A day in the dark

The day started out as a horrible day for Zack, it started in the worst way possible, he woke up late and was pissed he'd overslept, and his phone was terribly low. How could he have forgotten something so simple as plugging his phone in before going to bed? He did it every single day, but this time it escaped his mind. In his defence, it was plugged into his power bank, but he forgot he'd used it for most of the day before. Usually, there was always light when he went to bed and when he woke up, but today when he forgot to plug in his devices was the day the electricity company decided to shock him. He was so pissed.

He decided to take his bath and to his surprise, there was no water running. No electricity so the water didn't pump. He didn't have any engagements today, it was his rest day so it was all good. He'd just stay in his room till there was light and water was running.

He thought maybe he'd get some work done on his Laptop so he switched it on, and of course, he'd forgotten to plug it in. What was he going to do with his day? It was then he realized how important his devices were to his life. They were there for entertainment, for work, majority of his investments, which was where he earned the most were online. Without electricity, it was like his life was greatly disabled. He didn't have anywhere to go because all around him there was no electricity in any of his friend's places (He asked them as soon as he woke up to an almost dead device).

After sitting around and getting tormented by his thoughts long enough, he decided it was best to use his phone a little

"Might as well perish so I know I have no other option"

He used his phone to walk through some crypto investments he'd grown to love, and talked to a couple of friends, and then just as he started working on an important project, his phone died. It'd served him longer than he'd expected but it still felt like he'd got shot in the chest.

At this point, he started to question how people who lived all their lives offline managed to do it because nowadays there are a lot of things online. He started to question why he hadn't bought a lot of paperbacks and why he kept almost all of his books on his devices cause now he might as well have read a book. Eventually, he was enveloped by sleep.

He woke up to the screams of his neighbours as they rejoiced that electricity was back.

"How long was I out?" He thought to himself

He jumped down from his bed and rushed to plug in all of his devices.

He looked at the clock and realized it was 6 pm

"Damn, I have wasted the whole day, this night is for me then. Let my devices charge first."

Later that night his devices were full and it was time to get productive. But first, he had to talk to someone he'd thought about all day.

What started out as a bad day would soon pave the way for an amazing day.

This man just narrated my story; practically the story of many Nigerians these days, and probably yourself included. What you have depicted here are exactly how many of my days go. I'm out at some place far from home just to charge up my devices. Imagine that everyday.

Bro, it is not easy. I actually picked one or two parts from my daily life. Hopefully things get better in the future.

This piece tells us how vital electricity, especially in this advanced tech age. It often affects my emotions. 😄 I'm happy when there's power and sad when it goes off. Thanks for posting your piece in the Scholar N Scribe community.
