A journey to the heart of the Sierras Cordobesas in Argentina: Vaquerías Natural Reserve / Un viaje al corazón de las Sierras Cordobesas en Argentina: Reserva Natural Vaquerías

Yesterday, together with some friends we decided to go in search of another adventure to the Sierras of Córdoba, this time we went to the heart of the Punilla Valley, specifically to the Vaquerías nature reserve located in the town of Valle Hermoso. You may wonder why we chose this place, to be honest, when we left our homes in the morning, we had not yet decided our destination (we took the adventure seriously haha). It was when we arrived at the bus terminal where we decided to go to the town of Valle Hermoso, because from that point of the Sierras we could venture to several nearby places. Then we realized, in that quick search we were doing on travel destinations, that once in Valle Hermoso, we could make a tour of the nature reserve Vaquerías, a place with a privileged beauty and in the middle of nature, which is located 3 km east of this town.

Ayer, junto a unos amigos decidimos ir en busca de una nueva aventura a las Sierras de Córdoba, esta vez nos adentramos al corazón del Valle de Punilla, específicamente a la reserva natural Vaquerías que se encuentra en la localidad de Valle Hermoso. Quizás se pregunten porque escogimos este lugar, siendo sincero, cuando salimos a la mañana de nuestros hogares, todavía no habíamos decidido nuestro destino (Nos tomamos en serio la aventura jaja). Fue cuando llegamos a la terminal de ómnibus donde decidimos ir a la localidad de Valle Hermoso, porque desde ese punto de las Sierras podíamos aventurarnos a varios lugares cercanos. Luego nos dimos cuenta, en esa búsqueda rápida que estábamos haciendo sobre destinos de viaje, que una vez estando en Valle Hermoso, podíamos hacer un recorrido por la reserva natural Vaquerías. Un lugar con una belleza privilegiada y en plena naturaleza, que se encuentra a 3 km al este de esta localidad.

Vaquerías complex / Complejo Vaquerías

From Córdoba Capital it took us 2 hours to get to the town of Valle Hermoso, where we asked for information on how to get to Vaquerías, being consistent with the adventure we walked the 3 km that we were indicated to the entrance of our destination, during the walk we were talking, seeing the old houses that were seen on the road and hydrating (something that this week is very necessary in Argentina by the heat wave of up to 42 degrees Celsius), even so with the heat and the strong sun we were very lively. In our first stop, we found a hotel that belongs to the Vaquerias complex, which has the necessary amenities of the season, however our destination was not a hotel with a pool ... it was nature itself ... so after refresh myself (yes, again) and put on sunscreen, we continued our tour.

Desde Córdoba Capital tardamos en llegar 2 horas, hasta el pueblo de Valle Hermoso, donde pedimos información sobre cómo llegar a Vaquerías, siendo consecuentes con la aventura caminamos los 3 km que nos indicaron hasta la entrada de nuestro destino, durante la caminata estuvimos charlando, viendo las casas de época que se veían en el camino e hidratándonos (Algo que en esta semana es muy necesario en Argentina por la ola de calor de hasta 42 grados Celsius), aun así con el calor y el sol bien fuerte que hacía estábamos muy animados. En nuestra primera parada, nos encontramos un Hotel que pertenece al complejo vaquerías, el cual cuenta con las comodidades necesarias de la temporada, sin embargo nuestro destino no era un hotel con piscina… era la naturaleza misma… por lo que luego de refrescarnos ( si, otra vez) y colocarnos protector solar, continuamos nuestro recorrido.

Natural Reserve/ Reserva Natural

After an hour and a half walk from Valle Hermoso, we arrived at the entrance of the Natural Reserve (you can also get there by car), where we would receive instructions from the park rangers, we had a couple of things to do, trekking, trying to get streams and some place to submerge and refresh ourselves after so much walking.

