Facing a New Society | Reflection [Eng-Esp]
Young Venezuelans have changed their lifestyles, society is heading down new paths and many of us are becoming obsolete with the arrival of new fashions, trends and customs.
On a weekend visit I made to Los Caobos Park in Caracas I saw a large number of young people sharing in different areas of the park. There was also a bazaar selling clothes and accessories, when I approached to look I noticed that the theme was #anime.
Although I enjoyed the atmosphere I must confess that I also felt strange, lost, confused, in front of a generation of young people who showed, in my opinion, personality and character.
Jóvenes venezolanos han cambiado su estilo de vida, la sociedad va por nuevos caminos y muchos de nosotros nos estamos quedando obsoletos con la llegada de nuevas modas, tendencias y costumbres.
En una visita de fin de semana que realicé al Parque Los Caobos en Caracas, vi una gran cantidad de jóvenes compartiendo en diferentes áreas. También había un bazar de venta de ropa y accesorios, me acerqué a mirar y noté que la temática era el #anime.
Aunque disfruté del ambiente debo confesar que también me sentí extraña, perdida, confundida, frente a una generación de jóvenes que mostraban, a mi parecer, personalidad y carácter.
Even so, there were parents accompanying young people who shared the same style, but they were less confident than their children. I was left with the image of a lady talking to a teenager about thirteen years old. The mother hesitated to leave her alone in the place with her friends.
She repeated over and over again that she should be careful and do things right. The teenager was somewhat shy but confident that she could be there without her company. Another girl was by her side reassuring the lady who finally left her in the park.
While young people demand freedom, parents, representatives and adults fear for their children and the new fashions, habits and ways of socializing. I placed myself among that group of fearful adults. I will explain why.
Aun así, habían padres que acompañaban a los jóvenes que compartían el mismo estilo, pero tenían menos confianza que sus hijos. Me quedé con la imagen de una señora hablando con una adolescente de unos trece años. La madre dudaba en dejarla sola en el lugar con sus amigos.
Le repetía una y otra vez que tuviera cuidado e hiciera las cosas bien. La adolescente se mostraba algo tímida pero segura de poder estar allí sin su compañía. Otra chica estaba a su lado tranquilizando a la señora que finalmente la dejó en el parque.
Mientras los jóvenes exigen libertad, los padres, representantes o adultos temen por sus hijos, por las nuevas modas, hábitos y formas de socializar. Yo me situé en ese grupo de adultos temerosos. Les explicaré por qué.
While a group of young people were having fun dancing, dramatizing or doing photo shoots, others were simply talking and enjoying the show. On the other hand, towards less visible places, other boys and girls were eagerly feeding vices with cigarettes.
It seemed to me totally out of place to sell cigarettes in a space like this, even more inappropriate to sell cigarettes to minors. My criticism does not make me "old-fashioned". First of all, we were in a park enjoying the clean and pure air offered by nature. Second, there were children and third but not least, many of us are looking for less polluted environments for health reasons.
Mothers and fathers of teenagers are right in not wanting to leave their sons and daughters alone in places like these where not even the adults show caution because their objective is to sell, no matter to whom. I say this because of the sale of cigarettes.
Mientras un grupo de jóvenes se divertían bailando, dramatizando o haciendo sesiones de fotografías, otros simplemente hablaban y disfrutaban del espectáculo. Por otro lado, hacia lugares menos visibles, otros chicos y chicas alimentaban vicios con cigarrillos de manera ansiosa.
Me pareció totalmente fuera de lugar la venta de cigarrillos en un espacio como este, más inapropiado aún vender cigarros a menores de edad. Mi crítica no me hace ser "chapada a la antigua". Primeramente, estábamos en un parque disfrutando del aire limpio y puro ofrecido por la natutaleza. Segundo habían niños y tercero pero no menos importante, muchos buscamos ambientes menos contaminados por el tema salud.
Razón tienen madres y padres de adolescentes en no querer dejar solos a sus hijos e hijas en lugares como estos donde ni los adultos muestran prudencia. Lo digo por la venta de cigarros.
I continued to observe the clothing of the young people. I noticed that I was not in front of groups of only one fashion but several. Some with Retro" fashion, others Emo, Rockers or Cosplay, this last one completely new to me.
I learned about the term cosplay from a couple of young Emo fashion lovers, who gave me some information. According to them cospley fashion is linked to #anime. Incidentally, many of the guys were sporting hairstyles and haircuts from the cartoons.
