Yo me siento afortunada.

Life in a Suitcase
A little over a year ago, I made the decision to come to Spain to live with the person I love. I left behind my family, my sisters, my mother—who had just passed away—my friends, and my city. I dismantled my library, which I had started 40 years ago. I sold, gave away, and donated a good portion of my books. I took just a few that I could fit in my suitcase. I had only one suitcase to bring my life with me to my new home here in Andalusia: my computer and my cell phone. I’ve been a writer and a language and literature teacher since I was very young. In that suitcase, along with my clothes and those few books, came several profound losses and major challenges: adapting to life in a society and culture different from my own, and adjusting to living with another person.

In times of great change, the best thing to do is adapt and be resilient. I set aside the grief that was weighing on my soul. It’s perhaps easier to leave behind physical spaces—they’re just decorations we can become attached to, but in the end, that’s all they are: decorations. When you arrive at a new place, you feel that sense of estrangement—of being in a place that doesn’t belong to you, that you haven’t made your own. I’d already spent some time there as a visitor the previous year, so it wasn’t a completely new place for me.
It’s harder to come to terms with emotional grief—when you know you’ll never see the person who’s gone again, as was the case with my mother, or when you know your sisters and friends won’t be by your side anymore. I’d be alone in the face of danger, just like in the movie. I had decided to entrust the rest of my life to my partner, that calm man—always so quiet—who had opened his heart and his home to me. I chose to rely on trust and resilience. Starting from scratch when you’re almost 60 is no easy task. I accepted the challenge and focused on it. I began looking for ways to put down roots.
A Clear Goal and Determination
I put my grief aside, as I said, and focused on the challenge of building a home—in a house that wasn’t mine, that I hadn’t chosen or decorated, that didn’t feel welcoming to me; there were too many things that didn’t reflect who I was. The objects in your home are part of your story—things you buy, things you’re given as gifts. I had been a city woman—a big-city woman—with a schedule always packed with activities. My partner, who was a widower, had decided during the COVID pandemic to move here, to a small rural town near the beach, where his daughter—a scuba diving instructor—lives. It was a drastic change. More than once I asked myself: “What am I doing here? Did I make the right decision? What if I made a mistake?”

When you find yourself in a situation like this, at first you think of it as a summer vacation—the beach is so close, how nice. But as time goes by, you start to realize that no, it’s not a vacation; it’s just your partner, who’s a loner, and a few other people his age who, fortunately, enjoy reading. You join the book club; 99% of the members are over 65. You’re lucky that some of them take a liking to you. And in addition to reading, you start sharing a few beers with them when the club meets once a month.

With my friends from the La Herradura Book Club, where I live today
Once we had built up some trust, my partner gave me a great idea: to suggest to the president of the Book Club that she offer a creative writing workshop to club members who, in addition to reading, enjoyed writing. The proposal was a huge success—more than 10 people said they wanted to participate. And that’s how Ángeles, the director of the flamenco choir—who also enjoys writing—came into the picture. And since I love flamenco… I asked her if I could attend a choir rehearsal, and I joined. All these activities helped me meet people and put down roots in the town. A few months ago, I also became a volunteer with the Spanish Red Cross and help out with their activities.

When you focus in the right direction, you move toward your goal. My goal was to put down roots—to make the town where I live my home—and I achieved it. The hardest part has been building closeness; Spaniards aren’t like Venezuelans, who open the door to their homes as soon as they get to know you. I’ve been here for over a year, and I haven’t been to the home of any Spaniard or Latin American—though there are some in the Book Club and in my Creative Writing Workshop. But there are people who have shown me affection and care for me; they’ve given me their support and trust. I feel fortunate. I didn’t choose grief or victimhood; I chose to focus on the goal I had set for myself, and that helped me overcome the pain I was feeling.
Venezuela's Tragedy
You’ll always be from where you’re from. You carry that with you. Especially if you leave your country—in my case, Venezuela—when you’re already an adult and have a lifetime of habits and ways of being. And despite the profound political, social, economic, and cultural crisis my country has endured over the past 27 years, I will always be Venezuelan, and I will never renounce that identity.
I felt this more than ever on June 24, when a double earthquake shook my city, Caracas, and nearby cities, especially La Guaira, the coastal region very close to Caracas. Many buildings collapsed. At first, communications were cut off. Neither my partner nor I knew if our family members there were okay. That night, we didn’t sleep until we knew our loved ones were safe.
But beyond that initial anguish, in the days that have passed—now that we know our relatives in Venezuela are safe—every image we see fills us with a deep sadness, because our hearts go out to every person, Venezuelan or not, who could not be rescued alive; to every person who lost a loved one; to every person who lost their home; every person wandering among the ruins without water or food. Each of those people breaks our hearts. Even though we no longer live there, Venezuela breaks our hearts; their pain breaks our hearts. For now, I’ve done what I could: send words of encouragement and support to my family and friends. We will also overcome this tragedy, my Venezuela.
