This Is How I Write

What Topic To Write On

This is probably the most challenging part for me when I write. Picking a topic to write on. There's just so many topics to choose from and you don't know which one to pick.

You have to consider which ones will catch the interest of readers. Is it relevant? Is it timely? A lot of questions need to be answered before finally deciding on a topic to write about.

I don't know if any of you experience the same thing as I do but I go through the whole process before I start writing. And that's after I decided if I'm gonna write or not.

Back when I was writing for schoolpapers, choosing a topic was not an issue as the editor-in-chief would just assign a topic to me. But now, I have the freedom to choose whatever topic I wanna write about. Maybe too much freedom 'coz now I don't know which one to write on first.

I guess it's easier if you're handed a topic rather than picking a topic for yourself. At least for me.

Pre-writing routine

Before I start writing I listen to some music first while smoking. And this is when I have chosen a topic to write on. I think of how the article should start and I think and think.

And the words would just come out of my head like the floodgates of heaven have been opened. Words become sentence and sentences become paragraphs. But I don't write it down right away though. I wait for it to reach like 2 or 3 paragraphs in my head before I start jotting it down. And I don't write the full sentences I just write keywords like a stenographer and just comeback to it when I feel like it's long enough.

The reason why I do this is I don't wanna stop the flow of words that's coming out of my head. When you're thinking of how to start your article and everytime you come up with something you write it down right away you get stuck after writing it.

I know this for a fact 'coz I used to write this way. And it takes me longer to finish my write-up 'coz I always keep getting stuck. And when you're only given an hour to write an article you wise up. You think of how you can be more efficient with your time. Experience have taught me this. And that's why my pre-writing routine is like this.

Where the words come from

I write base on personal experiences. It is easier for me to write this way as I'm only sharing my thoughts on a certain topic. This style of writing doesn't require me to do a lot of research like other writing styles do.

You can write faster this way and your train of thought will be much longer as you are only going back to your memory bank which stores a lot of stories just waiting to be utilized.

It is also a fun way for me to go down memory lane and revisit my past and share my story to the world. I don't mind telling other people my personal experiences and worry about them not liking it. Coz the ones who will like it becomes my audience and that's how I grow my following. You will never know which people you have something in common with unless you share your story to them.

When you're writing from experience you don't need to put a lot of effort in knowing about the topic you're writing on 'coz you know the topic first-hand. You're just simply sharing your take on that certain topic. If they don't agree with what you're writing then that's their choice. There's always someone who will not agree with you and that's Okay. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

Keep in mind who's reading

It is important to know who you are writing for. You may have a lot of followers and they may not all come from the same community but they all have one thing in common; they like your writing.

So try to remember that.

I have written in a lot of communities and I was able to obtain some followers along the way. And they became my followers 'coz my write-ups are fun to read. And I think that's the main reason why you've reached this far 'coz you're waiting for that witty remark.

Well, I got nothing.

If you want something to laugh on go read this post right here .

I guess what I'm trying to say is be consistent. It's easy to make someone follow you, you come up with 2 or 3 really good posts and engage with them and eventually they'll hit that follow button. But to keep them on reading your future post is the hard part. It isn't easy to come up with the same very good quality post everytime but if you're consistent, not only will you keep your followers but make a good reputation for yourself and grow your following even more.

So the word is, CONSISTENCY.

In Conclusion

So I wrote this post with the goal of sharing my writing process and maybe impart some writing tips that might be useful for you. This is how I normally write and it works for me but I'm not saying that you should write in the same way too. But there maybe something there that you might find valuable. I think.

But at the end of the day, we all have different writing styles and we all write in a way that's convenient for us.

And that's the end of the post.

Thank you for making it to the end I hope you enjoyed reading it.