I took the opportunity to ask about the music. My ears were listening to retro 80s music but my brain didn't link one thing to the other; cosplay fashion to the melody. I insisted again with my questions to the guys but they didn't know how to explain.
Continué observando la vestimenta de los jóvenes. Noté que no estaba frente a grupos de una sola moda sino de varias. Algunos con moda Retro", otros Emo, Rockeros o Cosplay, éste último completamente nuevo para mí.
Supe del término cosplay por un par de jovencitos amantes de la moda Emo, quienes me aportaron algo de información. Según ellos la moda cospley se vincula con los #anime. Por cierto, muchos de los chicos mostraban peinados y cortes de los dibujos animados.
Aproveché de preguntar por la música. Mis oídos escuchaban música retro de los ochenta pero mi cerebro no relacionaba una cosa con otra; la moda cosplay con la melodía. Volví a insistir con mis preguntas a los chicos pero no supieron darme explicación.
My eyes did not see a simple dance, they were choreographies very well rehearsed by the young people. Those who wanted to could join in, but obviously to join in they had to know the dance, that was my perception.
Male and female danced to the same rhythm. The young people were having fun, evaluating each other, congratulating each other or celebrating with emotion the result. The dancers managed to capture the attention of the public. There were many people taking pictures, commenting and applauding.
As I contemplated the atmosphere, thousands of questions went through my head: Am I in front of the relay generation? Without judging or criticizing, I asked myself: What will Venezuelan society be like ten years from now, taking into account the characteristics of these kids? What is cosplay fashion like?
Mis ojos no veían un simple baile eran coreografias muy bien ensayadas por los jóvenes. Quienes quisieran podían unirse, pero obviamente para unirse debían conocer el baile, esa fue mi percepción.
Hembra y Varones bailaban a un mismo ritmo. Los jóvenes se divertían, se evaluaban entre ellos, se felicitaban o celebraban con emoción el resultado. Los bailarines lograron captar la atención del público. Hubo muchas personas tomado fotografías, comentando y aplaudiendo.
Mientras contemplaba el ambiente, miles de preguntas pasaban por mi cabeza ¿Estoy frente a la generación de relevo? Sin ánimos de emitir juicios ni de criticar me decía a mi misma ¿Cómo será la sociedad venezolana dentro unos diez años tomando en cuenta las características de estos chamos? ¿Cómo es la moda cosplay?

Based on that brief definition of the term, I questioned the issue again. As for the emotional issue, what do these boys intend to convey when their lives are a "real representation of a character "? Will they take their roles seriously? Will they represent a danger to society?
Among the characters I saw were spiderman,
gorillas, anime, ninjas, vampires, representation of death, ghosts, among others. Each character according to the cartoons has its own personality, this does not only apply to comics, diversity in real life makes us different, but my question is: How does it manifest itself in each person if they assume a behavior that is not their own?
Con base a esa breve definición del término volví a cuestionar el asunto. En cuanto al tema emocional, ¿qué pretenden transmitir estos muchachos cuando sus vidas son una "representación real de un personaje"? ¿Se tomaran en serio sus roles? ¿Representarán un peligro para la sociedad?
Entre los personajes que ví estaba el hombre araña,
gorilas, ánime, ninjas, vampiros, representación de la muerte, fantasmas, entre otros. Cada personaje de acuerdo a las caricaturas posee su propia personalidad, esto no solo aplica a los cómics, la diversidad, en la vida real nos hace diferentes pero, mi inquetud está en ¿Cómo se manifiesta en cada persona si asume una conducta que no le es propia?
If I am honest, I saw groups of young people enjoying common interests on this stage. Hugs and kisses were shared among them. Some were in the face of obvious dangers, others simply isolated or in the midst of pleasant conversations.
If this is the generation of the future, uncertain, unknown, then we will have to start getting to know them and find out what their interests are.
Si soy sincera ví en este escenario a grupos de jóvenes disfrutando de intereses comunes. Abrazos y besos eran compartidos entre unos y otros. Algunos estaban ante peligros evidentes, otros simplemente aislados o entre conversaciones amenas.
Si esta es la generación del futuro, incierta, desconocida, pues tendremos que empezar a conocerla y descubrir cuáles son sus intereses.
I do not know if for better or for worse, but there is no doubt that we are facing a new society that we cannot ignore. Technological intervention and its influences mark paths, it is important to be attentive to them.
No sé si para bien o para mal pero sin duda alguna está frente a nosotros una nueva sociedad a la que no podemos hacer caso omiso. La intervención tecnológica y sus influencias marcan caminos, es importante estar atentos a ellos.
