, announce we will all visit their city afterwards.”

When we did not show our friends on this world the courtesy of jumping to a different reality for the telling, I realised that I may have given us a reason to hope, but everyone is still too deep in their thoughts and worries. The next day Robbie asked Freddie to jump.

Even those who cannot come to our tellings do not miss out entirely, Freddie shows it on the screens - unless something else important has to be monitored. Though everyone knew of the telling, Samuel did not come, but after it started he changed his mind and quietly joined us, sitting at the back. I got up and went to sit by him.

I was blatantly monitoring him (and he knew it), but he could not hide his relief when Arthur told us that souls cannot be destroyed by anything in our space. When he watched our decision for Robbie and Cherine to return in time to identify his victims, he felt a few moments of peace within himself. When he found out that he had killed the body of our future son he cried out and cringing within his mind he blocked me out. He was not the only one who learnt the truth through the telling and the girls decided to stop the telling for that night - even though there was but half an hour to go for it to end.

Robbie raised himself above the crowd. “We will take a break for an hour. It is important you watch the last few minutes of our telling tonight, so please try to calm yourselves for my loves to continue.”

I took Samuel’s hand in mine. “Please do not leave, the last bit is very important.”

“Cherine must hate me.”

“Why should she? We are all still grateful to you for saving us.”

“At the cost of her son’s life!” He was shocked and he let me sense (maybe not deliberately) how we sank in the esteem he’d held us in. I pretended not to notice and kept my hand in his, hopefully a warm reminder for both of us of how much this strange man has come to mean to me.

At the end of the telling Robbie took the stage, Cherine by his side. “You have been shown the prophesy and seen the evidence that it is true. We have kept nothing back, even disclosing our secret thoughts and plans.

We sense many troubled minds. Is it that you are asking yourselves what does the prophesy truly signify? Why does Robert become the enemy of all Cherinians?” There were no murmurs of assent, but we sensed their thoughts that flowed like ripples on troubled water.

“Have you all heard of my preference for goats to sheep?” He grinned. “For those of you from different cultures, sheep like to be herded, their lives ordered by shepherds. Goats are ornery creatures that do not enjoy obeying senseless rules and prefer to think for themselves.”

An Akiard called out, more in jest than seriously (I think), “We have seen both sheep and goat flesh on your table. Their fate is the same?”

“All creatures die, how we live is what matters.”

“Are goats not destructive to the environment?” a Terran called out.

Robbie was being side-tracked and we all listened with amusement as he struggled. Cherine let go his hand and took a step forward. “I am a goat.” Quickly all us girls seconded her and thereafter our friends and family, followed by a large number of those who ringed the stage.

6130

“I’ll leave it to Samantha to debate your questions.” A number of people laughed. “When communities are small, it seems most of the people are goats. As the populations grow, the majority turn into sheep. Why? Because they are not fighting for survival in ways their instincts understand and they give in to what is easy and comfortable. That is why governments in almost all nations on our world claim to be democratic, but are patriarchal or matriarchal dictatorships. The servants of the people decide what is good for them and laws are passed that take away the rights of everyone.

I had a dream, if I may paraphrase Luther King. I dreamt of worlds and realities of Cherinian goats. I dreamt of a people who sensed they belong to a brotherhood that spans realities, species and time. I dreamt of a people who rejoiced at the gift of empathy Cherine gifted to them. I dreamt of a people who felt the pain in others as keenly as they feel their own.

The prophesy warns us that my dreams, to a large extent, will not become reality. There will always be those who seek power and wealth at the expense of their brothers and sisters. Unfortunately this is not only true of my species.”

A great sadness flowed out from him, touching every mind that was reaching out in an effort to understand him. “To some it has always seemed that I have an option. Do all we can to spread Cherinianism to every species and as many realities as we can and then, withdraw, allow the few goats to take over while the sheep content themselves with the gifts of perfect health and eternal lives. Can anyone tell me what the consequences will be?”

By now nobody was in the mood to provide amusement for the sake of a laugh or to show off their wit and nobody answered him.

“When people do not take responsibility for their own lives in their hands, but bow to decisions of those who consider themselves wiser, they stop growing as souls and revert to childish fantasies. Be responsible, do not have too many children or else all will starve? Why? It is the responsibility of the governments to see that there is food and space for all. Do the governments have an answer? Often it is nothing less than declaring war. It serves three purposes. Kill enough of the enemy so that you can take their reserves for the prosperity of your people. Send enough soldiers to battle and die that your own pressures are reduced to manageable proportions. And thirdly, the most important for those in power, use your army and technology, use the fears and patriotism of your people to pass new laws that take away even more of their rights so that your position is cemented, more absolute. Do any goats protest? Make it unpatriotic and treasonous to protest and get rid of your goats.

With a million years available to us, would things change for the better by themselves? I think not. We’ll have swings, but in the end the weak will always rule the strong, for they are in the majority and will repeatedly give or allow their governments the power of absolute rule.

My apologies to the species who do not have this problem. I cannot tailor my dreams to suit your realities only, I have a responsibility to all - and that must include my own species.

Do you wonder, if the future is so clear and bleak, why does he continue to dream? I have to, without my dreams I would not be Robert Teller. There is another reason. I dare not, not while I have a Cherine at my side.”

Amsiu called out, “There are some species who do not believe the individual is paramount, their loyalty to their species outweighing the needs of the few. In other words, not all of us subscribe to your belief in goats. Are you also asking them to stand by your side in your quest?”

“Amsiu, not one of your people is a Cherinian, I will not ask why. However, may I ask you, were you willing to sacrifice your people for the universal good of all species? Why? Should any other species be worthier than your own people if what you ask is true of your people? Do you not also search for the goats among you so that they can lead you? If you all turned into sheep and no more goats were born, how would you be ruled? How would your people grow? How and what dreams would motivate you?”

Theatrically Amsiu gave a Terran sigh, “I only asked a straight forward and simple question.”

“No Amsiu, you did not. You asked a question that goes to the heart of what being a Cherinian and a fully responsible adult is. We are each responsible not only for our own actions, but also for those taken in our name.”

Next [Book 09] - Post 054

I hope you enjoy reading this story of fantasy, adventure and love - and should some of it be true for our reality, I hope you will love our Cherine.
