The road less traveled

"Just living is not enough. One must have sunshine, freedom, and a little flower"Hans Christian Andersen

Today, as soon as I woke up, the shadows lurked around me, wontedly. Creeping and prowling around the mattress, the ghosts of the past awaited my next move. Ah, not today. I had enough of you already. I dismissed them with a twist of the wrist, somewhat annoyed. I allocated myself out of the bed, not without a bit of resistance, and I got primed to start the day.

With a flick of the switch, the light bursts in. I clear the desk, unclutter my mind. Brushes and tubes of paint are placed and ready. The noise of this world must be quietened, silenced, and so the headphones come on. The music resounds. Then, and only then, I open the door to my soul.

There's a piece of light cardboard in front of me. It's a residuum, the remainder of a cereal box; trash for some, but a potential artifact for others. The gray of the material says nothing to me, and so I choose to fill the space with light. Titanium white does the job, crafting a truly blank canvas for me to create on.

I paint, and as I do, I dream. In the whiteness, they appear; the images of the life yet to be lived, the pieces of the puzzle falling into place. I build it from the ground: first, the soil, with its earthy colors. Then, some leaves, or flowers, or both. They rest on the land, they are one with it. I could have stopped there, but the hand wished otherwise, and so the brush waltzed over the surface. Some tree trunks arise, filling the scape. Their foliage comes not far behind.

I notice the absence of a sky. Silly me, how can my dream not have some blue? Not all is lost, and a small-tipped brush comes to the rescue, dotting the empty areas with a lovely shade of good weather. It pleases me so.

A few chunks of dry gouache serve the purpose of adding texture. I sign the piece, but there's still something missing. Aha! I know what it is. Grabbing the cuts of unused cardboard, I draw two figures. I crop them out, and I give them light. Titanium white light, again. Now, onto the matter of placing them in my dream. I don't have an appropriate glue, yet I lose no courage. The paint will do. Wet white on the other side, and... There! It's complete.

Sunday morning. They make breakfast, together. Laughter and light fill the room. Every room they are in. Weekends are for tending to the matters of the house, but not without a well-deserved encounter with nature first. They leave the house, no phones needed, only the required gear attached to their bodies and a simple yet tasty collation. He knows how hungry she gets.

Taking the road less traveled, they begin the ascent. A comfortable silence sits between them. Those first minutes immersed in the forest are precious, and they both respect it. Nothing but the sound of two pairs of booted feet pressing on the mushy layers of leaves. The everythingness of nature welcomes them with the aroma of the morning dew. They hold hands and walk forward.

A rhythmic sound, their synchronized breathing, floods the atmosphere around them. His cardiovascular condition is better, and so she struggles a bit to keep up. She is starting to get tired, and it amuses her. It's playtime. Stopping all of a sudden, she crouches on herself as if regaining composure. He asks if she's okay, and she nods, giving him a sideways glance that goes unnoticed.

He walks around for a bit, giving her time to rest before approaching her again. He frowns, slightly worried, as she is still hunkered down. Just as his hand reaches for her shoulder, in a caring gesture, she bolts forward and makes a run for the top of the hill. Halfway there, she stumbles with a root and falls face-first, choking with laughter.

Grinning, he walks toward her, who continues to roll around on the floor, cracking up, gasping for air. He throws himself over her, keeping her still, and a blanket of sensual silence covers them as they stare into each other's eyes. His breathing touches her lips, and she inhales with eagerness. Simultaneously, their faces start showing those unique smiles of them, and they know it's indeed time for a stop.

A really cool entry: Creative painting and writing.

I liked the hiking story - You know me and hiking - love it. It was funny that she faked needing a break so she could beat him to the top, but fate played a hand, the tree roots entangled her foot and soon...Well, it seems she found herself rather entangled in a different manner with her fellow.

I'm glad you chose this topic as not many have. Thank you.

Hi there! Thank you for such a cool WE topic. The options were so wide that they left room for almost anything creative. I liked that.

The girl of my story is such a nutbag. She got exactly what she deserved, I'm sure of that.

Thank you for taking the time to read my post and to further connect! See you around.

The girl of my story is such a nutbag.

We all are. It's just that only the really cool ones admit to it knowing that it's a strength, not a weakness. 😊

I knew this week would challenge some who felt they were not creative. In truth we all are, we just need to know ourselves well enough to see it and bring it forth.

Thanks for being involved.

