What do you think about soul bound monsters?

In Splinterlands, soul bound assets are generally assets that can't be traded in any exchange. Some commonly encountered soul bound assets in Splinterlands include Credits, Potions and Gladius monsters used for brawls.

In the recently concluded Townhall meeting, there were conversations about introducing soul bound assets into normal ranked play. Details about their abilities haven't been released to the public, but many speculate that they will probably be powerful monsters.

In recent conversations I've encountered, people haven't actually been bothered about the ability of the monsters but more about whether it is the right move. The jury still seems to be out on whether it is a good idea or not and if it does go down to community voting, we'll get a better idea.

My opinion

A lot of the details about these potentially incoming assets are still foggy, so take my opinion with a little bit more than a pinch of salt. However, I feel like it is a tad bit unnecessary.

My suspicion is that the soul bound monsters will have something to do with DEC Batteries that are on the way. 2Billiion DEC-B tokens have already been approved for creation by the community, and these soul-bound assets coming will probably be affiliated to them.

It is, of course, still in the realm of speculation but I don't see how adding non-tradable assets into the game will directly add value to the game. I feel like making ranked play assets soul bound is a direct contradiction of one of Splinterlands' selling points as being a card trading game.

Gladius monsters, for example, are non tradable and despite being a collection with some impressive monsters, the monsters are still under the radar. There's very little interest in Gladius monsters but I reckon the community took it in their stride because it is for guild brawls and that makes them unique.

Soul bound assets in normal ranked play will be a completely different issue because, on the one hand, if these assets turn out to be very impressive, people would want them but can't have them since they'll also end up being very pricey in terms of DEC-B.

I'm not saying that the community will end up hating the idea of soul bound monsters in ranked battlles. I'm saying that the implementation of a concept that already exists in guild brawls will be key to its success and considering that Gladius monsters aren't exactly the rave, I'm not so confident about soul bound monsters in Ranked battles.

This is just my opinion about soul bound monsters in ranked play with the limited information I have about the assets. As more details are made public, my opinion will also be refined and I could have a change of heart.

I'm not sure that the DEC-B and the soulbound cards will be directly linked. Since the amount of DEC-B is limited in quantity and won't be tradable, I don't think this will be the case. In general however I don't think it's a good idea to have these soulbound reward cards. As you say, it goes against the concept of the game. Great post!

I have picked this post on behalf of the @OurPick project and it will be highlighted in the next post! Comment Footer.jpg

I am also wondering how soulbound assets in ranked play will work. Why buy and upgrade the non-soulbound if this route is taken!?

The soulbound cards are not related to Dec-b. Dec-b is for buying specific things that currently burn Dec, like upgrading guild buildings.

The soulbound rewards cards are not soulbound forever, but rather die the Oreos that they are still being printed. As soon as all of them are printed you will be able to trade them and a new set of soulbound cards will be introduced.

So, if you want these cards to play with, then you need to play and win battles. As long as they are being printed you cannot buy them on the market. So dedicated players will have an advantage over people that have a lot of money, but not much time to play.

This will introduce some luck as well as some people will get an awesome legendary, while others that would normally buy the same legendary will need to hope that they get it soon. Also everyone will start with a level one and will need to get multiple copies to be able to level up a card. Very much like the gladiators in brawls.

And finally, gladiators are coming to ranked. There will be a new rewards summoner soon that will allow you to play a gladiator in a ranked battle, or two gladiators in a brawl.

This will make gladiators a lot more valuable.

These changes should hurt the big bot farms as those rent cards for 2 days, drain the ecr completely and then switch to another account to repeat the process. While selling every single rewards card they get.

Now they will get rewards cards, but they will not be able to sell them until the soulbound period is over. And during this period they will also not be able to rent these soulbound cards with a high level. Meaning they will have to play with level 1 cards, which hurts the earnings, or combine the soulbound cards, but then they will not be able to sell them as 1 bcx cards on the market.

I think this will be good for the game and the moment that the first set of soulbound cards is fully printed and is released to the market will have a lot of hype around it.

Ah I didn't have extra details and overall, yeah, I think proper implementation will be good in the long run.

Tbf, I don't know a lot of the new info they've talked about because no one writes townhall recaps anymore, but my main concern is the drop rates for lower leagues. I'm hoping the soul bound aspect will allow them to increase them.

I play in Silver for Gold eos chests and the last legendary I pulled was back in May 2022. Since then, I've earned 2700+ reward chests so you'd think I would've pulled at least a few more legendary cards since then, but with all the nerfs, I've had to buy the majority of mine.

Taking away my ability to buy them while also still allowing people to smurf tournaments allows a massive card advantage to upper league players.
