Pond Fishing Expedition

Hello everyone

The weather was scorching hot, and the big pond was drying up fast. My sister and her husband could see the problem coming, so they asked my mom and me to help out. They also got some workers who usually took care of the pomelo trees to join in. We all knew we had to act fast before the pond dried up completely and all the fish in it were either eaten by birds or snakes. So one afternoon, we geared up for fishing and headed straight to the pond.

The pond nestled within my sister and brother-in-law's expansive pomelo grove served a crucial role in their agricultural enterprise. Dug initially stored water during the rainy season, it was the lifeline for their sprawling plantation. As the rains waned, workers diligently pumped water from this reservoir to irrigate the countless pomelo trees that blanketed the farm.

Last year, they had labored tirelessly, harvesting pomelos and ferrying them to the market. Now, with the season in transition, a few grapefruits still clung to the branches, a reminder of the fruitful bounty the grove had yielded.

To reach the pond, we embarked on a journey through the labyrinthine paths of the pomelo grove. Each step brought us deeper into the heart of the orchard, surrounded by the verdant foliage and the faint scent of citrus that hung in the air. The rustling leaves whispered tales of seasons past, of bountiful harvests and tireless labor.

Approaching the well, we were disheartened to find it nearly dry, with just a small puddle at the bottom. The path down to the pond was steep and slippery, making our descent slow and cautious. Clinging to branches for support, we carefully made our way down. As we reached the edge of the pond, we were met with thick, muddy ground that threatened to swallow us whole with every step. Each footfall sank deep into the muck, making progress difficult and exhausting.

With the water in the pond dried up, catching fish became surprisingly easy. My brother-in-law had dedicated months to raising these fish, and now, many of them had matured into adults, ready to be sold or cooked. Alongside the various species of fish, the pond was also teeming with small shrimps, periwinkles, and countless crabs.

The sight of the exposed pond bed revealed a bustling ecosystem that had thrived beneath the surface. As we waded through the shallow remnants of water, we marveled at the abundance of marine life that had congregated in the now-confined space.

With makeshift nets and buckets in hand, we set about capturing the fish that had once swum freely in the depths of the pond. Each catch was a testament to my brother-in-law's diligent efforts in nurturing these creatures to maturity.

But it wasn't just the fish that captured our attention. Amongst the debris-strewn landscape, small shrimps darted about, while periwinkles clung to timber and submerged vegetation. Meanwhile, crabs scuttled across the exposed mud, their sharp claws raised in defiance.

We had a blast catching fish with nothing but our bare hands, even though those slippery critters made it quite the challenge. But after about three hours of determined effort, we had quite the haul – buckets brimming with shrimp, clams, crabs, and fish.

With our prize secured, we loaded up the car and headed home, excited to share our bounty. Some of the fish would be sold, providing a little extra income for the family. Another portion would be set aside to cook up and enjoy with everyone who had pitched in to help.

Next trip in about two weeks, when the water levels dropped even further, we planned to return for another round of fishing. After all, there were still plenty of fish left in the pond that had eluded us today.
