"Order creates, chaos gives life"Robert Bresson

You may think, chaos gives life? How so? Chaos is bad! Well, yes and no. Of course, it can be bad, if we let it consume us and dominate most aspects of our lives. But then, we would be creating from chaos, not from order. Now, if we in fact create a solid foundation from order, chaos can give life to the rest. Allow me to explain further.

Have you ever tried to establish or modify a certain habit in your life? Whether it is working out, eating healthier, quitting vices, or simply anything that enriches you as a person, I'm sure you can identify with the initial difficulty of doing so. Until not long ago, I struggled so hard to maintain a daily routine that fitted my life goals. Okay, maybe I still do, but I'm working on it, okay? No judgment in this space, not from me and I hope not from you either. The point is, I was crashing face-first against the variability of life every time I tried to set some kind of order in it.

I'm a very punctual person. I hate being late, it makes me sick. And I noticed that I was kind of applying that pattern to my daily schedules. For example, if I had said to myself I would meditate first thing in the morning, and then it turned out I was too hungry to do it without having breakfast first, and then something else happened and voilà it's almost noon already... Well, I'd feel like I was late to my appointment with myself. And I would feel completely discouraged to perform the task I initially had wanted so hard to become a habit.

I think it's only when we accept that chaos is useful to us that we can fully make the most out of our days, with clear goals in mind and the disposition to work towards them, one step at a time. Can't meditate every morning at the same hour? Find ten minutes during the day. Can't workout today because you're sick? Go out and take a little walk. I know, it's harder than it sounds, and that's why I insist on taking it a day at a time. What's essential is that you create your life from order, first.

I would like you to take a moment to write down a few of your core goals in life, whether you're already on the path to achieving them or haven't started yet. And no, this has nothing to do with NYE. Any day is good enough to assess, evaluate, and review who you are, who you want to become, and what you're doing about it. Literally, any day. Trust me. So... Have you written them down already? Okay, you can just hold them in your thoughts. I know, these days is way too much of an effort to pick up some pen and paper, for most people. No judgment. Just hold your intentions in your mind.

For the next step, please invest a few more minutes, if you're keen, in designing a couple of actions you could perform daily to bring you closer to the realization of your objectives. I could give you examples, but I think it's really up to you to come up with something. Grind those gears harder, c'mon! I believe in you. Giving you some more time to think... Okay, you must have something, I hope. Now, you have a spark of order from which you can create. How to give life to it?

Well, embrace chaos, but don't let it drown you. Accept the possibility that every single day is unique. Anything can happen, literally anything, at any moment, and we must adapt to that. It's that chaos that allows DNA to mutate, which in turn spins the wheel of evolution. We humans don't notice it, don't even give it a thought, but we are being naturally selected with each move we make. The evolutionary pressures are always there, coming from every side; diseases, natural disasters, society itself, and so forth. It's what you decide to do with your precious time on earth, and with the resources that you already have, that will define the course of your future. We must stop waiting for things to just happen to us. They won't unless we start moving.

I'll end this little reflection with another quote, which could mean the same but phrased differently. Backwards, even. Or is it forwards?

"Out of chaos comes order"Friedrich Nietzsche (attributed to)

Actually, the closest phrase that can be found in his work would be "One must have chaos within oneself to give birth to a dancing star", which is way more complex but far more beautiful. As are almost all things under the Sun.

I'd like to thank you for reading this. I hope my words resonated with you in some way. If they did, or even if they didn't, I'd like to further connect with you, so I invite you to drop a comment and I'll answer it as soon as I can.

One of my mentors early in my career told me "Within the storm of chaos is freedom of movement" he meant it in the fashion that when everyone is running around over-reacting to the uncertainty associated with chaos, there is an opportunity for those who keep a clear head to do what they want and move freely. Although I was fascinated by this premise, it took me many years to become accustomed to it and have it as part of my tool belt.

I think your point of having a firm foundation is key to surviving the ebbs and flows of a chaotic world. It is difficult for many to live within the duality of having an orderly foundation, yet being adaptive and flexible to the inevitable change that life throws at us.

Setting goals has been a large part of any success I've been able to accomplish and I've seen studies that suggest that you are anywhere from 60-80 percent more likely to accomplish your goals if they are written down and in a place that is visible.

If you are five minutes early, you are ten minutes late! - Vince Lombardi

Another one of my favorite quotes of all time. I build in 20 to 30 minutes in every situation to avoid being late. It might be overkill but it secures my sanity lolol Early is on time and on time is late!

I greatly enjoyed reading your post!

Welcome to my comment section! Your presence is very much appreciated.

