The first exploration of Dulowa Forest, the land of old mines.

The Dulowa Forest, a green enclave located about 40 minutes from the center of Krakow, is an excellent place for a quick trip outside the city. It is a remnant of an ancient forest that stretched to Krakow in the Middle Ages. It is also part of the Tenczynek Landscape Park established 40 years ago, protecting the landscape and cultural values of the beautiful areas stretching from Krakow to the city of Chrzanów. It is impossible to list all its attractions, which include the ruins of medieval castles, palaces and manors, geological objects, and numerous nature reserves. Huge area for multi-day exploitation, loved by hikers and cyclists. The Dulowa Forest is located in the western part of the landscape park, and its most significant (though not the only) tourist attraction is the ruins of the Tenczyn Castle. The Old Mining Trail, which connects many closed mines and quarries, also runs through the nearby forests.

I came for the first short meeting with the Dulowa Forest on Sunday afternoon a week ago. I needed a rest and a peaceful walk, so I intentionally missed the most popular place - the ruins of the Tenczyn Castle. Nevertheless, the walk was not dull because I found several attractions. It was great - I could adjust the visit to my mood and needs :)

I invite you for a short walk around this green corner of western Małopolska.

About 20 minutes from the parking lot, I found a Black Pond, a small body of water hidden among the trees. People often choose this area for romantic photo sessions due to its wild, charming nature ;)

The main routes are on a gravel road, so even families with children in prams can walk here. Fans of less civilized trails can turn into one of the side paths.

I also came across the remains of a closed hard coal mine.

And finally, I found myself in a diabase mine that had been operating for over a hundred years.

Diabase sounds mysterious, but it is simply a rock of volcanic origin, related to basalt, used as road and building material. I couldn't enter the mine as an unauthorized person, but I could review it from above.

The mine is part of the Old Mining Trail and can be reached on foot or by bike. There is also an option for those who are "tired" - you can park your car near the viewpoint.

The sun went down, and it was time to go home. I was leaving with a ready plan for my next full-days trips. I want to follow the entire trail of the Old Mining and find the ruins of mines hidden among the trees. I would also like to visit nature reserves and castle ruins. The list of local attractions is growing, and I already know that I will not be bored this summer :)

Have a great week 🌼
