Manifiesto
Señoras y señores
Esta es nuestra última palabra.
-Nuestra primera y última palabra-
Los poetas bajaron del Olimpo.
Para nuestros mayores
La poesía fue un objeto de lujo
Pero para nosotros
Es un artículo de primera necesidad:
No podemos vivir sin poesía.
A diferencia de nuestros mayores
-Y esto lo digo con todo respeto-
Nosotros sostenemos
Que el poeta no es un alquimista
El poeta es un hombre como todos
Un albañil que construye su muro:
Un constructor de puertas y ventanas.
Nosotros conversamos
En el lenguaje de todos los días
No creemos en signos cabalísticos.
Además una cosa:
El poeta está ahí
Para que el árbol no crezca torcido.
Este es nuestro lenguaje.
Nosotros denunciamos al poeta demiurgo
Al poeta Barata
Al poeta Ratón de Biblioteca.
Todo estos señores
-Y esto lo digo con mucho respeto-
Deben ser procesados y juzgados
Por construir castillos en el aire
Por malgastar el espacio y el tiempo
Redactando sonetos a la luna
Por agrupar palabras al azar
A la última moda de París.
Para nosotros no:
El pensamiento no nace en la boca
Nace en el corazón del corazón.
Nosotros repudiamos
La poesía de gafas obscuras
La poesía de capa y espada
La poesía de sombrero alón.
Propiciamos en cambio
La poesía a ojo desnudo
La poesía a pecho descubierto
La poesía a cabeza desnuda.
No creemos en ninfas ni tritones.
La poesía tiene que ser esto:
Una muchacha rodeada de espigas
O no ser absolutamente nada.
Ahora bien, en el plano político
Ellos, nuestros abuelos inmediatos,
¡Nuestros buenos abuelos inmediatos!
Se refractaron y dispersaron
Al pasar por el prisma de cristal.
Unos pocos se hicieron comunistas.
Yo no sé si lo fueron realmente.
Supongamos que fueron comunistas,
Lo que sé es una cosa:
Que no fueron poetas populares,
Fueron unos reverendos poetas burgueses.
Hay que decir las cosas como son:
Sólo uno que otro
Supo llegar al corazón del pueblo.
Cada vez que pudieron
Se declararon de palabra y de hecho
Contra la poesía dirigida
Contra la poesía del presente
Contra la poesía proletaria.
Aceptemos que fueron comunistas
Pero la poesía fue un desastre
Surrealismo de segunda mano
Decadentismo de tercera mano,
Tablas viejas devueltas por el mar.
Poesía adjetiva
Poesía nasal y gutural
Poesía arbitraria
Poesía copiada de los libros
Poesía basada
En la revolución de la palabra
En circunstancias de que debe fundarse
En la revolución de las ideas.
Poesía de círculo vicioso
Para media docena de elegidos:
"Libertad absoluta de expresión".
Hoy nos hacemos cruces preguntando
Para qué escribirían esas cosas
¿Para asustar al pequeño burgués?
¡Tiempo perdido miserablemente!
El pequeño burgués no reacciona
Sino cuando se trata del estómago.
¡Qué lo van a asustar con poesías!
La situación es ésta:
Mientras ellos estaban
Por una poesía del crepúsculo
Por una poesía de la noche
Nosotros propugnamos
La poesía del amanecer.
Este es nuestro mensaje,
Los resplandores de la poesía
Deben llegar a todos por igual
La poesía alcanza para todos.
Nada más, compañeros
Nosotros condenamos
-Y esto sí que lo digo con respeto-
La poesía de pequeño dios
La poesía de vaca sagrada
La poesía de toro furioso.
Contra la poesía de las nubes
Nosotros oponemos
La poesía de la tierra firme
-Cabeza fría, corazón caliente
Somos tierrafirmistas decididos-
Contra la poesía de café
La poesía de la naturaleza
Contra la poesía de salón
La poesía de la plaza pública
La poesía de protesta social.
