Frog mating calls everywhere

For the past few days, we have been having heavy rains in Chennai. When there are rains, all we hear are Frog mating calls everywhere. It usually happens for a day or two but this time this is going on and on for more than a week. My mother used to say that if there are continuous Frog calls, that means that the rain is not over yet. Frogs usually make their mating calls only if they are confident that the next few days will be wet and enough water bodies available for them to bring the next generation.

I did not think that I would be writing an exclusive article on Frog mating calls but it is very interesting to write on that as this is what I keep hearing in the last few days. From my childhood I have heard this a lot and only after I grew up and saw some BBC documentaries I came to know about what happens during these calls. Kids are usually new to this and are usually afraid when this happens. My sister's daughter keeps asking about why frogs are making noise and if they get tired because of this or not. Giving them an explanation on this is not easy as they keep asking further questions again. Another interesting thing about Frog mating calls is that they dig their own grave with these calls. Sometimes the mating calls are powerful during the night and sleeping in the middle of this sound is very difficult.

Some people say that mating calls done by frogs during the rainy season show how happy they are and how much fun they are having with rain. But some people say that it is not fun for the frogs but fun for the snakes because they would have a very nice meal during this time. The entire food chain becomes happy with this because one species is dependent on another for food and this keeps the cycle intact. My mother is usually afraid thinking we would start seeing a lot of snakes if there were more frog calls but these days snakes have reduced a lot as people either kill them or move them to forest areas. We don't get to see frogs on a normal day too. Nobody knows where the frogs would go and hide during the other time of the year but they all gather up during the rainy season to have fun.

Let's talk about the rain too

Usually, during this time of the month, we have heavy rains in Chennai. A few years back we also had severe floods changing the lives of many people and many people also lost their lives. Many precautions were taken by the government to make sure we don't get into such a situation again. We cannot predict nature but can only try to be safe. It is either a flood or cyclone. We have had both in Chennai and due to urbanization many people are affected. People build their houses inside lakes and rivers and when this natural thing happens and the water level increases, their houses are fully flooded and they end up in huge loss.

We are all hoping the rains should slowly settle down with no big damage to anyone. It has been raining continuously for the last few days and my backyard is filled with water and only from there the Frog calls are coming. If it continues to rain for one more day, then we will start having water logging issues in our house. They say there is a cyclone tomorrow. Hopefully, it should not enter Chennai and go away in the coastal area doing no damage to anyone. Fingers crossed.

This is an interesting post. I never knew that frog mating calls could indicate the duration of the rain. I remember hearing similar calls during the monsoons in my hometown. It's fascinating how nature works. Thanks for sharing this informative piece

Urbanization is taking away all these natural wonders. Hopefully we get to hear these calls every season. 🙏

I hear similar frog chanting in the ponds nearby. It can be a massive chorus sometimes.

Similarly, when the rainy season comes, such things are washed out of the water, and even here, when it rains, we can see them on the roads, so we should drive carefully so that they do not disappear. May I be safe in life.

Yeah quite true. After the rain stops, we can see many frogs getting hit by cars and other vehicles in road. We have to be a little careful.

The frogs species as an animal is really unique and that's great though. Do they give birth during dry season

Yes I think they give birth around this time.

@bala41288, Brother, You have written a very good article; you have written in great depth about the sound of frogs, which no one thinks of writing. There is definitely some reason behind the guesses our ancestors used to make. Some such things are also being scientifically proven now. You have given very good information in this article. Thank you.
