The most expensive biryani I have ever eat?!

Hello everyone,
A little story, being a solo traveler is not easy. There are a lot of worries when traveling solo, especially for a newbie like me. No, actually this is not my first experience of solo traveling, but this is my way of giving myself the courage to 'live temporarily alone'. You could say, this is a new way for me to 'me time'.

There are so many people doing 'me time' in so many ways. Women usually go to a salon or spa to pamper themselves with various treatments like a queen. For me, this me time is about how 'reckless and brave' I am and believing in myself.

Singapore is a country that I will explore alone, this is my first time going to Singapore without friends. The last time I went to Singapore was in 2013, that was 11 years ago with my family. When I told my husband I wanted to go to Singapore alone, he gave me permission to do it myself, probably because the country has minimal crime against foreign tourists.

Long story short..

When I arrived in Singapore, it was already 01.00 pm, when the sun was hot and I had not yet arrived at the hostel where I was staying. Because I only brought a backpack, I didn't feel like I was carrying much, so I just explored the culinary scene on the way to the hostel and stopped at several points. Finally I found a halal culinary delight in one of the famous districts which is a tourist favorite. Haji Lane..

I saw a halal restaurant, actually I wanted to look for a vegan restaurant because I had difficulty finding halal restaurants in Singapore. Maybe because Muslims are a minority in Singapore. So I chose between a Malay (Malaysian) restaurant, Indian food and a vegan restaurant. However, I actually found a hidden gem that could be an alternative to choosing cheap food in Singapore.

Is Eating Expensive in Singapore?

Yes, Singapore is a frightening threat to other ASEAN countries because the Singapore dollar rate is very different from the currencies of other countries in ASEAN. 1 Singapore dollar is equal to 11,200 rupiah, where with 1 Singapore dollar, I can buy 1 portion of the cheapest rice in my country.

Here, I even had lunch at a very expensive price. even though, when compared to restaurants and street food in Singapore, this is still the cheapest. So, I bought 1 serving of mutton biryani at Al Tasneem Nasi Kandar. Actually this is not far from my hostel, only a 100m walk from the hostel.

Al Tasneem Nasi Kandar

This restaurant is in front of the Sultan Mosque, Singapore. There are a lot of people eating here, because there is only limited space, there are only a few dining tables and they are on the side of the road. Maybe you have to hurry to finish your food at lunch, there are lots of people queuing and you have to take turns.

There is a menu and prices listed here, so you won't get scammed. For some travelers who often get scammed, they definitely understand that the price tag is a priority when we are traveling outside the city/country. Understand that scams can ruin your mood, which is very annoying.

Mutton Biryani

Well, here's a portion of Mutton Biryani that I got for $9, the most expensive price for a portion of Biryani in the world! Usually biryani is a cheap food, especially in Kuala Lumpur, Indonesia. I once bought a portion of biryani for 35,000 rupiah, around $3.

But I am quite satisfied with the taste and service. You know, I couldn't finish my entire plate because it was a very big portion. I asked for the rest of my plate to be wrapped and maybe I would eat it when I was hungry in the afternoon. One trick to save money for a backpacker!

Are you the same as me?! Comment below.

See you the next time hive friends!

Oh yes, it's difficult to cook a Biryani, especially to have the specific color, ingredients need to be balanced and too many of them. So prefer it eating 😉

Traveling alone it's really a nice experience, I travelled a lot by myself around Europe before I get married ,now when I save some money I travel with my husband if we go abroad , so sorry to hear it was hard to find a restaurant halal I think it will be harder here in Italy that there are one few Muslim communities,by the way the biryani looks good 👍