The words of your mentor highly resonate with my own experience; everyone is so caught up in the ideal of having a nice future that they forget to actually work for it in the present. Quoting one of my favorite bands,

the longer you wait for the future, the shorter it will be

It seemed appropriate. I'm glad you added the premise you mention to your tool belt, kudos to you for that.

It is difficult for many to live within the duality of having an orderly foundation, yet being adaptive and flexible to the inevitable change that life throws at us

Something worth learning for sure, even if it is through trial and error.

more likely to accomplish your goals if they are written down and in a place that is visible.

Sounds about right. I've always been fond of writing down things. It helps, yes. Sometimes a little more is required, but having the words visible certainly can push us forward.

It might be overkill but it secures my sanity lolol Early is on time and on time is late!

Not overkill at all! Please, don't ever change hahaha We need more people like you in this world.

Thank you for such a great comment, see you around!

Okay, I’m all for chaos...and order, and reflection and dedication and IMPROVING MYSELF. LoL.
That’s brilliantly done.

Well, I'd feel like I was late to my appointment with myself

OMG, do I know exactly what you mean.

Hey! Thank you for stopping by and for your kind words.

In this world of madness, chaos and so little time to do anything, it's always very appreciated when people take a few minutes to read my content.

Thanks! See you around.

...embrace chaos, but don't let it drown you. Accept the possibility that every single day is unique. Anything can happen, literally anything, at any moment, and we must adapt to that.

I liked this a lot - All of it. Accepting that chaos happens (embracing it) but not allowing it to take hold, cause one to freeze (drown), the understanding that it can happen (momentarily) and that's it's an opportunity to show ownership, responsibility, to evaluate the act is exactly what so many need...And yet they let it take them; steal courage, perseverance, bravery and so on. This is a nicely put statement and one that, to me, is a very important thing to grasp.

Now...You mentioned goals and as a goal-focused man the word stuck out to me.

You said, think of a goal, think of some actions that will take you closer to it...

So, what I learned a long while back was a little trick to taking a goal (Specific/realistic/challenging/motivating, measurable, time-limited and adaptable) to realisation.

  • Select it and write it at the top of a page.
  • Get new page and start writing all the things that could prevent it or that may get in the way and list in priority order, the biggest roadblocks to the smallest.
  • Take each one of those individually to a new page and write out a list on how to overcome each then prioritise those from most important/effective/achievable in order.
  • Take all those pages and lay them out in order of priority, biggest thing to the smallest as far as issues to mitigate, then collate into a flow chart on the first page, the one where the initial goal was written.

That's called a plan.

Of course, I've completely cut this process down to its most basic form, however maybe you get the point. A plan is required to breathe life into a goal.

There's many other elements, such as the goal being measured which required other sub-elements, or the goal needing adapting due to something changing and that pivot has it's own sub-elements...But above is the basics. Well, the ones that work for me anyway.

The above refers to short, medium and long term goals also. I mean, if one's goal was, to be rich, for instance...Well, that's not really a very good definition of a goal...It has to be broken into short, medium and longer term goals or it's simply too larch to encompass. The ultimate goal of being rich (whatever that is) is simply the end result of many, many smaller goals.

And lastly...Chaos. It happens but as you say:

...embrace chaos, but don't let it drown you. Accept the possibility that every single day is unique. Anything can happen, literally anything, at any moment, and we must adapt to that.

Sorry, a long and probably boring comment.

Hi Galen!

I always appreciate very much your presence in my comment section. All humans have unique insights to provide, but yours I highly value.

From what I've read in your content, it seems to me that you're a man that has lived, truly lived, and learned from it. Good and bad. Order and chaos. And yet, you're still you. That's commendable.

Thank you for sharing a little about your process of taking a goal into realization! The steps you explain inspire me to perfect my system.

That's called a plan. Of course, I've completely cut this process down to its most basic form, however maybe you get the point. A plan is required to breathe life into a goal.

I can see you merely scratched the surface, and actually would love to read more about this. I believe I could learn plenty from you.

Now that I think about it, I might be pretty good at handling chaos to give life to my goals and dreams, but I could definitely use a bit more order from which to create.

Thank you for such a thoughtful and in-depth comment!

Sending a big hug your way.

I hope you liked Nietzsche's quote. The original one. Reminded me a bit of you and thought you might find it as beautiful as I did.

Thank you for saying so. My comment touched on only a small part of your post but the concepts around goals are often completely misconstrued; people forget to attach the plan and with no plan a goal is simply a dream that is unlikely to occur.

...it seems to me that you're a man that has lived, truly lived, and learned from it. Good and bad. Order and chaos. And yet, you're still you.

Yes, yes and I try to be me, true to me. I fail a lot though and that's ok.

  • Nietzsche quotes are often valuable and so yes, I liked it.

  • I rarely deny hugs. Just saying.
