Time is not money in Nigeria
I just spent the last four hours under the scorching sun trying to buy fuel from my car. While I was sat under the sun, I thought about all the productive things I could be doing with my life and this doubled the frustration.
Here's the thing, in Nigeria we're not paid on an hourly basis and most time, people are paid peanuts for their input. So, what happens most times is that we'll see underappreciated staff dragging their feet.
Anyway, the story is that there's fuel scarcity in this part of the country which is mostly due to a flooding issue in certain parts. Fuel tankers can't move products around, so PMS is at a premium these days.
In recent times, it's been very difficult to even find where to buy fuel and when you eventually do, you can expect to see a huge crowd. So, yeah, this is what I found myself in this morning.
The plan was to pick up my friend's mum and take her to the hospital for a scan. We met up at a spot close to the fuel station and with only a handful of cars in front of me, I ended up waiting for hours due to the rowdiness.
Taking charge
My plan was to make my friend's mum's life easier by taking her to the hospital but instead, I added an extra layer of tediousness as we spent the entire period together in the car.
After a while of waiting, I had to get out of the car and coordinate activities at the fuel station. For the most part, I think I brought some order to things there but it was still quite chaotic in the general scheme of things.
My friend's mum that was supposed to just chill in the car actually took the steering while I was busy coordinating things at the station.
It turned out to be a very hectic period in my life because I hadn't eaten breakfast. I had no idea that there was fuel scarcity and that things had deteriorated to this state.
My plan was to get fuel and be out of there in 10 minutes maximum. Unfortunately, Nigeria happened and I ended up wasting a hefty chunk of my day that could have been spent doing something else.
Time is not money
In Nigeria, time could be money but for the most part, it isn't. This is why the system acts in a way that often shows this fact.
If time was money, you'll never put people in a situation where they'd spend hours performing a task that should take seconds.
While at the queue, I couldn't help but wonder what someone else in the UK would have earned in that same period. Someone that earns £10 per hour after tax would have earned £40 more than I earned while waiting in this pointless queue.
All I'm saying is that I really hate it here and every day we continue to descend further into ridiculousness. I just want to get the hell out of here.

I hear you. I cannot say I relate, but I understand that conversation about value coming up frequently.
If only more knew about the most positive-sum industry in the world, they could align incentives better for everyone.
Not saying everyone will, but the presence of alternatives gives one the option to participate.

You will get out of there in time. Unfortunately, the state that the world is in adds to your predicament, not solely the fault of Nigeria. I know you and your wife are working hard and saving to make your getaway....I truly hope that happens soon for you. Keep your chin up!

That sounds terrible but is still an upgrade for us. I'm not going to earn 10quid an hour forever because I'm definitely going to level up.
Speaking of which, can you suggest some certifications I could do to level up my copywriting. I'm trying to get employed real quick
