Again, I Struck A Deal ..

With a gentleman I’ve been doing some coin trading with recently. I guess I shouldn’t really say trading coins but rather me buying his coins from him. LOL. It started off as a single trade a while back but end up that he doesn’t really want any more coins and wanted to unload some of his collection. I get the funny feeling that he may need the funds for something else, but either way I am benefiting from him deciding to part with them at a somewhat hearty discount.

I took a look through the photos he sent me recently of some coins in his collection that he was willing to part with, and I found one that I really wanted. So… I made the offer, he accepted, I purchased it, and it has arrived!

This purchase, bought below book value, is a 1938D Walking Liberty silver coin. The mintage on these coins was awfully low and just 491,600 of this date were struck. Don’t quote me on this but I do believe 1921 and 1921D have lower mintages and they may be the only ones with lower mintage amounts for the coin series.

The Walking Liberty’s weight is 12.5 grams and contain 90% silver (11.25 g silver content) and 10% Copper. Along with the Silver Eagles and the Morgan silver dollars, the walking liberties are some of my favorite designs when it comes to silver US coinage.

Since the 1938D walking liberty half dollar it’s considered rare, the value is reflected in that fact. I don’t quite know exactly how much this particular coin is worth, because it has not been officially graded. I am thinking a good estimate would be just north of $80 USD, but I am really guessing at that. It may fetch more than $100 USD, but I will not know that until it is looked at and an estimate is given to me. I picked it up for quite the discount below this price, however, the actual silver bullion value in the coin is only about $8.55 USD (or .76 cents per gram).

The Obverse ..

On the obverse side of the coin stands the glorious Lady Liberty, as she is walking toward the sun. Even though this is a highly circulated coin, it still holds lots of those original details. Details like the ribbing in her dress, the items she carries, the stars in her cape, and the rays of sun shooting out from the bottom left. The date itself is quite legible as well as the word ‘LIBERTY’ written across the top of the coin. There are a few nicks, dents and scratches, along with a little bit of dirt, but nothing too crazy going on. She does show somewhere down the center, Which is typical for these types of high relief coins.

I’m very pleased with the quality of the obverse, from her fingers to the toes.

The Reverse ..

As for the reverse of the coin, the same holds true. There are several nicks, scrapes, and scratches that are indicative of a soft metal coin being circulated. These imperfections do not overpower the quality of the remaining design. The needles in the pine are quite impressive still. I can also see some nooks and crannies in the pinecones which is very cool to see in this coin. Some parts of the Eagles body and wings show signs of wear due to the high relief. Some of the feathering and details of the feet and head remain intact even though they sit quite high in the design. The wording at the top and bottom of the coin as well as the mint mark are fantastic.

Again, I am very happy with the reverse and it’s design details that are still intact. It also contains some spots of dirt but I’m not ready to quite clean those yet as I don’t want to diminish any of the value of the coin.

The Edge ..

The edge of the coin is in decent shape, with very few nicks and scrapes. The edges are slightly sharp and the reeding has a nice feel to it. I always like seeing the reeding type design, as I think it’s simple yet beautiful.

I hope you enjoyed seeing this example of a low mintage Walking Liberty coin. Obviously it’s not the highest quality of a low mintage coin, but I am grateful to have it in my collection nonetheless. One day it may even turn me a decent little profit.. We'll just have to wait and see.
