The Santa Maria de la Cabeza castle is located on Sucre street next to the Santa Ines church, according to the information provided by the guide of the castle San Antonio de la Eminencia this served as the residence of the governors and military, was the safest place for the rulers to not be exposed and visible in the highest part of the city, also had secret tunnels that communicated with the Castillo Antonio de la Eminencia located a few meters away on the hill of Eminence, the highest point of the city; the castle santa María de la cabeza has been repaired on several occasions since it has suffered the onslaught of several earthquakes that have hit the city, in its construction limestone rock and materials typical of the area and the time were used.

On one side of the facade were built several caves that are the largest in the country, the entrance door is blue with a semi-arch shape and external stone stairs, after passing the door, there are other stairs leading to the terrace, this has concrete floor and stone mosaics that adorn it, also small columns that protect and decorate the perimeter of the terrace, from this part you can see several residences of Sucre street, also an excellent view of the towers of the church santa Inés; An element that caught my attention was a tree trunk and several plants located at the top of the castle that remain green and survive on a cement floor.

In the center of the terrace there is a chapel with a colorful design, wooden doors and windows in vaulted form; a blue dome with a pointed finish and a cross that stands out, the walls have beautiful decorative lines on the outside and sharp ends (points) at the top; the interior of the chapel has an altar, a beautiful lamp and benches for the comfort of the parishioners. Visiting this castle was a dream come true, I was able to learn a little more about the interesting history of the city of Cumaná and although this fortress still has pending areas to rebuild it is a great place to contemplate the constructions of colonial origin.

I was so excited to enter the castle that I did not see the benches located on the right side and a beautiful garden that beautifies the entrance, my visit was at noon and the sun was intense, but we still enjoyed the tour, my little adventurer was delighted with the place and plans to return again, the caves were his favorite place and mine too.

Greetings @tomidiwirja, thanks for stopping by, it was a nice adventure to get to know this castle, the grottos are striking and according to the guide's information they are more than 150 years old and a beautiful garden very well kept by the way.

Happy new year!

The castle is an old but very well preserved building, so I can imagine how exciting the tour was: a journey into the past.

Hello @indipnash91, it is true, despite the years, much of its structure is preserved, definitely the chapel with its particular design and the grottoes add attractiveness and interest, most visitors stay a long time watching the grottoes, it is also cooler this space compared to the top of the castle which also has its benefits, as it allows you to see several areas of the city.

Happy New Year!

The castle is such a beautiful place and has extraordinary charm. The attractive design differentiates it from other castles. The building is very sturdy and very valuable time to time.

Hi @aswita, the design of the castle is unique, it does not have sentry boxes like those located on the coasts of the country, its attraction is undoubtedly the grottoes and the chapel, visiting it is a nice experience in addition to knowing its interesting history.

Greetings!
