Children Deserve Prepared Parents

Okay so the idea that parenthood perhaps the most consequential job on Earth requires no prior form of criteria in societies other than biological capability is a just insane to me. We require licenses to drive cars, certifications to practice plumbing, and years of rigorous academic vetting to teach a classroom of children. Yet, the act of bringing a human life into the world and shaping its psyche for at least twenty years remains one of the few unregulated frontiers of human activity.

Proposing that people should be examined and assessed before having children is often met with immediate, visceral pushback. It dances on a dangerous edge and overreaches into the most private sphere of human existence, I agree. However, if we move away from the "medical sense" the cold, clinical evaluation of genetics or physical health and focus instead on practical readiness, the conversation shifts from one of exclusion to one of preservation and that is the preservation of a child’s right to a stable life.

The primary argument for a non-medical assessment centers on the cycle of intergenerational trauma. Most parents do not set out to harm their children rather, they pass down the unexamined shadows of their own upbringing.

A "psychological assessment" in this context wouldn't be about "passing" a test of sanity, dont get me wrong but rather an evaluation of self-awareness.

The Practicalities for me involves financial and environmental Stability, while the "non-medical" focus emphasizes the mind, the environment is equally crucial. We aren't talking about requiring wealth poverty does not equate to bad parenting but we are talking about resource literacy. Does the parent have a "village," or are they isolated? Isolation is one of the leading predictors of parental burnout and child neglect and yes, the burnout is sooo real

But then again I get the serious question to ask is Who Judges the Judges? The most significant barrier to this proposal is the authority of assessment. If we agree that people should be examined, we must ask By whose standards?

History is littered with the wreckage of "fitness" assessments used to marginalize minority groups, the poor, and the neurodivergent. To implement such a system without falling into the trap of authoritarianism or bias, the assessment would have to be crazy Transparent Based on objective developmental psychology rather than subjective moral or cultural "values."

Instead of a "Permit to Parent," perhaps the assessment should be viewed as a "Mandatory Preparatory Phase." Much like a building inspection identifies a weak foundation so it can be reinforced, a parental assessment would identify practical gaps so they can be bridged through education or therapy.

Learned the basics of child development (e.g., knowing that a crying infant isn't "manipulating" them).

"The greatest burden a child must bear is the unlived life of the parents." — Carl Jung ref : The Burden of Unlived Lives: the Extensive Consequences of Intergenerational Trauma | Certified IFS Therapist | San Francisco Bay Area

If we assessed parents before they conceived, we could encourage adults to live their "unlived lives" before passing that weight onto the next generation.

The Role of Education as Assessment If a formal "test" feels too dystopian, the "assessment" could take the form of mandatory, high-stakes education. Imagine a world where, before heading to the delivery room or the adoption agency, individuals must complete a comprehensive curriculum covering: Conflict Resolution or Financial Literacy, to know the long-term economic realities of raising a human to adulthood, because to be frank raising a child in this era is not cheap.
Currently, our societal intervention is almost entirely reactive. We wait for the child to be neglected, for the abuse to occur, or for the teenager to enter the justice system before we look at the home environment and say, "Something should have been done." and this is not about creating a "perfect" race or a "perfect" family it is about ensuring that every person who embarks on the journey of parenthood does so with their eyes wide open, their trauma in check, and their toolkit full. If we truly believe that children are the future, it is high time we stop leaving their upbringing to chance.

Teenage pregnancies are also prevalent here in our country. It's just sad that kids suffer because their parents are really not ready for parenthood.