Los poetas bajaron del Olimpo.
Defensa de Violeta Parra
Dulce vecina de la verde selva
Huésped eterno del abril florido
Grande enemiga de la zarzamora
Violeta Parra.
Jardinera
locera
costurera
Bailarina del agua transparente
Árbol lleno de pájaros cantores
Violeta Parra.
Has recorrido toda la comarca
Desenterrando cántaros de greda
Y liberando pájaros cautivos
Entre las ramas.
Preocupada siempre de los otros
Cuando no del sobrino
de la tía
Cuándo vas a acordarte de ti misma
Viola piadosa.
Tu dolor es un círculo infinito
Que no comienza ni termina nunca
Pero tú te sobrepones a todo
Viola admirable.
Cuando se trata de bailar la cueca
De tu guitarra no se libra nadie
Hasta los muertos salen a bailar
Cueca valseada.
Cueca de la Batalla de Maipú
Cueca del Hundimiento del Angamos
Cueca del Terremoto de Chillán
Todas las cosas.
Ni bandurria
ni tenca
ni zorzal
Ni codorniza libre ni cautiva
Tú
solamente tú
tres veces tú
Ave del paraíso terrenal.
Charagüilla gaviota de agua dulce
Todos los adjetivos se hacen pocos
Todos los sustantivos se hacen pocos
Para nombrarte.
Poesía
pintura
agricultura
Viola chilensis.
¡Porque tú los aclaras en el acto!
Cómo van a quererte
me pregunto
Cuando son unos tristes funcionarios
Grises como las piedras del desierto
¿No te parece?
En cambio tú
Violeta de los Andes
Flor de la cordillera de la costa
Eres un manantial inagotable
De vida humana.
Tu corazón se abre cuando quiere
Tu voluntad se cierra cuando quiere
Y tu salud navega cuando quiere
Aguas arriba!
Violeta Parra.
Se te acusa de esto y de lo otro
Yo te conozco y digo quién eres
¡Oh corderillo disfrazado de lobo!
Violeta Parra.
Yo te conozco bien
hermana vieja
Norte y sur del país atormentado
Valparaíso hundido para arriba
¡Isla de Pascua!
Sacristana cuyaca de Andacollo
Tejedora a palillo y a bolillo
Arregladora vieja de angelitos
Violeta Parra.
Los veteranos del Setenta y nueve
Lloran cuando te oyen sollozar
En el abismo de la noche oscura
¡Lámpara a sangre!
Cocinera
niñera
lavandera
Niña de mano
todos los oficios
Todos los arreboles del crepúsculo
Viola funebris.
Yo no sé qué decir en esta hora
La cabeza me da vueltas y vueltas
Como si hubiera bebido cicuta
Hermana mía.
Dónde voy a encontrar otra Violeta
Aunque recorra campos y ciudades
O me quede sentado en el jardín
Como un inválido.
Para verte mejor cierro los ojos
Y retrocedo a los días felices
¿Sabes lo que estoy viendo?
Tu delantal estampado de maqui.
Tu delantal estampado de maqui
¡Río Cautín!
¡Lautaro!
¡Villa Alegre!
¡Año mil novecientos veintisiete
Violeta Parra!
Pero yo no confío en las palabras
¿Por qué no te levantas de la tumba
A cantar
a bailar
a navegar
Violeta Parra
Esto es lo que quería decirte
Continúa tejiendo tus alambres
Tus ponchos araucanos
Tus cantaritos de Quinchamalí
Continúa puliendo noche y día
Tus toromiros de madera sagrada
Sin aflicción
sin lágrimas inútiles
O si quieres con lágrimas ardientes
Y recuerda que eres
Un corderillo disfrazado de lobo.
