The Filipino Votes

Action Star Turned Senator

The Commission on Elections has just proclaimed the winners for the senatorial positions in the just concluded May 9 polls. And the person who took the number 1 spot is an action movie star, Robin Padilla. Yup. A movie star who doesn't have a degree in law and has zero experience in legislating laws.

What is this country coming to?

He somehow managed to use his popularity to catapult himself to the Philippine Senate. This is probably his biggest blockbuster with over 26 million Filipinos voting for him.

Sometimes I wonder why this country is still NOT in ruins.

I mean, COME ON! The guy is a f^cking movie star who became famous for being a bad boy on and off screen. What's he gonna do in the Senate floor? Beat up a guy whose a 100-kilos bigger than him or jump off the window of the Senate building. This ain't a f^cking movie where you're given a script and act out whatever the director tells you to do. In this field, you don't get a script. You make the script and by "script" what I mean is law.

And this ain't the first time that an action star had won in the national elections. Back in 1998, another action movie star, "Erap" won the presidency and d'you know what happened to him? He got ousted after just 2 years & 6 months in his 6-year term.

I'm surprised he even lasted that long.

The irony of it is that in one of his movies he expelled the Americans and their US Bases from this country but in real-life he was the one who got expelled from office.

Look, I'm not against these movie stars desire to run for public office. I think they have the right to do so. But they have to make sure that they can perform the duties and responsibilities of the position they're vying for. Coz if you make a mistake, it's the people who will suffer. And there is no second take like in the movies. What are they gonna tell the people? That they're sorry 'coz they forgot their line? Another take?

They Make It Look Easy

Let me share to you a story on why these action stars are so popular in my country.

So the hero only had one bullet left in his gun, right? But he was facing two bad guys.

So what he does is he puts his knife at the mouth of the barrel and fires the revolver, splitting the one bullet left in his gun and hits the two bad guys.

Un-freakin'-believable!

How is that even possible?

I gotta call Mythbusters for this one to see if it's even scientifically possible.

Another one is the hero goes to the villain's hideout to save his beloved. All by himself and starts killing all the bad guys that stand in his way. He only has one gun but this gun is special 'coz it never runs out of bullets. Yes there is a gun such as that.

In the movies.

So he shoots everybody using just one hand and would sometimes use his off hand to shoot the bad guys and he hits them in the forehead.

Without even aiming for the head. He just pointed the gun in the bad guys direction. And it's a headshot.

Yup. Filipino action movies are that unrealistic.

Who in this planet can make a headshot using his off hand and not aim for the head but just point it in the direction of the target, with a high-caliber pistol?

No one. This type of shit only happens in the movies.

I've tried firing a pistol before and it's very difficult to hit the mark even when you're using your strong hand because of the recoil. But these guys make it look so easy.

In Conclusion

I guess people in this country want someone who can do the impossible like solve poverty in the shortest time possible. These action stars did it in the movies. They took down the evil politicians who's been terrorizing and corrupting the country. All by themselves against an army of brainless bad guys. All in just two hours or less.

So maybe people believe the characters that these actors portray in their films. That these actors can actually take down the bad guys in the government all by themselves.

You know what's funny though? I actually voted for Robin Padilla 'coz I thought it would be a good material for a joke. But when they finished counting the votes and Robin was rank #1. I guess everybody thought of the same joke as I did. I guess the joke was on me.

So what the f^ck is he gonna do now that he is Senator?

Glad we're back to decently sized paragraphs lol! I think we might be a few years away from having presidential elections decided by whoever got the most success in the box office.

Haha.. I think they've mistaken the elections to a popularity contest.

It looks like you have your own version of the Governator (Arnie) as president.
Politics is all just a pantomime in my opinion, and they need trained actors to pull it off. ;-)

I totally agree. Most politicians really know how to act, some even better than movie stars. It's probably one of the reason why these actors are entering politics coz they think they can do a better job than these dirty politicians. They're all taking their orders from the man behind the curtain, anyway. So it's the same as doing a movie.

yes this is the reality we are faced with. It seems the same story in every country.

Walter Scott:

"Oh, what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive."

What interests me the most is what are they hiding with their deceptions.

have a great day.

I couldn't help laughing, sorry, when you said you voted for the movie star as a joke and then the joke was on you because everyone else voted for him as well. 😂 A lot of movie stars get into politics after their career in theater ends though. I'm not sure about your country, but I know in some places the thinking is that the technocrats are really the ones who must have the expertise, the politician is simply the face of the government. So maybe that's it for Mr. Padilla as well, right? Who knows. You're correct though, people often want someone who can do the impossible.

Yeah well.. I think most people are sick and tired of these intelligent, so to speak, politicians not being able to deliver on their promises after getting elected. So that's why people opt to vote for these movie stars coz of their political will and their desire to help the less fortunate.

When people get the same promise over and over again and those promise are not realized this is what you get. People making fun of the elections.😁
