🌽 The Beauty of Timing: When Maize Starts to Silk

avatar

HELLO HIVE

My maize farm is at one of its most exciting stages, a period when the maize starts to silk. This is a clear signal that the maize you have spent months farming is definitely going to produce and it is also a make or a break moment of yield potential.

This is a stage when anything you do to the crop could affect the yield but after this point it is no more going to affect the yield, so if you are planning to maximize your yield this is the best time to add one or two things to your farm.

Signs of a Healthy Plant

The plant has to maintain the bright green color, it needs to be upright, the silk is vibrant, and also moist.

The stalk has to be firm and straight.

What to Do Next

It is very important to keep the moisture content constant at this stage, the moment it is altered the yield will be affected we have had certain instances where rain takes a break at this point and then the yield gets bad.

You should also watch out for pest from this stage onward so that they won't have to suck the seedlings that is growing

Pests getting into a maize farm is terrible. It happened to me one of my maize farm,

I have to apply one type of insecticide mixed with water and sprayed on the leaves and stocks of the maize plants. That was it, but really, i spent some unexpected amount.
