Making Career Choices at an Early Stage

avatar

I believe positioning and strategy is everything when it comes to making career choices. The formative years of our lives is usually the best time to imbibe habits that will stick and make decisions that could last a lifetime. Such decisions impacts the trajectory of our adulthood most especially, but our professional lives. Money is key; learning to get your finances right is equally a valuable lesson that should be taught early on in life.

To avert pressure, one needs to be prepared by taking advantage of time and resources. Sure, there is no hurry in life but, time is precious and it pays to make hay while the sun shines. While we are young, life presents us with enormous favorable opportunities to grow, explore, and discover the things we are passionate about. I believe that the years of exploration should be geared towards finding out what fields, careers, and industries we find more interesting and appealing, once we do that, we start building with the future in mind.

Life is becoming faster by the day, as I get older, I find myself struggling to keep up with the pace unlike back in the day when I felt I had all the time in the world to figure things out. This is not to pressure anyone but I wish I had started earlier to take my career path seriously. If I had the opportunity to prep into the future, I would have taken my education especially my undergraduate programs more seriously; but I did all that mindlessly without even being interested in pursuing it as a career.

The Nigerian Education System also happens to be a joke that writes itself. Imagine applying to the University to study Medicine and Surgery, but they decide to put you in an entirely different department say Micro biology. So, instead of taking another year to reapply without any assurance that you would get what you’re looking for, you decide to just go with the Microbiology. Now you’re locked in for the next Five years studying a course you never wanted. You chances of pursuing a career in Microbiology upon graduation is quite slim. So you graduate and start figuring out your life again.

If it is not the system, it is your parents dictating and telling you what to do. Instead of learning what you like and positioning you to have a six career in your preferred field. I don’t believe any opportunity or discipline is more lucrative than the other; every skill and services is useful and needed, and provided you’re committed, then I don’t see the reason why you cannot succeed at it.

Making career decisions at an early stage lays the foundation for future excellence and success, especially for our children because and younger ones. The best thing we can do for them is teach them from our own mistakes, experiences, and lessons. The easiest path is by helping them choose a path that is aligned with their interests and skills. This will position them to build a strong foundation upon which they’ll grow and excel.
