Say “NO” to Harmful Products

I have always seen in my country Bangladesh everyone has the desire for lighter skin tones which is like pure white milk. People in Bangladesh are born with sensitive skin which can become tanned when they become an adult so, it doesn’t matter how fair their skin looked during childhood. The more fair you are the more beautiful you are seen to everyone. According to the society if you are black or tan then you are not beautiful.

People will call you by names and make comparisons. Which also increases the jealousy between all. Society has set a beauty standard where only fair looking people are valued. I have seen people promoting skin whitening products which is very popular in my country and most of the girls buy them and I have seen only a few guys buying it. Well, approximately 90% girls are buying these products and 10% boys. Boys never felt the need to buy them because mostly girls are criticised for not being fair.

In my 10th standard I had a classmate her name is Mim. At first when we first met we were in 9th standard and she had brown skin back then but one day suddenly I saw her skin glowing she became fair. I was very confused but then I thought she must be taking care of her skin that might be the reason. Then one day I heard she bought a soap from online which she uses to make her skin white before joining classes every morning she would wash her self with the soap. One day she didn’t come everyone was saying that she was sick then suddenly she came to collect homework from us so that she can study later on. Well, actually she lived in the school because there was a girls hostel in on top floor. When she came she tried to cover her hands and face while talking then I saw I full body and face was filled with rashes maybe I have never seen anything like this and it was all over her body and face. So, I understood it was the side effect of using that soap.

Once my parents didn’t come to pick me from school so my class teacher told me to stay with Mim in her hostel room for a while. Because my parents called my teacher and asked to keep me with them. Then the teacher left and I was with Mim on her bed she was talking with someone over phone then a young girl came into our room I asked her which standard she was studying she said in the 7th. Then Mim started to talk with that girl and said that “I have told you before to make your skin white didn’t I? If you don’t then no guy will ever marry you! haha” I was very shocked Mim said those things to her despite being a girl. That young girl seemed upset and embarrassed yet she tried to smile and agree with Mim. Then I said “She is beautiful she does not need to change herself to impress someone and skin colour doesn’t matter!” Then mim was arguing with me then suddenly my mom appeared so, we had to leave the conversation.

In advertisements I have seen the companies are granting the white skin even they are being racist openly and showing that no one likes you, the boys are ignoring you because you are black but when you use the cream you become white and everyone loves you. It’s very saddening that the beauty standard is only set for the people with fair skin. These products are promoting the thought of discrimination based on skin color.

If anyone is claiming that their skin whitening cream can make anyone fair
then it is a myth. This kind of cream does not exist which can make someone look fairer and it’s a facade. I also have seen many aunties who has suffered with the burned effect on skin for using these whitening products.

If anyone wants to take care of their skin then they can use organic way to do that instead of using the products mixed with many harmful chemicals. Yeah, the cream whitening does make the skin white but not for permanent and it’s temporary. If someone stops using it then their skin gets tanned also while using it causes skin issues such as skin cancer and many other things. I know that it’s important to take care of skin health and making skincare routine is important. The use of sunscreen and the products with ingredients like vitamin C. Using these things can help someone to improve skin texture and give a glow look but not skin whitening.

People are thinking these innovation of skin whitening products are helping them but sadly no it’s not helping it’s very harmful and killing, there’s nothing productive about it. In my point of view it’s truly not beneficial at all. Yeah, I know that it’s someone’s personal choice if they want to brighten their skin it’s totally up-to them.

Sometimes, I wonder why girls will like to change their skin, I mean it is not necessary. Black is beautiful, black is fine. And thank you Haya for the short lesson you have given us on skin and how to glow it naturally.

Haya... this is really a nice piece. Not everyone is destiny to be white skin, especially ladies we should appreciate our skin color regardless of any challenges we may face by the public. Low self-esteem and inferiority complex is really affecting many young ladies out there.

I'm surprise even the fair ladies in your country are still looking for what will make them fairer then what will become of the blacks in Africa who buy thesame products to be white...we ladies should be proud of what we have. Thank you.

There is no need to priories skin colour everyone has different choice but does not mean we should criticise someone. Skin colour can't be changed like it's natural. God made us like this for a reason everyone with varieties otherwise we would all look like a clone as same appearance.

You are welcome.

Hahahah. What a mind cracking subject you wrote on. Truly it's alarming how many dark skinned genders want to transform themselves to a lighter colour without thinking of the negative effects of bleaching.

Thanks for shedding more light (no pun intended) on this subject. I've also seen this happening in island nations, like the Bahamas, where my mother was born. From what I understand, this is also prevalent in parts of Africa. It's sad.

Yes, truly saddening can't change the society if we don't take a step.

I am surprised to learn about this. I know Asians to generally have light skin compared to Africans, so I wonder how people would actually want to be even lighter. But then, I think I get it. It has to do with what society thinks of one. Such a thing happens here, or it used to some years ago.

We are generally dark skinned in complextion. There are people who are way lighter than others, and the dark ones try to look like them by using body products to alter their colour. The truth is that they end up looking horrible afterwards. They fail to see that they are beautiful just the way they are.

I'm surprised young people have this mindset of being white means you're pretty. It's not about that. 😕

Kids are being judged by their own family members when they are born brown. Like it starts from the beginning 😔 sad but true.
