I was in class when I heard about your death. It was a cold morning during my high school days. My cousin came to my class, at first I was surprised to see her cause we only see ourselves during lunch hours since we attend the same school. She said she wanted to see me and the teacher permitted me.

I got outside and asked her what was wrong, she didn’t say anything then I saw tears in her eyes. I said to her “You can’t do that here, tell me what’s wrong” Then she said she heard her mom talking on the phone this morning and she was able to hear her say grandma is dead.

I was shocked for some minutes but I was able to believe that she wasn’t lying as my mom wasn’t home when we woke up and my dad helped us prepare for school, which is unusual as my mom always does that. well, he said: “She had something serious to do”.
When I got back myself, I hugged my cousin and we stood there crying like babies.

Losing you was never part of the plan. You were the only grandparent I met, as others died way before I was born.
Grandma I know you are in heaven I would love to tell you this;
I miss you so much Grandma Naomi, well we do not go on holidays anymore as it was just your place we celebrated the holidays. It feels so lonely as most Christmas holiday people travel home to see their grandparents and we just spend the whole holiday alone.

Grandma, it’s been a long time since I spent time with all my cousins at once as the only time we got to stay together was when you were alive. I still hear you call me “Ibifubara” as you were the only one who said “Ib isn’t your name but Ibifubara, then you go ahead to ask me what is Ib”, I still remember telling you it means “international bank” which was funny and we got to laugh about it.

You know what Grandma, Mom gave me a new sibling after you left, it is so sad that he doesn’t know anything about you and didn’t get to spend time with you. Well, I am not so little anymore as I am done with high school and even my university.
I still remember how you taught us about the importance of family and how you told us stories late at night.

Writing this to you right now, I have tears in my eyes, every memory with you comes flooding my head. It’s been years without you, we didn’t get anyone giving us Christmas gifts just like you did. You knew what every one of us loved.
There have been lots of new things happening in my life and that of my siblings. I know I miss you so much but I think my mom does the most as whenever it’s your birthday she makes a post about it.

I know you are doing so well wherever you are. In everything I still love you and I miss you. Every memory of you is still fresh in my head. Till we meet again.