A nice story; you manage to transport the reader to the couple's hike of the mountain. I can imagine one of those less traveled trails of the Avila and the two of them. You have a gift for storytelling, and I enjoyed reading this one. Saludos!

Strong response to challenge through creating a wonderful story and painting. Love for nature and sheer enjoyment being in the company of one who is on the same mental vibe in life.

Well done being a weekend engagement winner @beautifulwreck

When out one really needs stealth mode and silence, you don't get that from everyone. Have a wonderful last week of 2021.

Creativity is best when there's emotion. And the article shows both thoughts and actions and shows the results of emotions. Congratulation

Her name is Eliza. I love your work and whwm I clicked on your profile to read your post for the #weekend-engagement I glanced upon your name. It does so well with your username. I love it. Had to share that bit.

I love your painting and story. When you said you were missing blue and then you could just paint in some good weather, that was my favorite line.

I want to know if you think the way you write with your words flowing like art in your head because that is how it comes out on paper. Do you speak like this also? I love writing like yours.

Next time @galenkp puts out a challenge, I think Iay have choose the option that makes nervous because I think we should challenge ourselves more. Well, I think I should do more r things that scare me a little. Looking at others examples is inspiring and you have inspired me. Thank you again!!!!

Hi Becca! Thank you for such a nice comment. I'm glad you like my pseudonym, I selected it very carefully. Also, if you're interested, allow me to mention that the last name Óreiðudóttir doesn't really exist but it's inspired by Icelandic name compositions. It means daughter of chaos. Thank you for noticing the username!

When you said you were missing blue and then you could just paint in some good weather, that was my favorite line.

I was hoping this line would catch a few eyes. I found it an interesting and funny word-play. Life is like that, you know? We can choose to paint our days with a nice, pleasant shade of good mood and good weather. It's all about perspective.

I want to know if you think the way you write with your words flowing like art in your head because that is how it comes out on paper. Do you speak like this also? I love writing like yours.

Well, yes, I do write as I think. I wouldn't know how to do otherwise. When I write or paint, it's like opening a faucet, and I just let everything flow on the paper/canvas. Then, I review it and sometimes I omit and conceal things, to adapt the product to the crowd. Only with very few people do I talk, write, feel, paint, and express with no boundaries needed.

Becca, thank you for your words of appreciation, they mean a lot. Your comments always make me smile. And yes, please do challenge yourself when you feel the desire to do so; more often than not, our inner voice knows we need that test, and it's up to us to accept it and learn from it.

See you soon!

Hi!! Thank you for visiting my post, it's really appreciated. I'm glad you enjoyed both the story and the illustration.

I tried to portray how I get ready to paint, a bit of the process, and the tales that my mind creates for each piece. It was very fun to do, to be so mindful of the moment.

As for the holidays, I had a nice dinner on Christmas Eve with my family, for the first time in several years. Also, I got to spend a lot of time with my youngest brother, who is pretty much my best friend. Overall, it was very good.

What about you? I hope you had an amazing time, all in all. Sending you a big hug!

Wow, your writing 😍 A true artist!! I love how the narration of the process turned into another work of art too. I also love the painting, the figures just made it look perfect!

Hi!!! Wow, you have no idea of what this comment means to me <3 Thank you! I'm very glad you liked it. The figures were an impromptu addition and I loved so much the end result. It's not very noticeable in the photo, but there are little chunks of dry paint on the soil, and IRL they look like rocks and such.

Thank you for taking the time to read my post and to comment, girl! I love that you liked it so much.

Wow, just wow... you are a true artist, Eliza. Such creativity both in your painting and in your writing. This is really awesome!

There are many things I love about your painting, the step-by-step, the fact that you changed it midway i.e. added the blue - LOL - it's a good thing we can do that when working with gouache or acrylics 😍.

And then you topped it off by freewriting a short story. I'm amazed.

Very well done!

Hi there! What a beautiful comment, thank you so much!

Your words of appreciation mean a lot to me. I'm humbled.

Thank you!

I love this creativity you put into this post. So overwhelming and I enjoyed reading this. While reading it and getting to the last image of two figures, it reminds me of the garden of Eden where God kept two creatures- Adam and Eve to enjoy the beautiful nature around. Creativity at its peak, I must say 😊

Hi! Thank you for your kind words. I'm glad you enjoyed the story as well as the painting. I'm not exactly religious, but the concept of Adam and Eve lost in nature, simply existing, it's quite beautiful. Thank you for stopping by!
