Little Autumn Walk and Chestnuts with Friends

avatar

( EN / DE ) Autumn has finally arrived here. Gray skies, cooler temperatures and more and more falling leaves. So I got out my warm shoes and warm jacket and headed out to visit friends who were roasting chestnuts today.

I always thought chestnuts are available everywhere in the world, but my previous postings on similar occasions have shown me that this is not so and many do not even know how chestnuts taste.

First of all. even though they are called "chest nuts" in English, they have nothing at all in common with what we know as nuts. The inside is soft, how can I describe it? Harder than a boiled potato. But just softer than nuts, well chestnuts ;-) hard to describe!

For consumption are only edible chestnuts, there are also other varieties such as horse chestnuts, which are good for crafts, or even to make soap from it. But you can eat only the real chestnuts and these only in boiled or roasted state, whereby the shell must be scratched before frying, so that it splits open nicely and the chestnut can be easily removed afterwards, which then looks like this:

So I have spent a nice but also culinary interesting afternoon and I hope this small report about has pleased you :-) Yours, B.

I might have heard the name chestnut before but I'm getting to see it for the first time from your post.

It looks great and I wouldn't mind having a taste of it.

I love chestnuts, they are one of those little pleasures that brighten up autumn. I've tried them roasted like the ones you show us, but I prefer them raw. 🌰 🤗
