Good name is better than gold

I wonder at times, if I'm the only one with this mentality.
I grew up being contented with whatever my parents give me. My mum will always tell you never to collect anything from anyone and never to pick things up from the floor be it money or pencil, anything that does not belong to you must not be in your school bag.
This continued till we grew up.

I started adjusting in the university because of my friends and extended family members who think that I don't want to take things from them. Because of how I grew up and the kind of fear my mum has instilled in us about taking things like that, I can't even look at people when they are eating or look at their food.

I once found someone's phone when phone was a big deal, when 3310 was very expressive and that small Nokia camera phone was number one. Everyone in my house including my dad helped locate the owner and returned the phone to him and he thanked us so much that our families became friends.

I just moved into a new neighborhood because of my recent transfer, and I find my neighbors to be very interesting people. They are fun to be with but very myopic in thinking, They don't want to learn anything new because they believe what they know is the right thing. I still wonder why a pregnant woman in a town where we have a general hospital and a mother and child center still prefers the traditional maternity home to a well equipped MCC. I wonder why you can't convince a matured adult to go out and vote without a promise of cash incentive. I wonder why as parents they don't value the education of their children here.

I sent my son to buy biscuits two houses from my house, and he came back with biscuits worth double of the amount i gave him. I was sure of the amount i gave him so I told him to return it. My neighbour told me it was my luck, that I shouldn't return it. I told her I can't eat such neither can my children. She became angry at me that I'm forming holier than thou attitude. I tried to explain to her that it is not about forming, it's to keep such but she didn't listen. My son returned the biscuits and the Shop owner kept thanking me for days after the incident.

Back to the main reason for this post. Few weeks ago, we were discussing about money. Someone was wishing to find money in her account. So, I told her that if such happens, it is a mistake and sooner or later the money will be traced back to her account and if it's not a mistake, definitely it is hidden in the account by fraudulent bank officials who will later send it out.
It wasn't a small something at all. They believed that such money was a blessing from God but I tried to let them understand that such money can land someone in jail, but they won't have it. so, I left the issue.

One of my neighbors came back home few days ago and started lamenting about the news trending on socil media about a guy that returned ten million naira that was mistakenly sent into his account to the rightful owner. He was so angry that the guy was a fool for returning the money to the owner. Everyone started looking at the video and they were abusing and cursing the guy for being honest.

I believe that there are things we do for others worth more than monetary value. That 10 million he returned may give him a recommendation worth more that a hundred million.

If I were in his shoes, I will do same. Please, will you call me foolish?
What will you do if you were the one?

Thanks for reading, I really appreciate you.

No, it wasn't stupid if you have 10 million money of someone else you should give back, or karma is there to play with you or, God will give you blessings for doing good things.

Thank you very much, that is true. People don't realize that karma is there. There is always reward for everything we do, good or bad.

I have few experiences where i returned the extra money to the shopkeeper, returned lost mobile and wallet to the owner, helping others is a thing which gives me pleasure. I do all this for my inner satisfaction, when i see my face in mirror, I should be proud of myself. But nowadays, people think otherwise and maybe this is because of the inflation or their way of thinking is just messed up, unable to differentiate between right and wrong. This isnt related to be religious, its about being human.