Luego de hora y media de caminata desde Valle Hermoso, llegamos a la entrada de la Reserva Natural (También se puede llegar en auto hasta esta parte), donde recibiríamos las instrucciones de los guarda parques, teníamos un par de cosas por hacer, hacer trekking, intentar conseguir arroyos y algún lugar para sumergirnos y refrescarnos después de tanto caminar.

Inside the reserve we walked through the stream known as "Ampatu Mayu", skip stones and obstacles (nice place for trekking), until we reached a fork where we had the options of reaching the "Waterfall of the Helechos" or the "Waterfall of the Angel". We visited both waterfalls, one was more to refresh your face with its cold water (Waterfall of the Helechos) and the other, Waterfall of the Angel where we spent a good time, was deep so we got to bathe and take off the heat. Once in the water, the whole hike was worth it!

Dentro de la reserva caminamos a través del arroyo conocido como “Ampatu Mayu”, sorteando las piedras y obstáculos (lindo lugar para hacer trekking), hasta llegar a una bifurcación donde teníamos las opciones de llegar a la “Cascada de los Helechos” o a la “Cascada el Ángel”. Visitamos ambas cascadas, una era más para refrescarse la cara con su agua fría (Cascada de los Helechos) y la otra, la Cascada el Ángel donde pasamos un buen rato, era profunda por lo que conseguimos bañarnos y sacarnos el calor. Una vez en el agua, toda la caminata había valido la pena!

When we finished bathing, we started our return, but not before taking a couple of pictures from the mountains, where the full nature and the immensity make you want to stay there. Once outside the natural reserve, we would be very lucky, one of the park rangers was going to Valle Hermoso in his truck, so we asked him if he could bring us closer and very kindly took us down to the town, so we could save a little time (1 hour) to continue visiting Valle Hermoso.

Cuando terminamos de bañarnos, emprendimos nuestro regreso, no sin antes tomar un par de fotos desde las sierras, donde la naturaleza plena y la inmensidad te hacen querer quedarte ahí. Una vez ya afuera de la reserva natural, tendríamos mucha suerte, uno de los guardaparques iba hacia Valle Hermoso en su camioneta, por lo que le preguntamos si nos podía acercar y muy amablemente nos bajo a la localidad, por lo que pudimos ahorrar un poco de tiempo (1 hora) para seguir conociendo Valle Hermoso.

Back / De regreso

We had read before about a place called Nono Chin Chin where they make the best artisan "Chacinados" in Valle Hermoso, so once in the town we headed there to rest a little and end the day in the best way with some of meat and cheese plate, some bread and olive oil, in the Sierras of Córdoba.

Habíamos leído antes de un lugar llamado Nono Chin Chin donde hacen los mejores chacinados artesanales de Valle Hermoso, por lo que una vez estando en la localidad nos dirigimos ahí para descansar un poco y finalizar el día de la mejor manera con una picadita, un poco de pan y aceite de oliva, en las Sierras de Córdoba.

At the beginning of this journey we did not have a destination, nor a programmed course, we knew that there is currently a drought in the Sierras and at times we were uncertain, but in the end, the day was great, full of nature (this time we only saw goats and not snakes), adventure, and gastronomy. It was an incredible trip among friends, which we hope to repeat soon. Maybe that's why people say that sometimes, doing things without planning them so much ends up being unique and memorable. We said goodbye to Valle Hermoso yesterday in the sunset, sure that there will be a new visit. I hope you liked it, see you next time.

Al principio de este viaje no teníamos un destino, ni rumbo programado, sabíamos que actualmente hay una sequía en las Sierras y por momentos tuvimos incertidumbre, pero al final, el día fue genial, lleno de naturaleza (Esta vez solo vimos cabras y no serpientes), aventura, y gastronomía. Fue un viaje increíble entre amigos, que esperamos repetir pronto. Quizás sea por eso que dicen que a veces, hacer las cosas sin planearlas tanto terminan siendo únicas y memorables. Nos despedimos ayer de Valle Hermoso en el ocaso, seguros de que habrá una nueva visita. Espero les haya gustado, nos vemos en una próxima oportunidad.
