How to keep track of your favorite authors using discord bots

A couple weeks back I realized there were so many authors I used to pay attention to, and all of a sudden I barely read their posts anymore. I was thinking aloud in @theterminal's discord server, I said "I wish a hive frontend would integrate post notifications, so we can get to know exactly when some particular authors we want, make a post." As always I learnt something new, this time from @brittandjosie who brought it to my attention that such a feature already exists, although it's not necessarily a hive block chain feature. She brought @ginabot to my attention. With Gina I get notified when an author I select posts, whenever hive and or HBD leaves or enters my wallet, along with all the notifications I'd receive on my usual frontend, I can even receive notifications for more than one account.

Then Just last week or so, the wonderful @dreemsteem brought another notification bot called F.R.I.D.A.Y (Not sure of the full meaning) by @deathwing to my attention. I prefer Friday a bit over ginabot because Friday is still being actively developed, while Gina, I'm not so sure. Nonetheless I make use of both of them. I realized I was having too many different types of notifications on gina, so I decided rather than move everything to Friday, I use Friday for a certain type of notification and gina for the other notifications.

So far I've used them both, and I've got to say they've helped a lot. At least now I know when I miss some people's posts it's because I procrastinated and didn't get back to it, and not because I totally missed it. They've also helped me keep track of all my wallet transactions (Now I know where all my hive-engine tokens come from).

Today a few friends of mine @ijohnsen and @deraaa asked me to explain how it all works, and I decided rather than explain to only them, I'll make a post for others who may not know about it to learn. And since it's on the blockchain I can always revisit it, and share in the future.

How to register and use F.R.I.D.A.Y

I chose to start with Friday, because it is very easy to register with Friday.

First things first you join Friday's discord server by clicking here.

You'll be taken to the welcome page, where you'll be directed to go to any room and use the command /register yourUsername

Since my account is already being monitored by me, I'm using deraa's account as an example.

You'll receive a notification showing it has been registered.

From there you simply head over to Friday's dm and use the command /settings

Then you'll get a link to your settings.

Click it and you'll be taken to settings page

From here you can change settings of accounts you monitor,

change default frontend for the links,

And toggle on and off which activities and transactions you want to see on the accounts hive, hive-engine, and splinterlands account.

After that you'll receive notifications as soon as they happen. I've checked which Is faster, and Friday bot gives me notifications of transactions and activities faster than all the other frontends.

Ginabot

For Ginabot you can go to The terminal discord server and go to the #playing-with-bots room. There you'll enter the command ..reg yourUsername

You'll be asked to send 0.001 HBD or hive to ginabot with a certain memo(this isn't my account so I can't do that). Once you've done that you'll get a dm with a special link from ginabot and your HBD or hive will be refunded. It's advisable to bookmark the link as you'll have to find and use that specific one each time you want to access the settings.

The settings are in a long list but are very self explanatory. Gina doesn't not cover as many transactions as Friday, but it's pretty good as well.

Conclusion

I think if you're like me and find it difficult to keep track of when your favorite authors post, or like to know when every single transaction is being made on your accounts, discord bots are the best option. I'm pretty sure there are other discord bots, but these are the ones I'm familiar with. Thanks for reading, have a wonderful day.