Epitafio
De estatura mediana,
Con una voz ni delgada ni gruesa
Hijo mayor de un profesor primario
Y de una modista de trastienda;
Flaco de nacimiento
Aunque devoto de la buena mesa;
De mejillas escuálidas
Y de más bien abundantes orejas;
Con un rostro cuadrado
En que los ojos se abren apenas
Y una nariz de boxeador mulato
Baja a la boca del ídolo azteca
-Todo esto bañado
Por una luz entre irónica y pérfida-
Ni muy listo ni tonto de remate
Fui lo que fui: una mezcla
De vinagre y aceite de comer
¡Un embutido de ángel y bestia!

Poetic selection
Manifesto
Ladies and Gentlemen
This is our last word.
-Our first and last word-
The poets came down from Olympus.
For our elders
Poetry was an object of luxury
But for us
It is an article of prime necessity:
We cannot live without poetry.
Unlike our elders
-and I say this with all due respect-
We maintain
That the poet is not an alchemist
The poet is a man like everyone else
A bricklayer who builds his wall:
A builder of doors and windows.
We converse
In everyday language
We do not believe in cabalistic signs.
Also one thing:
The poet is there
So that the tree does not grow crooked.
This is our language.
We denounce the demiurge poet
The poet Barata
The bookworm poet.
All these gentlemen
-and I say this with great respect-
Should be prosecuted and tried
For building castles in the air
For wasting space and time
Writing sonnets to the moon
For grouping words at random
In the latest Paris fashion.
Not for us:
Thought is not born in the mouth
It is born in the heart of the heart.
We repudiate
The poetry of dark glasses
The poetry of cloak and sword
The poetry of the top hat.
We favor instead
Poetry with the naked eye
Bare-chested poetry
Bare-headed poetry.
We do not believe in nymphs or tritons.
Poetry has to be this:
A girl surrounded by ears of corn
Or to be absolutely nothing.
Now, on the political level
They, our immediate grandparents,
Our good immediate grandfathers!
Refracted and dispersed
As they passed through the glass prism.
A few became communists.
I don't know if they really were.
Suppose they were communists,
What I know is one thing:
That they were not popular poets,
They were reverend bourgeois poets.
You have to tell it like it is:
Only one or the other
Knew how to reach the heart of the people.
Whenever they could
They declared themselves in word and deed
Against the poetry of the present
Against the poetry of the present
Against proletarian poetry.
Let us accept that they were communists
But poetry was a disaster
Second-hand surrealism
Third-hand Decadentism,
Old boards returned by the sea.
Adjective poetry
Nasal and guttural poetry
Arbitrary poetry
Poetry copied from books
Poetry based
In the revolution of the word
In circumstances that must be founded
In the revolution of ideas.
Poetry of vicious circle
For half a dozen chosen ones:
"Absolute freedom of expression".
Today we cross ourselves asking
What would they write such things for
To scare the petty bourgeois?
Time miserably wasted!
The petty bourgeois does not react
But when it comes to his stomach.
What are they going to scare him with poetry!
The situation is this:
While they were
For a poetry of twilight
For a poetry of the night
We advocate
The poetry of dawn.
This is our message,
The radiance of poetry
Must reach everyone equally
Poetry is enough for all.
Nothing more, comrades
We condemn
-and this I say with respect-
The poetry of the little god
The poetry of the sacred cow
The poetry of the furious bull.
Against the poetry of the clouds
We oppose
The poetry of terra firma
-Cold head, warm heart
We are resolute earthfirmists-
Against the poetry of coffee
The poetry of nature
Against salon poetry
Poetry of the public square
Poetry of social protest.
Defense of Violeta Parra
Sweet neighbor of the green jungle
Eternal guest of the flowery April
Great enemy of the blackberry
Violeta Parra.
Gardener
Locera
seamstress
Dancer of transparent water
Tree full of singing birds
Violeta Parra.
You have traveled the whole region
Digging up clay pitchers
And freeing captive birds
Among the branches.
