How I spent the first day of Chinese new year, life of an OFW.

Good day everyone. I hope you're all doing well. Since Chinese new year has passed, I'm happy to share with you what we did on its first day.

We had visitors that came for breakfast that day and we were so busy preparing for the food to serve. Before that we add some decorations in the house. The Christmas tree was still on the corner, we just replaced the previous decorations with Chinese new year one. Madam also put up some decorations that I cannot understand the writings.

She also added an artificial flowers instead of real one. Put the fresh leaves instead of willow flowers.

After putting up some decorations we start to prepare the food. I steamed the glutinous rice that they bought the day before. Fry yam cake and plate some Chinese new year cookies. I didn't get the chance to take photos of those things at that time because my boss was with me busy preparing.

We have a lot of cookies and mandarin oranges. These mandarin oranges are an important symbol of Chinese new year. It symbolizes abundance, fortune and happiness. Not only that, but the shape of the mandarin oranges alone symbolize good luck. People are buying tons of oranges just to give away.

People that come to visit always bring these oranges to give. It seems like they were exchanging oranges. Coz as they give, my boss also would give back in return. We also bought four boxes before.

We also have plenty of cookies that were sent by relatives and friends. Different kinds of sweets and flavour. I was thankful this year, my boss didn't bake her favourite butter cookies. Last year she did. She was so busy these past few days that she didn't get the chance. I couldn't imagine the mess that I would need to clean if she baked. The whole kitchen would be in a disaster. We would consume the whole afternoon baking if she did.

This was followed by different kinds of drinks, my boss prepared some hot tea and orange juice. Some visitors brought with them whisky and vodka. They drink what they like to.

I can hear them talking and laughing while enjoying the company of each other. We also made some dessert made of snow fungus, gingku nuts, red dates and dried longan. My boss just added some sugar to sweeten it. We served the dessert last.

The breakfast lasted until lunch time. They consume the whole morning. It was more of a reunion breakfast because every family member was present. Exchanging gifts and wishes. Boys are busy drinking while the ladies are busy talking about their lives. When they were about to leave they came to the kitchen and gave me an ampao or red pocket. Giving a red pocket is a symbol of good luck to them. The color red is associated with energy and happiness.
