A few days ago, there was a heatwave where I live, following on from another heatwave in July, something that’s been very unusual for the city. Ever since I’ve lived here, there have been days of intense heat in summer, but usually just one or two, followed by milder summer days; this year, however, has been very different. This leads to heatstroke, low blood pressure and general malaise, at least, that’s what’s happened to me and my family. Drinking cold and icy drinks, eating fruit and using a fan has helped a little.

The truth is, I wanted to create a design inspired by things that bring me joy and a sense of freshness, as a way to take my mind off these stifling days for a while, and nature, colours and a surrealist design do just that. Of course, there had to be flowers, trees and fantastical elements. I really enjoyed creating this design and it at least took my mind off the heat and how sweltering the whole flat is. It was like a relaxation exercise and I’ve loved the result.

Hace unos días hay una ola de calor en donde vivo, que le sigue a otra ola de calor que hubo en julio, cosa que ha sido muy anormal para la ciudad. Desde que vivo aquí, en verano hay días de calor fuertes, pero es uno o dos y luego el clima deja días de un verano suave, pero este año ha sido muy diferente. Esto provoca los llamados golpes de calor, baja tensión y malestar, por lo menos a mi y mi familia nos ha pasado. El tomar cosas frías, heladas, frutas y tener un ventilador a ayudado un poco.

Lo cierto es que quería hacer un diseño inspirado en lo que me da alegría y frescura, como para distraer un poco la mente de estos días sofocantes, y eso lo logra la naturaleza, los colores y un diseño surrealista. Por supuesto debe haber flores, árboles y elementos de fantasía. Disfruté mucho realizando este diseño y al menos distraje la atención para no pensar en el calor y lo caliente que está todo el departamento. Fue como un ejercicio de relajación y me ha encantado el resultado.

Design process

The design was created entirely in Photoshop CS6 without using AI, using 9 royalty-free images spread across 13 layers.

To create the background, I used three images: one of a fantasy forest in shades of green, which I used as the first image in Normal mode; a three-colour 3D wave image, which I placed over the previous one using the Spot Light blend mode; and a third image of a fantasy landscape with a waterfall and a rainbow, which I arranged in three layers using the Spot Light, Soft Light and Lighter Colour blend modes.

I then placed several of the images I’d chosen, having first removed their backgrounds, at different scales and positions, rotating many of them, such as the woman’s face in profile using the ‘Hard Light’ blend mode, as well as the hand full of foliage at the other end of the design. Next, I added the tree in the centre of the design using the ‘Spot Light’ blend mode, and the tree with a little house and a lamppost in ‘Normal’ mode over the previous face.

Subsequently, again after removing the background from the image, I selected the flower that resembles a dahlia and arranged it across three layers within the design in different positions and scales using the ‘Spot Light’ blend mode. Finally, I worked on the woman’s face with the leaves, removing practically all of them whilst leaving a few to intertwine with the overall design, again using the ‘Spot Light’ blend mode to highlight colours, contrasts and highlights.

Proceso del diseño

El diseño está realizado completamente en el programa Photoshop CS6 sin uso de IA con 9 imágenes sin derechos de autor distribuidas en 13 capas.

Para crear el fondo usé tres imágenes, una de un bosque de fantasía en tonos verdes que usé como primera imagen en modo normal, una imagen de ondas en 3D de tres colores que dispuse sobre la anterior con la fusión de luz focal y una tercera de un paisaje de fantasía con una cascada y arcoíris que dispuse en tres capas con las fusiones de luz focal, luz suave y color más claro.

Luego fue colocando varias de las imágenes que elegí, borrando previamente en fondo, en distintas escalas y posiciones, dándoles vuelta muchas de ellas, como el rostro de la mujer de perfil usando la fusión de luz fuerte, al igual que la mano llena de vegetación al otro extremo del diseño, luego el árbol en el centro del diseño con la fusión de luz focal y el árbol con una casita y una farola en modo normal sobre el rostro anterior.

Posteriormente, también borrando el fondo de la imagen, seleccioné la flor que parece una dalia y la dispuse en tres capas dentro del diseño en distintas posiciones y escalas con la fusión de luz focal. Finalmente trabajé el rostro de la mujer con las hojas, borrando prácticamente todas ellas, dejando algunas que se entrelazaran con todo el diseño, usando además la fusión de luz focal y así resaltando colores, contrastes y brillos.
