Hello friends,

It’s been awhile since I made any drawings or paintings,so today I decided to draw a portrait of a woman. I wanted to try working with just a pencil. When I was a student I remember there was a period in my life when I liked using just a regular pencil. At that time it was looking so good that even my teacher was impressed.
In different architectural projects we had to use different mediums, so I had to switch to another material after
I was done with that project. Somehow I didn’t even have time to get back to drawing with the pencil, all I used it for was mostly drafts but not an actual drawing o a sketch.

So on a New Year’s Day, I thought well, why not to try it again? What should I say, I enjoyed it. It was as satisfying as many years ago, but I need some more practice with a rough hatching or shading.

In this little drawing I was trying to show the contrast between the background and the face on the left side, and also I wanted to show the messy hair without too much of details.

Materials used.

Regular pencil HB

Regular pencil H

Regular pencil B

Pink Eraser

White paper for sketching

  • I first made an outline of the whole drawing to get the feeling of how much space do I need.

  • Then, I made a slight draft of the face and switched to the messy hair part and the background.

  • I was working on hair and the background at the same time because in the beginning I usually work on the picture as a whole element and later I work on details and at the end I have to do last strokes to kind of unite all the lines together so elements would look as a one object and not many different pieces.

  • After the background and hair were pretty much done I proceeded to person’s face and worked on eyes, nose, mouth and a few wrinkles around them.

Thank you. I was practicing from a picture but turned out as a face of my friend:-)

I really want to make portraits of my own kids one day.

You really did well. I love How your shading strokes created a fine texture that best describes her mood.
