Spheal Community Day Recap

I made the thumbnail from an image I took last year or the year before in the snow. I was rolling this huuuuge snowball while friends were making small snowballs and trying to hit a sign from a distance. Then I placed the huge snowball in the corner as shown in the photo and joined them in the fun. In Pokémon Pinball Ruby & Sapphire there's a mini-game where Spheal roll down a slide, with that in mind I decided to add one Spheal in here that's rolling in the snow. We didn't have snow yet by this event, so I used an older photo.

Ahoy! The monthly Community Day took place yesterday, Sunday January 16th. I briefly mentioned this at the end of my previous blog post. It once again took place from 11 am through 5 pm local time. This event featured Spheal, the Clap Pokémon. It already had its Shiny form in the game, as I've shown my Shiny Holiday Costume Spheal in the blog post about those events.

Evolving Sealeo, the Ball Roll Pokémon, into Walrein, the Ice Break Pokémon, during the event or up to two hours after the event would teach it not only 1, but 2 moves exclusive to the Community Day. The Fast Attack "Powder Snow" and the Charged Attack "Icicle Spear". This Charged Attack is making its Pokémon GO debut with this Community Day. Some other Pokémon are likely to get it added to their moveset sometime in the future. I'm not sure which ones, but if others are getting access to the move Niantic will likely have a post about it when they add it.

This move will help Walrein to become a stronger attacker, apparently giving it a huge leap in PvP viability. For PvE I assume it's still outshined by several other Ice-type Pokémon due to its lower overall attack stat and thus lower CP. I've got no idea about its proper ranking compared to the other Ice-type attackers. If you evolved a strong one it might be good to use, or compliment your Ice-type teams.

I spent a part of the event at home while I was eating and having a coffee. At that time I was just catching the Spheal that spawned at home and I activated an Incense to get some more spawns. After eating and preparing some food and water for the day, I went out and met up with friends who were already walking around. I continued walking around with all 3 of them. Until one of them went home, then I just walked around with the other 2 friends.

It was quite a cold day, I really felt it in my hands by the end of the day. Luckily I was wearing a warm jacket and made sure to wear two pairs of socks to have warmer feet. Which was a good decision as I was mostly warm, just my hands that felt the cold.

Here's a Shiny Spheal encounter from the event.

Throughout the event I managed to catch 21 Shiny Spheal. When I filtered on Shiny & age0 I get 23 in the list as you can see here.

That's because a few minutes after the Community Day was over, I saw a wild Aerodactyl. I clicked on it to encounter and was quite surprised when I saw it being Shiny! Aerodactyl is actually one of these Pokémon that I seem to have good Shiny luck with, I have it 5 times now. This one's a 3-star Shiny. Here you can see its stats. One of my others is also a 3-star.

When I adjusted the above filter to show 3-star only, I saw that I had 3 Spheal. I also have a Shiny Spinda showing up here. I got it on Saturday when I completed a Field Research task for one. Because it was early evening it still shows up with "age0" as that filters on anyting caught in the last 24 hours.

With 3 Shiny Spheal as 3-star, I decided to transfer all the others. Then I could keep one of them, evolve two into Sealeo and then evolve one of them further into Walrein. For the one I evolved into Walrein I chose the best out of those. You can see the chosen Spheal here and see what it looks like when I evolved it to Walrein.

No new Pokédex registry because Spheal is one of those Pokémon that I already evolved a long time ago. The Shiny Sealeo and Walrein are new to the Pokédex though! I already had the whole evolution line Lucky, but a friend didn't have it yet so after the event I traded with them until one of the traded Spheal turned Lucky.

Here you can see my Spheal Pokédex entry before and after the Community Day.

This event had a 3x Catch XP bonus, so I made sure to try and throw as many Excellent Curveball throws as possible. It succeeded often, sometimes my throw is a bit off and it lands under the circle. At times it was still too big so it was a Great throw. Overall I did get a lot of Excellent throws. I wish there was a tracker for that somewhere so I could've taken a screenshot of those stats before and after. Catching Spheal with an Excellent throw resulted in more than 3000 EXP per catch due to the 3x Catch XP.

It was a kinda cold day, but I was well dressed for the weather so mostly my hands were really feeling it. When I got back home I warmed up. I've evolved the Shiny Spheal shown in the photos and then some that could have decent PvP stats. Those were still pretty bad stats, but I did evolve it too because I had the Candy anyway. Better to have it if I do play some PvP someday and want to use it. Although those would need a replacement.

How did your Spheal Community Day go?

This month there will be a second, but shorter Community Day. Back to Basics featuring Bulbasaur. One of the first ever Community Days after Pikachu was featuring Bulbasaur. Back then they lasted for 3 hours, so this one with Bulbasaur is going to be from 2 pm through 5 pm on Saturday, January 22.