Always worried about others
When not of the nephew
Of the aunt
When will you remember yourself
Pious viola.
Your pain is an infinite circle
That never begins and never ends
But you overcome it all
Viola admirable.
When it comes to dancing the cueca
No one is spared from your guitar
Even the dead come out to dance
Cueca valseada.
Cueca of the Battle of Maipú
Cueca of the Sinking of the Angamos
Cueca of the Chillán Earthquake
All the things.
Neither bandurria
nor tench
nor thrush
Neither free nor captive quail
You
only you
thrice you
Bird of paradise on earth.
Charagüilla freshwater gull
All adjectives become few
All nouns become few
To name you.
Poetry
painting
agriculture
You do everything to the thousand wonders
Without the slightest effort
Like someone who drinks a glass of wine.
But the secretaries don't like you
And they close the door of your house
And declare war to the death on you
Viola, you suffering Viola.
Because you don't dress like a clown
Because you don't buy or sell yourself
Because you speak the language of the land
Viola chilensis.
Because you clear them up on the spot!
How can they love you
I wonder
When they are sad civil servants
Gray as the stones of the desert
Don't you think so?
On the other hand you
Violet of the Andes
Flower of the coastal mountain range
You are an inexhaustible spring
Of human life.
Your heart opens when it wants
Your will closes when it wills
And your health sails when it wills
Upstream!
It is enough that you call them by their names
So that the colors and shapes
Rise up and walk like Lazarus
In body and soul.
No one can complain when you
You sing at the top of your voice or when you scream
As if your throat were being slit
Volcanic Viola!
What the auditor has to do
Is to keep a religious silence
Because your singing knows where it's going
Perfectly.
Rays are those that come out of your voice
Towards the four cardinal points
Burning grape harvester with black eyes
Violeta Parra.
You are accused of this and of that
I know you and I say who you are
Oh lamb disguised as a wolf!
Violeta Parra.
I know you well
old sister
North and south of the tormented country
Valparaíso sunk upwards
Easter Island!
Sacristana cuyaca of Andacollo
Weaver with stick and bobbin
Old arranger of little angels
Violeta Parra.
The veterans of the Seventy-nine
They cry when they hear you sobbing
In the abyss of the dark night
Lamp of blood!
Cook
nanny
laundress
Hand girl
all the trades
All the raptures of twilight
Viola funebris.
I don't know what to say at this hour
My head is spinning round and round
As if I had drunk hemlock
My sister.
Where will I find another Violet
Even if I roam fields and cities
Or sit in the garden
Like an invalid.
To see you better I close my eyes
And go back to happy days
Do you know what I'm seeing?
Your apron printed with persimmon.
Your apron printed with maqui
Cautín River!
Lautaro!
Villa Alegre!
Year nineteen hundred and twenty-seven
Violeta Parra!
But I don't trust in words
Why don't you rise from the grave
To sing
To dance
To sail
On your guitar?
Sing me an unforgettable song
A song that never ends
One song no more
one song
That's what I ask.
What does it cost you woman flowery tree
Rise body and soul from the grave
And make the stones burst with your voice
Violeta Parra
This is what I wanted to tell you
Continue weaving your wires
Your Araucanian ponchos
Your cantaritos of Quinchamalí
Continue polishing night and day
Your toromiros of sacred wood
Without affliction
Without useless tears
Or if you want with burning tears
And remember that you are
A lamb disguised as a wolf.
Epitaph
Of medium height,
With a voice neither thin nor thick
Eldest son of an elementary school teacher
And of a backroom seamstress;
Skinny by birth
Though devoted to good food;
Of scrawny cheeks
And rather abundant ears;
With a square face
In which the eyes are barely open
And a mulatto boxer's nose
Lowers to the mouth of the Aztec idol
-All this bathed
By a light between ironic and perfidious-
Neither too smart nor too dumb
I was what I was: a mixture
Of vinegar and eating oil
A sausage of angel and beast!
