Alternative medicine we can get from our gardens

Hello my beautiful people in this amazing community, and to my new friends in the hive community. I hope you all had and amazing holiday and a great year ahead.

This is my first time posting on this community, and Its my pleasure to write about few amazing plants i came across growing in my mother in laws garden.

Most homes in the south side of Nigeria where i’m from has a little garden, where we plant all sort of crops, leaves and fruit that isn’t just used for cooking but also very medicinal.

LEMON GRASS( scientific name:cymbopogon)

Aside being used to add flavour to food, it can be used for tea and has allot of medical benefits. Examples

  1. Relieving anxiety: study has shown that sipping lemon grass tea helps with anxiety because it has anxiety-reducing propertie, that even the smell of it helps with anxiety

  2. Weight loss: for those wanting to lose weight or control their colesterol, lemongrass has been proven to be beneficial to that purpose

  3. Prevention of infection: Acording to the studies from Memorial sloan kettering cancer https://www.mskcc.org/cancer-care/integrative-medicine/herbs/lemongrass
    Lemongrass has properties that can prevent infection
    For example it reduces the occurance of thrust (a fungal infection that attacks the immune system making it weak, such as those with HIV)

  4. Boosting oral hygiene: eating lemongrass stalk helps improve oral hygiene and keeps the mouth feeling fresh and clean and also kills bacterials that causes cavities.

  5. Lemongrass can also be used to subdue menstral cramps.

  6. It reduces constipation.

how to prepare lemon grass tea

  • cut 2 stalks of lemongrass
  • add into a cup of hot water
  • leave for 5minutes
  • strain the water into a teacup and enjoy.

CASSAVA LEAF


Cassava itself is one of the most economically friendly crop, allot of byproduct can be gotten from cassava exampl Garri, flour , alcohol etc …

And the cassava lead has allot of medical benefits
Example:

  1. It can be used to manage metabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases

  2. Cassave leave has vitamin C properties, a powerful antioxidant for prevention of stroke and prostrate cancer

  3. It also contains vitamin B, that helps to boost mood and vitality

  4. It aids your sexual life

  5. It helps to prevent anemia cause of its high iron contain

  6. Mnimizes the occurance of hypertention.

how to prepare cassave leaf tea for consumption

  1. Boil the leaf for about 20minutes
  2. Strain out the water
  3. Allow to cool down
    It is ready for consumption.

BITTER LEAF

Bitter leaf as the name implies isn’t sweet, but it used as a spice in the western parts of Africa to make delicacies like Egusi soup, ogbono soup, banga soup and even bitter leaf soup. But as much as it is used for cooking, the leaf has properties that is very beneficial health wise.

Example:
1.it improves digestion and helps alleviate inflammatory bowel diseases

  1. It has anti diabetic properties

  2. Lowering of high blood pressure

  3. It enhances fertility in women, since it contains chemical compounds like edotides that support hormonal imbalance and strengthens the body against toxicity.

There are so much more plants with medicinal benefits that you cab get from our garden but these are the ones i have made research on.

The first image. That leaf is called ewe tea in my country. It’s used for medicine too. I guess it’s like that all over the world

Lovely post! I agree that we should all make the most of the medicinal plants that surround us. Oh how I love Lemon Grass! It is such a beautiful herb and one of the first I got to know as an herbalist.
