The dynamics of the modern workforce portray two popular modes of employment - traditional employment and the freelancing system. Several factors influence our decisions to choose one or the other. Ultimately it relies on individual preferences.
It is in our nature as value-seeking individuals to gravitate toward the paths that best suit our interests. Different strokes for different folks, but the goal remains a stable and secure personal financial system.

What is Freelancing?

Freelancing is a means of self-employment where a person has more control over their schedules and work-flow. Freelancing is the opposite of a nine-to-five in terms of long-term commitment. A freelancer is known to work on different projects for different clients usually on a short-term basis. For instance, a copywriter or a web developer can choose to work on different projects at their chosen intervals, instead of being bound to a single long-term contract.

Who is a Traditional Employee?

A traditional employee works under a formal contract usually for an indefinite period. This is more formal and built on a structured system with set working hours and monthly remuneration. This mode of employment is more stable in terms of income and job security, unlike freelancers who have the freedom of control and autonomy. A few months ago, I tried switching from freelancing to a proper nine-to-five and I have to admit I didn’t last very long.

In choosing between becoming a freelancer or a regular employee, one must consider the impact they have on their values and choose the one that best suits their lifestyle and abilities; depending on their financial dreams, portfolio goals, and aspirations. I enjoy the freedom the value of my work to me as a freelancer. Right now it is what works; working as a contractor but still maintaining my flexibility, drive for more and ability to work for myself.

I love the opportunity that Hive gives me to work for myself. To create this amazing world of web3 and share my ideas with a wider range of the world. I love the sense of purpose and identity that comes with it. It is one part of my freelancing that I consider fun and equally rewarding.
We are wired to find purpose in our careers as we pour so much of ourselves into it. That’s why it important to make sure that we know what keeps us shiny and going.

Some arguments in favor of Freelancing are:

  • Flexibility: The flexible work routine of freelancing is one of its best qualities. Having the liberty to choose and set your schedules, and where you wish to work from is a great advantage. Who wouldn’t want to work in a flexible environment that is subject to their control?

  • Multiple Streams of Income: A freelancer or an entrepreneur has the rare advantage of creating diverse streams of income by indulging in several projects or clients.
For instance, a cryptopreneur which happens to be a great example of a freelancer has access to limitless earning opportunities. Unlike the 9-5 tradition that only offers monthly payments and bonuses.

  • Time and Autonomy: Freelancer is privileged to have full control of their autonomy. They have full rights over time and can allocate in the most suitable ways. Freelancer is in an easier position to chase their dreams and spend tailor their work around their passions.

  • Global Opportunities: Freelancers can reach a wider range of audiences and clientele due to a lack of location barriers. Folks can take jobs and work remotely on projects from different parts of the world. This offers wider professional networking and opportunities.

Some Arguments in favor of Traditional Employment are

  • Stability: One of the cutest things about traditional employment is that it offers a stable flow of income. A freelancer without a committed contract of employment does not have a guarantee of a regular paycheck and other employee benefits. Traditional Employees are entitled to health insurance, retirement plans, and a safety net of job security.

  • Career Growth and Structure: One of the perks of traditional jobs is the benefit of mapped out career paths, allowing employees to climb the corporate ladder and gain access to professional development and career growth. Traditional employees are entitled to raises, promotions, and other juicy benefits.

  • Social environment and Support: Social culture and general support is one of the benefits of working in a traditional office environment. It provides opportunities for social interaction and brainstorming with colleagues and supervisors. Having a structured work environment encourages a sense of belonging and teamwork among co-workers. A freelancer would probably struggle to make such connections because it is not what they are used to.

Conclusion

Different factors influence our preference for freelancing or traditional employment. We are encouraged to find what works for us and do that. There are factors related to economic conditions, personal tolerance for risks, industry influence, employment trends, personal responsibilities, skill set, etc.

Both work modes have their unique characteristics, advantages, and disadvantages which we must all put into consideration before making such career decisions. We can’t have it all; choosing the path of freelancing has its obvious benefits, however, the risk of instability, lack of structure, and unforeseen risks are inevitable.

Traditional employment could provide stability and long-term sustenance but it lacks the element of autonomy and liberty to work on your terms and without the supervision and control of a superior. We must pay attention to our goals, passions, values, and the implications of both options to help us make the right decision.

Thank you for stopping by.
