Sun, Sand, and Seafood A Day Out in Rawai

Hello everyone

Today, at noon, my family and I met up with my husband's brother-in-law, for lunch. We hadn't seen him in months because he'd just come back from France. Tomorrow morning, we're heading off to Tak Province, so it might be a while before we see him again. We decided to grab a bite at a restaurant near Rawai Beach, a spot we always hit up when he returns from France.

Phuket province tends to get pretty crowded this time of year. Normally, it's a quick 25-minute drive from our place to Rawai, but today it took us nearly an hour to get there.

Rawai Beach may not boast the same picturesque scenery as some of Phuket's more renowned shorelines, but it holds its own charm. The area is bustling with fishing boats and tour vessels, giving it a unique atmosphere. In fact, Rawai Beach is the primary departure point for boat tours to the various small and large islands surrounding Phuket. It's a hub of maritime activity, drawing adventurers and explorers eager to set sail.

One of the distinctive features of Rawai Beach is its sea gypsy community. This community brings life to the local fish market, ensuring a steady supply of fresh seafood for both Thai locals and foreign visitors. Every day, an array of catches is on display, offering a diverse selection for discerning palates.

After making your choice, it's customary to take your seafood to one of the nearby restaurants. Here, the skilled chefs work their culinary magic, turning your selection into a delectable feast. Keep in mind, there's a nominal cooking fee of 100 baht per dish.

In the past, we used to relish the experience of buying seafood here and then bringing it to a nearby restaurant for them to prepare it to our liking. Unfortunately, today's schedule didn't allow for a visit to the fish market. After a satisfying meal, our next order of business was to return and retrieve our luggage, preparing for our journey to Tak Province. The day may not have included a trip to the fish market, but the memories of Rawai Beach's lively atmosphere and delectable seafood will stay with us.

As we pulled into Rawai Beach, my husband expertly navigated through a narrow alley that led to the bustling beach road. Along this strip, a multitude of restaurants were lined up, each one offering a tantalizing array of dining options with a view of the beach.

After finding a spot to park, we strolled towards a restaurant that felt like an old friend. It was a place we knew well, having savored many meals there on previous visits. The familiarity of the place was a comforting embrace, and we were eager to once again indulge in its culinary delights.

Despite the scorching midday heat, we decided to brave it and settled ourselves near the beach. Colorful umbrellas provided a welcome shield from the relentless sun, offering a patch of shade to escape the heat. Fortunately, the beach area enjoyed a steady supply of cool breezes coming in from the sea, providing some much-needed relief.

Before long, a member of the staff arrived with menus in hand, ready for us to peruse and make our selections. The combination of the sea's refreshing breeze and the anticipation of a delicious meal ahead created a perfect setting for our beachside lunch.

Our orders were promptly placed, and it wasn't long before the first dish arrived at our table. It was the "Roasted Duck Red Curry" accompanied by a generous portion of hot steamed rice. As the fragrant aroma wafted up, I eagerly took my first bite.

However, today was different. The flavors didn't quite live up to the memory of our previous visits. It seemed that the dish, which had once been a culinary highlight, fell a bit short this time around. It was a bit of a disappointment, leaving me yearning for the exceptional taste I remembered from before.

A pleasant surprise awaited us, though, in the form of the fried chicken that my son had ordered. It turned out to be a hidden gem on the menu. My son couldn't quite finish it, so I decided to give it a try. The first bite was a revelation; it was absolutely delicious.

With satisfied appetites, we bid farewell to my brother-in-law and made our way back home. Despite the initial letdown with the curry, the unexpected delight of the fried chicken more than made up for it. As we headed back, a sense of contentment settled in, knowing there were still tasks awaiting our attention back at home.
