Sometimes I think I have extensive knowledge about plants that exist in Venezuela but always a new one comes out and I give up my initial idea.

Today I met the icaco plant. When I approached the plant, the fruit seemed strange to me. Many times I plan1 them edible, the icaco looked like one of them.

I started taking some pictures, then I felt the texture of the leaves, I perceived its aroma, when suddenly a man asked me if I knew that plant, when I gave a negative answer he told me, it is icaco. He brought down a fruit and gave me a taste, he also invited me to break the seed to eat the seed.

Hoy conocí la planta del icaco. Cuando me acerqué a la planta, si fruto me pareció extraño. Muchas veces las plan1 comestible, la de icaco parecía una de ellas.

Comencé tomando unas fotografías, luego palpé la textura de las hojas, percibí su aroma, cuando de pronto apreció un señor preguntando si conocía aquella planta, al dar respuesta negativa me dijo, es icaco. Bajó un fruta y me dió a probar, también me invitó a partir la semilla para comer la semilla.

The fruit tastes good, it is sweet and soft, it melts in the mouth like cotton candy, the seed is soft, I could split it with a tap, what is inside the seed is white and bitter but can be eaten without problem, it is similar to the seed of the peach.

The icaco plant can be seen in the coastal areas of my country Venezuela, it is a friend of the humid and salty environment but enemy of the cold, according to what I read in Web, the plant in a cold climate can disappear. This fruit is not commercial at all. I have rarely seen them in the markets, perhaps because of its low production, however, it is said that it is used to make sweets.

La fruta tiene buen sabor, es dulce y suave, se derrite en la boca como un algodón de azúcar, la semilla es blanda, pude partirla de un golpecito, lo que está dentro de la semilla es blanca y amarga pero puede comerse sin problema, es similar a la semilla del durazno.

La planta del icaco puede verse en las zonas costeras de mi país Venezuela, es amiga del ambiente húmedo y salado pero enemiga del frío, según leí en Web, la planta en un clima frío puede desaparecer. Está fruta no es nada comercial. Rara vez las he visto en los mercados, quizá sea por su poca producción sin embargo, se dice que es utilizada para hacer dulces.

As for the care of the plant, I noticed that it is in perfect condition. The man who takes care of it says that there are few in the area and for that reason he preserves it even more. There are children who like the icaco, others prefer traditional fruits such as mango.

It is a fruit with a lot of flavor, I found it pleasant but nevertheless, to eat several times it can be disgusting.

En cuanto al cuidado de la planta noté que se encuentra en perfecto estado. El señor que la cuida dice que hay pocas en la zona y por esa razón la conserva aún más. Hay niños a quienes les gusta el icaco, otros prefieren frutas tradicionales como el mango.

Es una fruta con mucho sabor, me pareció agradable más sin embargo, para comer varias veces puede ser repugnante.

Another beautiful, well-preserved plant with bright red fruits is called pomarrosa, pomagas or pomalaca. The fruit of the pomarrosa is edible, has a sweet taste, is juicy and has a strong odor, perhaps the smell is what makes it repugnant.

It is not a commercial fruit either. It seems exotic to me because of how delicate it looks. The leaves of this plant are strong, they stay green, together with the color of the fruit they make a wonderful contrast. The plant is a small shrub, not very tall, the fruits are in clusters and are kept there until they are lowered for consumption.

Otra planta hermosa, bien conservada y con frutos de color rojo brillante es la llamada pomarrosa, pomagas o pomalaca. El fruto de la pomarrosa es comestible, posee un sabor dulce, es jugosa y con olor fuerte, quizá el olor es la que la hace repugnante.

Tampoco es una fruta comercial. Me parece exótica por lo delicada que se ve. Las hojas de esta planta son fuertes, se mantienen verdecitas, junto al color del fruto hacen un contraste maravilloso. La planta es un pequeño arbusto, no posee mucha altura, las frutas se dan en racimos y allí se mantienen hasta que son bajadas para su consumo.

The pomarrosa fruit is used for some health treatments, it acts as a diuretic, it is said to be useful for flu and even for diabetes.

La fruta pomarrosa es utilizada para algunos tratamientos de salud, actúa como diurético, se dice que sirve para la gripe e incluso para la diábetes.
