NSYNC was initially unknown in the the United States, and they focused in certain European countries Germany, United Kingdom, etc. They were also received well im Asia but not at the Backstreet Boys level. Hence, NSYNC was considered as just another boyband or Backstreet Boys clone.

Their single "I Want You Back" was already a success in European countries and also in Asia back in 1997, until they tried to break the US market, and didn't fail. Initially, sales of their debut album was slow but "I Want You Back" already became top 20 hit in Billboard Hot 100. It also peaked at number 5 in UK Singles Chart.
